Did a year or so of zone hosting on SSI biller when 1stStrike was king. Now I'm doing next to nothing. <_< Quote

L.C. Posted October 16, 2009 Report Posted October 16, 2009 (edited) Part 1 For a little bit back in 1998 to 2000 I played in Alpha West, and then I ended up going to Death Star Battle and playing there most of the time. Also hung out in Subicide occasionally. In 2000 or 2001 (whenever the zone was started), Dragonball Z became my home zone. I remember some of TeHsU's zones, although I do not remember any of their titles. Throughout the years I gained the rank of community flamebait and biggest loser, quit in 2005 or 2006 as a result, but checked back in once every year. I think the first time I did it under a different alias for concealment, but then went back to L.C./L.C. (BH) when the annual reunions in Dragonball Z were held. Also throughout the years I tried to run a network off of my home Internet. I tried many different network names, including SSDC (SubSpace Domain Central) and SSnet. I forgot what network names I used before SSDC (the oldest I can remember, but I know there were some network names before). I know I hosted a zone that I made up called "Night Hawk" or something. The zone "Paintball," owned by , I remember that I was very much obsessed with that zone, but it was practically a dead zone still online, so I asked the owner if I could take over the zone to run it and get it some population, but he gave a very blunt and cold no answer. I also remember when Spade12 started Omega Fire -- it was before the zone had a name. He was showing me the map he/he and his pals were working on for the zone, and he was asking me for suggestions and see what I thought about it. It was a red-themed map. I also remember him asking me for suggestions as to what to name the zone, and I came up with Omega Fire, and to my surprise, after the zone launched months later or whatever, Spade12 used my suggestion. There was a zone that istink2 and a few other people from Dragonball Z (including me) participated in creating called "Extreme Battle." I still kind of remember what it's angelfire website looked like. *shudders at remembering the whole "Dementor bot" drama* One of the guys participating, I think his username started with the letter F, but he was mainly in charge of doing the settings for the zone and he was a pro at copying other zone's settings from scratch. istink2 took advantage of my immaturity, gullibility, and childishness by "programming a bot" that could think and function on its own with a digitally conscious thought. The bot could chat through ICQ and play through Subspace. I remember istink2 telling me that "Dementor" meant that that it was a bot that could think and decide consciously. The bot's username was Dementor-Baby or something like that. But really, in the end, it was istink2 behind the wheels of a second client and alias, tricking me in thinking this was actually a bot. People like TeHsU (unconfirmed) and bigshot3754 (confirmed, under the alias of something like "Faresante" or "Farsent" or something -- I think it was a Spanish word or name) targeted me specifically in an effort to manipulate and screw around with my immaturity, age, gullibility, etc by through trojans, hacking, etcetera. I fell for their traps every single time for a countless number of times, and ended up going to my cousins crying over my computer and hoping that it could be fixed and put back into operating condition. I also sent off an e-mail to the attacker in all capitals with things that you might expect from a child between ages 7 and 11, like "IM GONNA REPORT U 2 THE FBI THEYR GOIN 2 THROW U IN JAIL AND PUNISH U" (was along these lines, except a whopping two or so paragraphs). I also remember when PriitK replied to one of my threads to him on the Subspace/Continuum Report a Bug forum telling me to "stfu" and "gtfo" and I don't remember what else he said...but essentially publically flaming and whipping me. I remember ICQ used to be big back then for communication. I remember back when sscentral.com offered webhosting for SubSpace related material with unlimited bandwidth and space, and I signed up for one and was given an FTP. I remember sending an e-mail (to who I think was Polix) about "how do I create my website?" or stuff relating to what an FTP is and how to use it...I don't remember ever getting a reply back, and I remember that I was kind of frustrated figuring out how to create a website since I had absolutely no X/HTML/CSS/Photoshop/etc experience. Did I ever mention that it's a shame that I grew up in Subspace? FYI I'm currently 18 years old, and I have played or been a part of this community between/since 1998 to 2006, hopping in and out until 2008, and since 2008 still here. I'm at work, and everyone has already left, so I need to close up. I'll write more if I feel like it. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Part 2 I remember when I had asked Catid if he could help me setup MERVBot, I think, and he did...but he also manipulated me into giving him the zone SysOp password so that he could mutilate the zone and kickban everyone and stuff. He was helping me inside the zone I was trying to get it in. I think it was a zone I was hosting/running. I remember when Continuum first got the LVZ feature and then this Grand Theft Auto zone came out. I remember that I loved that zone a lot...eventually got mod after a while, but then I think I got fired because someone framed me for something I didn't do or made up lies to get me fired. Then there was that one Basketball/Jam zone. I got pretty good at that zone...I can't remember if I was hired as a moderator there at some point or not. This was also sometime after LVZ. I remember when one of the major Continuum releases, I think 0.37, was released and there was only ONE zone running the Subgame that was compatible with it. Within the minutes to hour after the 0.37 release, that zone had more players than any Subspace zone I ever saw...made Trench Wars look like a wuss. It had some SVS map on, maybe it was _bzw, and there were like 100 to 200 players playing simultaneously in each public arena, waiting for the other Subspace zones to get patched with 0.37 compatibility. This was an exciting moment for me. I remember Gemini Dream and the Survivor zone. I remember Death+'s "sidekick" programmer, can't believe I just forgot his name...but I remember him showing me this AI bot that he made...it was definitely better than Bjorn's AI bot by a million times from the looks of how the AI bot played against itself and in the arena. (This is as recent within the last 2 years.) I remember when Death+ and I setup to test Subgame's population limits with MERVBot. (This is recent within the last 2 years.) I remember when I had a lot of problems getting Subspace v1.3x to work. That crack never seemed to work. I would enter Death Star Battle and I would always get that warning countdown message on screen that I am using the trial/demo version and will be booted. I never got 1.35/1.4 to work...and maybe let alone figure out where to get the patch and stuff. Can't remember if there even was a patch for it...maybe there was and I tried it but then got that trial/demo warning message or something saying it's shareware or whatever. I remember playing in Dragonball GT for a little bit. I remember istink2 and I making fun of sco11 and Stardust### (I think there were numbers in her name) in a subarena/private arena when they were having a conversation via private message. I remember when you could impress fellow players by importing a map from another zone as a subarena. That, and I remember when I copied out the DSB base and put it in this 'city' map or whatever me and istink2 were working on together for fun. I think the map might be somewhere on BlueT Dragonball Z. I also remember that one racing map I made for DBZ. I remember when me and my cousin made our first map in SSME and wondered how it was possible to test and play our maps. After a while, I figured out how and we played our maps. It was fun. My first base was some tiny, super cramped and thick base with 255 or whatever the max turf flags in one room. I think I still have the maps somewhere. One of the things that have surprised/amazes me over the years...is compared to "back then," original playing buddies like istink2, my cousins, sco11, and various other ... how they have changed in maturity and the things they do now...it's very surprising to me. Back then, istink2 and I were innocent playing buddies (thinking around the time when we were both working on that one 'city' map and arena in DBZ)...and then now, last I heard, he's into smoking pot and what sounds like a "dirty" lifestyle (compared to my description of "innocent playing buddies). I remember Tankdan from DBZ...I remember how it was sad and a shame to see him leave the staff/get fired from his position and then leave the zone and never appear again. I liked him very much...kind of saw him as a hero. I remember when I was hired as a pre-mod in DBZ after "such a looong time". I got "fired" or quit very soon after being hired due to an emotional/mental breakdown during the training/debriefing session. I remember when I was a really good player in DBZ, like the height of skill. It was on the old map...one of the versions of the current public arena map in BlueT Dragonball Z right now. There was a lot of pride and excitement, and the positive and "looking up to" attention I got from players around that time. I also remember that one "Player of the Year" event in DBZ. I managed to win it. I want to say that this was before I moved from Oregon and was on my cable connection before they upgraded the line to T1/T3.. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Part 3 Grand Theft Auto was made by sideburn from DS, and smong pretty much coded everything. NBA Jam basketball was a classic too, owned by evil jin/drizzit/mortal kombat, and i think he still plays, long time, was fun stuff. Ah, memories.Yes, this is it. I recognize the names and associations. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Part 4 I remember when I pooped and soiled my pants a lot because I was so addicted to Subspace. And FYI, this was an "issue" before the age of 12. (Laughing permitted.) I remember when this non-sscentral.com group/network/people offered webhosting for Subspace related content, just like sscentral.com. They offered specific setups of CMS too -- I chose PHP-Nuke and set it up and everything. Then someone in this community decided to toy with me by using PHP-Nuke's exploits to totally deface and mutilate the website. I remember that one zone that started with "Omni" -- I remember when it first came online for public play. I remember Super Ships, although I never really played in it. I remember it as having a lot of players...and I think Snarklord/Underlord or whatever hung out in that zone. I only picked up on Super Ships for play for a little while a year or two ago when Death+ was still around. Zone had a very small population, but I kind of found it fun...was fun when dialup wasn't freaking out and let me play in the zone with minimal issues. And why is my name in MERVBot's operators.txt file? I have always wondered about that for years now. I remember playing a little bit in T3 The Guantlet every once in a while. I always thought that it was like some sort of totally independent little gaming community separate from SSForum/SSCentral/SubSpace.net, mainly because of the network title "T3." And I always thought it was hosted on a server on a T3 line. I remember that there was some "Tejas" zone in the server list...or maybe it was "Badlands" or something. But for some reason, I associated it with Texas. I also remember that there was a zone "Witchdoom" in the server list. Never liked the name, but it sticks out. Oh hey, just remembered. Regarding being targeted, hacked, and manipulated...one day we found our Internet connection (when living in Portland, Oregon) canceled mysteriously/by unknown for unknown reason. I remember that our ISP was first @Home, and then AT&T. Our internet connection got canceled while on AT&T. We called them up about it and everything and they told us that our internet was "canceled" and that there didn't seem to be any reason or purpose tied to why it was canceled. Anyway, they came out and completely replaced our line with a line for T1/T3 internet. I'm wanting to think that somehow our original line got killed or something...but I wouldn't understand how that would cancel our internet with AT&T. I think they tried to turn the internet back on but had difficulties or something...and thus were forced to come out and totally replace the line as a "last-ditch" effort to try and get everything working the way it's supposed to. All this happened in such a timely way that I want/ed to think someone in this community hacked into AT&T or something and canceled our internet...because this was all so timely and correct with the way things were going. I remember the first time I saw Subspace. It was when dialup was around and you had those free dialup services where they forced an advertisement to be displayed on your screen. My cousin flew around in Powerball I think. I remember seeing horizontal walls with nails/horns/sharp things sticking out, and the radar indicated that there were two goals (left side and right side), and players always chasing a powerball. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Part 5 (October 17th, 2009) PS. Thanks for the spoiler tags, whoever edited that in. Forgot they existed. I remember the very first time I was introduced to actual staff/mod/subgame commands. I do not remember the zone name, but I think it was a "random" non-SSC zone that I joined and there were a few people there. One of the staff members there, who I'm pretty sure probably had SysOp powers, had taken the time to teach me how staff powers actually work and what the different levels are (mod, smod, sysop). He demonstrated some of the basic commands, like *arena, and tested me by letting me type in some lines of my own so that I could figure out/understand the functions. He either did *moderate or *sysop on me, but I think when he was showing me the basic staffing commands we were the only two in the zone at the time. I kind of have a vivid image in my head of what scene in the map I was looking at when he was teaching/talking with me through the chat. I think it was after this "random encounter" that I officially began to look into running a zone of my own, because up until this I never really knew what a "zone" was, or the difference between zone and server, or "subgame" or any of that stuff. Maybe if it weren't for this guy (above paragraph), I would have had a super late start in learning the server-side stuff of Subspace. I remember that back before I learned anything about server related things for Subspace, I never really knew that mod/smod/sysop levels existed...just saw that there was a "staffing" dominion or domain part of the zone, and they had secret powers nobody knew about and people always looked up to the staffers like BBS administrators from the 1980s to 1990s...same or similar reputation/honor in other words. I didn't know what the staff members in a zone could do -- like, I didn't know the specific things they could actually do...I just knew they had power and were the ones in charge. It always felt special to meet a staff member of a zone. Then, when I was introduced to the server-side of things, everything/my perspective on the whole game began to quickly change because I began to see the other half to everything. Sometimes I wish I never learned any of this stuff, because I always enjoyed the mystery and the special warm and fuzzy feeling when meeting a staff member. I remember when I tried out Twister. I don't know how I got it, but maybe I found it through Google by some "lucky" search keywords. It took me a while to figure it out, but eventually I did...and once I did...I let her rip...in Trench Wars. I did some casual/subtle things, then I warped outside the asteroid belt and bragged about it to players. Then I respawned and gave myself infinite bursts and totally annihilated the arena of 45+ simultaneous players. Man, it was awesome. But do you know how long my username "L.C." was locked out from the entire SSC network (it wasn't just a netban, I couldn't even get in-game!)? I think the ban was for 3 or so years. Because of this, I ended up using L.C. (BH) or some other known alias the whole time. I remember when I was so happy to be able to login to SSC and use my username L.C. again. I missed the username. I remember when someone/some people in this community taught me some basic uses of Cheat Engine on Continuum in BlueT/private/offline. I remember being taught the sequence in CE for changing ship sizes from 1 pixel to as large as I wanted...used it to "wall hack". This was like two years ago. I remember when 1stStrike offered me a moderator/super moderator position for his zone 1stStrike before the zone launched or went public. I declined his offer (can you believe that?). I later went to him and asked if his offer is still open (after the zone had launched and gotten popular of course), and he said no. Last year I found some of chat logs between Stardust### and I in my Trillian Pro backups. My old e-mail account that I used frequently "back then" is still alive and working -- ssnet94@icqmail.com. And I still remember the password I used for it too. I remember that one of TeHsU's zones were called "Dream"-something...or had the word Dream in it or something related to it. It was one of those smooth/dreamy kind of zone names. I remember when 17th Parallel was popular and had a population. I remember when Alpha West SVS had a daily/constant population of 50 to 75 players. Oh dear...VIE Jackpot, VIE Running Zone, VIE Sheep Cloning Facility, VIE Powerball, VIE Philosophy Club, VIE Warzone, VIE Chaos East, SSCX Extreme Games, WLI Annihilation, SSCU Chaos Expert, SSCX Powerball, SSCX Warzone, SSCX SCF, SSCX Star Warzone, SSCE Euro League, SSCU Pro League, SSCE Chaos West, XXX-Ream, StarTrek DS9, SSCU Dueling Arizona,Ringing bells for me. Remembering seeing these zones in the list are just at the very edge of my memories...I hardly remember them. Having flashbacks back to the old Subspace client now. :X I think a few of these zones I might be remembering from the zone list at the time my cousin played it, which was probably when Subspace was released to the Internet for free play or something...I know it was when VIE zones were still running. Stardust's username is Stardust936, and her first name is Jewel. I also remember this player "Screennam123." He was a great playing buddy for the Jackpot SVS I host. He loved Jackpot Zone. ************************************************************ ************************************************************ Part 6 (October 23rd, 2009) Combined 'dir' listings from several of my backups. 1337aA3 Counter Strike SRC EMUAges Of WarAmerican Online GamingAS3 Battle Ballas3 digiasaasdaB_M Zofo DevBeta Subspace Zoneblahblue Mondayblue mondayBlueT Counter-Strike 2DBlueT Dragonball ZBlueT Extreme WarsBlueT HostingBlueT InfinityBlueT Jackpot SVSBlueT Jackpot SVS (Bots)BlueT Mobile Suit GeminiBlueT Mobile Suit GundamBlueT Safety ZoneBlueT SpeedballBlueT WormholeBlueT Wormhole (Offline)CBCC Extreme BattleCSSS SURVIVORCSSS USD AnnihilationCypherJF's Test ZoneCZ Cheese ZoneCZ Flying FuryDevelopment ZoneDevTestDigital CoreDragonball ZDragonball Z (Dev)Dragonball Z AS3Dumb ZoneJackpot SVSJackpot SVS (SSC)Killer ZoneLocal Area NetworklocalhostOffline ZonePB NetworkCentralPeer0Peer1PSS STF Test ZonePublic Biller HQRAVEnet Zones (SSC)RSX Into The MoatSS Jackpot SVSSS Jackpot SVS (Dev)SS Jackpot SVS (local)SSA Digital Core (AS3)SSA South TejasSSAC HostSSBD Descent 3SSCA Digital Core (CTF)SSCA SupernovaSSCB Mystic KingdomSSCB RedStarSSCB Super FortressSSCC Desert StormSSCC Halo CTFSSCC Metal Gear CTFSSCC Omega FireSSCC RicochetSSCC Star Wars EmpireSSCC The ComplexSSCC Unreal TournamentSSCE Hockey ZoneSSCE HockeyFootball ZoneSSCE HyperspaceSSCI Battle Field 2SSCI BattlefieldSSCI Dragonball ZSSCI Dragonball Z (Old)SSCI FusionSSCI HaloSSCI Mystic KingdomSSCI PenisSSCI Quantum ArenaSSCI Red PlanetSSCI Subspace DevelopmentSSCI SupernovaSSCI Unreal TournamentSSCI-A HyperspaceSSCL HyperspaceSSCT Paintball!SSCT Super FortressSSCU 17th ParallelSSCU Death Star BattleSSCU Extreme GamesSSCU Super ShipsSSCU Trench WarsSSCU Trench Wars (DEV)SSCX Alpha West SVSSSCX ChaosLeague Zone SVSSSCX Extreme GamesSSCX PowerBallSSCX Star WarzoneSSCX Warzone CTFSSE BillingSSFF Flyin FurySSFF Snow WarsSSFF Super FlySSHK MiracleSSI TWDev TestingSSLAN Jackpot SVSSSLAN2 Jackpot SVSSSM C&C Base WarsSSM Naruto RPGSSM SSDev (ASSS)SSO ZeldaMotWSSOE Trust & BetrayalSST Jackpot SVSSST Omega FireSSU JackpotT3 The Gauntlet!
