ckcornflake Posted November 4, 2009 Report Posted November 4, 2009 (edited) Just wanted to post a video of a game I'm working on called Abaddon. I haven't played Subspace in a while, but SS and a game called Escape Velocity has definitely influenced me when I designed this game. I created it using a (almost) free development kit Microsoft provides for the XBox 360. Anyways, I would like to know what people who enjoy the top-down shooter genre think. rootbear75 Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Couple of things:1) Control Scheme: Is it Left Stick move, and Right Stick shoot? or left stick move, and something like RT to shoot?2) Armor/Energy/Shield bars: I dont like the way they deplete. The actual bars just move to the left, instead of the bars "disappearing" I'd like it more if it were like a "progress bar" type of animation. other than that, looks good. Quote
whalz Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 wow way to nit pick about the most MINUTE details , what really does it matter how the picture looks.. if your energy is 50% , its 50%............... lets face it tho, subspace ships look way cooler flying around than those... maybe if you added a jav into your game... not like i care tho , since i dont have xbox!!!!!!!!! »Purge Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Looks like a very enjoyable game. Too bad I also don't have a 360. <_< Quote
L.C. Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 That, but as Subspace using Subspace protocols to connect to existing Subspace zones, would be awesome. Nice job! Quote
ckcornflake Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 Thanks for the responses guys. The control scheme is like this: Left thumbstick controls movement. If you're ship has fixed guns then right trigger fires. If you're ship has turrets then the right thumb stick shoots in the direction you're pointing. Left and right bumpers control special abilities. If you hold the left trigger down you can rotate your ship without thrusting. If it gets popular enough on the 360 I'll try to make a PC release. It would take me some time to port the network code however. Quote
LiDDiS Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 Well you changed the text of the option I voted for to 'lame'. I thought it looks pretty decent though. Quote
ckcornflake Posted November 5, 2009 Author Report Posted November 5, 2009 Well you changed the text of the option I voted for to 'lame'. I thought it looks pretty decent though. Lol, my bad. I think the poll thing cuts off everything after single quotation marks. I originally meant to put "It's lame." Anyways, I'm glad you don't think the game is lame. That's cool that I can change the poll questions though. If everyone thought my game was lame I would change that option to be "The best game ever!" Quote
»jabjabjab Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 Add Diwa's warbird, and give it a "far back" classic fighter ship appeal. Quote
Gravitron Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Always some lamers who somehow land a VC manage to "steal" your gamedesign, make it utterly dumbed down for the retarded consoliers and thenscrew it up completely and release it with tenth of the scope you hadplanned and none of the skill. Not to mention that this is a derivative of Silent Death, SubSpace, Stellar Frontier and quite a few others I can think of. Too bad the indie SS-like projects I've seen come and go didn't do it first, because they would've probably been better than this mindless quick-cash-reaper clone. Quote

You have no idea what you are talking about. I never landed a "VC" or any thing like that. I am an Indie developer and will release this under Xbox live's Indie game section on the marketplace. This is definitely not a get-rich-quick scheme for me. These types of games usually sell very poorly on the console. I'm creating this game (along with others) to eventually break into the game industry, which is not an easy thing to do if you want to get in a big name studio. I spent over a thousand hours as the single programmer on this game. If I were doing this for the sole purpose of money, I'd be insane. Yeah this game has influence from SS and other games. I clearly stated this in my OP. However, it has some very unique aspects to it that no one has seen yet. You must have some powerful psychic abilities to be able to deduce if a game is just a clone from two minutes of video footage. Quote
Hakaku Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Don't worry about Grav, he's just generally bitter about everything. Personally, I think it's great that more games admit to being influenced by SubSpace, while providing different and new aspects to the gameplay that give them their unique flare. They'll never be SubSpace; that would just be lame. Anyhow, the game looks pretty interesting, but it would be nice to have some default background music to it of some sort, since the weapon sound effects alone get a little irritating after a while. Gravitron Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 (edited) Very bitter. Also, I'll throw in a quip from MineGoBoom: "WTF? PLAY ON THE PC, BITCH!" (Originally directed at the now-defunct Starcraft:Ghost.) Insane coder, don't waste time on XBLA junkyard, Moore no longer work for MS/Xbox. No one will discover you/give you big push/et cetera in there.Game industry isn't really all that hoot, and you'll just end up being an apprentice coder on some lame failed console quick cash milker car race game or something that you'd likely not get very enthusiastic about. If you really want to make your own games, then go at that, and don't try to get in the industry/onto some established big namer/studio brand (like EA, Sony...where creativity goes to die), especially not through XBLA junk (try the IGF/GDC first, instead, they have better channels for promoting indies). And if you really want into the industry, start shopping (whoring) yourself out to any games company that's looking to hire entry level programmers. Though, I'd say you've already broken onto the game industry. You've made a game and got it published. So screw them all, you're out there! Good luck, you meshuganeh bytepusher! P.S.Wait, I didn't argue the title name, yet! Post Post-ScriptumI just recalled Rumble In The Void...Oh, My, Vint Cerf! And yeah, them ATMOS guys did excellent job on EV:Nova. I must've played that game for a month or something. The thirdparty editing tool albeit primitive, but you could do a lot of nice things with that engine. Edited November 7, 2009 by Ori Klein Quote

There is background music in the game. I just turned it off it show off the sound effects. I got from the UK doing the music, and it's pretty sweet. I just need to get his lazy ass to do a few finishing touches. Quote
rootbear75 Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 when you do release the game can we get codes to redeem for the game? Quote

Gravitron Posted November 10, 2009 Report Posted November 10, 2009 babble booble May I suggest that instead of quoting entire walls of text for the sole purpose of throwing inane drivel and insults, you'd actually post coherent counter-arguments with that which you disagree? Quote
ckcornflake Posted November 12, 2009 Author Report Posted November 12, 2009 when you do release the game can we get codes to redeem for the game? I will release the game within a month or two. It's pretty much done, I just gotta play test the hell out of it with my friends. You will be able to play the demo for free, but if you want to play multiplayer it will cost 240 or 400 points (the equivalent of $3 or $5)...I haven't decided between those prices yet. I think I might get some redeem codes for the game. I'll see if I have any left over after I send them to reviewers. Quote

So, I see you've deteriorated to the level of a kindergarten. Pity. Edited November 12, 2009 by Ori Klein Quote
