rootbear75 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) ok guys my computer is trashed and im at my wits end. Before I contemplate going thru either of these options: __1__ __2__ I want help from you.Symptoms:not really much to go here..XP WILL NOT BOOT. PERIOD.Not normally, not Safe Mode, not Safe Mode w/ networking, not Safe mode with command prompt, and not LKGC.ALSO: After inserting the XP disk and attempting to repair/install it, it will not recognize the hard drive, so that prevents me from getting onto the hard drive using the XP disk.Thirdly.... the stop error i get is: 0x00000007B( i tried a different XP install disk not sure how old, and i got 0x00000007E... i think this is irrelevant, maybe an error on the CD) HOWEVER: figuring the Hard Drive was the cause of all of this, I ran my computers internal Hard Drive Diagnostics, and it passed. googling the ERROR however, says that some piece of hardware is having a problem.I'm thinking maybe the hard drive needs to be reseated, but that doesnt explain how the hard drive diagnostics could pass and read the hard drive...What I've Tried:repair using XP OEM CDinstall using XP OEM CDtrying to boot an XP Boot diskWhat I would prefer NOT to do:New hard drive (because it says it's good, and i got it 8 months ago) Any ideas? L.C. Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) I would recommend downloading and burning Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and running a scan on your harddrive to check for faults and failures. You may additionally want download, burn and run Memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/) to check for faulty RAM (unlikely, but it really doesn't hurt to run this for a few hours). If your RAM is faulty, replace them.If your HDD is faulty or has problems, you may be able to backup some of the content on it but you will definitely need to get a new harddrive. Please report back with test results. Edited October 28, 2009 by L.C.
»Lynx Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 I'd follow the options that L.C. has already highlighted, and If you've had your HDD for only 8 months, it is more than likely still under warranty.
rootbear75 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) k thats better... i was looking for a free one... let me test EDIT: FFS, windows doesnt come with an ISO cd-burning utility... and i cant install anything on this computer because 1) its not mine, and 2) I don't have a password to bypass the UACEDIT2: Nevermind, found one... once i burn i'll do the tests.EDIT3: MemTest running now Edited October 28, 2009 by rootbear75
rootbear75 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 MemTest completed: Results: PASS. No Errors. As for the hard drive, None of the diagnostic programs could detect a HD.I'm going to try and re-seat it tomorrow when i wake up and get the tools to get into my laptop. ALSO: LC, did you know that the UBCD had a version of MemTest86+ on it.
»Lynx Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 You should look for warranty information, too.
L.C. Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) ALSO: LC, did you know that the UBCD had a version of MemTest86+ on it. I had a strong suspicion it did, but it isn't the latest version (v4.00) either. I realize now that you are probably saying this in that you used one more CD than you wanted to. I apologize. Memtest86+ passing you is good. Your RAM is okay!None of the HDD tools working -- meh! Who manufactured your HDD? Seagate? Maxtor? Fuji? If you can find this out, perhaps you might be able to go to that company's website and find diagnostics tools that would work on your HDD. You could also try booting up onto an Ubuntu Live CD, mount your HDD and try to explore it and open text files, pictures and videos and see what happens. If your HDD fails in trying to do that, your HDD is most likely at fault. If you still have warranty on the drive, see how much data you can backup from your HDD before sending it in. They won't give you back your data. Edited October 28, 2009 by L.C.
»doc flabby Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Might be worth googling your HDD model...i know seagate ones had a firmware issue a while back, my brother got a new drive for free...but lost all his data
Drake7707 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 hdds have a bathtub graph in terms of faulty hardware, either it's within the first year or after 4-5 years that a hdd fails, yours appears to the the first one.
rootbear75 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 i just need to get my HD opened, and once i find a small enough screwdriver i will...
rootbear75 Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) reseated the hard drive, blew some compressed air in there to get rid of excess dust.Still wont boot, and the seagate diagnostic tools on the UBCD dont detect it either. as for the data, I NEED THIS HD.. i know the data is still good.its got personal documents on there that i stupidly forgot to print out/back up (tax info, etc.) Edited October 28, 2009 by rootbear75
JoWie Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Try plugging the harddrive in another computer or one of these:http://www.virtual-hideout.net/reviews/Scythe_Kama_Connect/images/00.jpg If that does not work, it will probably set you back $1000 minimum to get the data back.
»doc flabby Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 (edited) i just need to get my HD opened, and once i find a small enough screwdriver i will...Thats like the worst, like absolute worst thing you could possibly do. Tell us what the make and model of the HDD is, and we might be able to help you more... I suspect if its seagate its got a firmware of death bug The data was retrievable but you'll probably totally fucked it now you've opened the case...like you're probably need to spend ALOT of $ to get anything off it now...you might be lucky though...so worth a try: http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16246 Edited October 28, 2009 by doc flabby
rootbear75 Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) k i didnt mean OPEN the actual hard drive, i meant open to computer to get at it.also for the UBCD, the diagnostics software on it is not up to date.third: I downloaded the updated Seagate HD tools and it passed all of the tests (Short and Long) test. If it is a boot virus, what can I use to get rid of it? M/M of HD: Seagate ST9320320ASSeagate Momentus 5400.5 320GB Edited October 29, 2009 by rootbear75
Samapico Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 What I'd do is plug the drive on another comp, (attempt to) backup your stuff, then send it to the manufacturer
rootbear75 Posted October 29, 2009 Author Report Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) What I'd do is plug the drive on another comp, (attempt to) backup your stuff, then send it to the manufacturerThat is one of the options but i dont have money for a hard drive enclosure. Only got a few hundred bucks in the bank and thats going to rent and car insurance. (being unemployed sucks) if someone on here doesnt mind lending me like 20 bucks for one, i'd greatly appreciate it, but you dont have to Oh and as for the Ubuntu Live CD, the 2 ISOs i tried were corrupted and didnt boot. I don't want to waste any more CDs...LC, do you have a link to a good version? Edited October 29, 2009 by rootbear75
Samapico Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 You don't need a hard drive enclosure... It's not a laptop, right? You just find a friend with a computer, open it up, plug the drive as secondary drive, and it should appear as another partition
»CypherJF Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I'd try using a LiveCD such as Knoppix to see if everything is working OK (minus the HD - the entire OS resides in memory); I've done thus in past when I had 6 weeks left of school and really needed my laptop working.
rootbear75 Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 i did that last time my hard drive failed, but having already wasted a few CDs, i need a link to a GOOD version of Ubuntu (preferably)
rootbear75 Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 WOO! Found my Hard Drive enclosure.Put hard drive in, and all data seems fine.Going to scan it now for viruses, and see if i can just repair it instead.Only problem, Vista not letting me access my own user on the old HD... sighgot to get the password
L.C. Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 (edited) Source of problem: Motherboard = Very LikelyNorthbridge chipset = LikelySouthbridge chipset = LikelySATA/IDE controllers = Likely It isn't your HDD that has the problem if it works perfectly fine via external setup. rootbear75 Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 I managed to get my OLD failed hard drive to work by repairing bad sectors so im using that to get stuff off of it. How can it be my motherboard/chipset/controllers, if it boots another Hard Drive successfully. It seems like a corrupted boot record to me or a virus.
L.C. Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 How can it be my motherboard/chipset/controllers, if it boots another Hard Drive successfully. It seems like a corrupted boot record to me or a virus.Hmm yes, you have a point there... If it is a virus, it would be a rootkit.
rootbear75 Posted October 31, 2009 Author Report Posted October 31, 2009 i need a standalone virus scan with updated definitions. The current hard drive i put into the computer wont use my wireless radio, and I dont have an ethernet connection I can use.I need a downloadable that has the virus definitions... something like HouseCall by TrendMicro, but not something that downloads stuff to install itself.
