The post by Warhammer got me thinking, what acctually is the "backstory" to SubSpace.

I mean there must be a reason we are flying around in spaceships blowing each other up?

All the ships and zones have special names and stuff.

A taste?

Really you had to be there I think. Most of SS history gets lost with the players that were there and leave. It's rare to find someone who was around for Sniper or even early Subspace nowadays. I remember not 6-7 years ago they were still fairly abundant however.

Now I suppose a vet is anyone who remembers the Continuum client release, back in 2001 that was certainly not the case blum.gif

I don't think Subspace has a backstory.. like to why everyone is in Spaceships. Or what the goal is of the whole game. It's just a spaceship shooter game.. and really nothing else XD

It has a history of when it was made and population changes, etc but as far as storyline. no?

Well, the intro movie shows a mothership... and a fight around it.

But since it's zone-based, I'm pretty sure each zone is meant to have its own storyline. Though I'm not familiar with the original zones back in the Subspace day... Perhaps they represented different fronts of the battle or something.

The .doc manual doesn't say much: http://www.ssdownloads.com/index.php?act=file&fid=465

All the original's I remember were just the different types of flagging/powerball zones. The first actual theme based zone with any type of backstory probably would have been Vespar's Starship Wars T1 that was based on Star Wars. Edited by Gallitin

There was no story. The game was never really completed when VIE went bankrupt. They tried to prevent bankruptcy by releasing the game. It didn't help. When the game released that movie made the game look a lot more exciting than it really was. However this game did lay the groundwork for future MMO's.

As stated, there was no back story. Nor was supposed to be one much, really.

Rod was tinkering with alien back-settings at the time which inspired Juan to include the alien mothership to signify the alien presence.

Since SubSpace was rushed to retail to save the bankrupting VIE it never came to full maturity and was not integrated properly, or rather, omitted in its entirety.

The Shark was supposed to be an alien-driven ship design, originally.
