I just ordered some new RAM and a video card for my machine, weeeee!

Setup:

Pentium D 2.8GHz

2x512MB RAM (266MHz) Up to: 2x1GB RAM (667MHz)

nVidia 7300GT 512MB Up to: Radeon HD 4670

Gonna make some 3Dmark / PCmark tests to get a before/after thing

2x1GB of PC-5300 RAM is the most I can put in my motherboard.

70$ for the GPU on Newegg

Also ordered a cheap analog TV tuner thing with a RCA video input

'tis gonna be fun.

PS: I'm not trying to boast cause I know my rig is very average... you can post your overclocked quad cores with 1000$ worth of video cards and some neon lights in the case anyway if you want blum.gif

I've got 4x 2GB (800MHz) ram. There's nothing like it. It really wasn't that expensive. Have to run a 64-bit operating system to take advantage of it, but that's why God invented Linux.

Rofl, Dr Brain! I'm sitting here on a 5-year-old laptop w/640MB ram and an "Intel Pentium 4-M" Processor. I really need a new one because I just bought Team Fortress 2 only to discover I can't run it :) Plus it would help my 3D-modeling/not making my computer's fans so loud when I am playing continuum on your zone blum.gif

So that's like 16GB of ram?

Had 1700 VirtualMarks on the online test

Also, here's some memory/CPU benchmarks from Everest:

Memory Read: 5794 MB/s

Memory Write: 4158 MB/s

Memory Copy: 4066 MB/s

Memory Latency: 117.4 ns

CPU Queen: 1591

CPU PhotoWorxx: 2409

CPU ZLib: 7941 MB/s

CPU AES: 1674

FPU Julia: 694

FPU Mandel: 495

FPU SinJulia: 219

Gonna do these tests again when I get teh new stuff

a common system has an i7 and 295? D: guess thats common for the people that run 3dmark

Yeah, had the same thought... I'd guess it's just because they are sponsored and have to sell these things. I still expect my score to fail badly compared to it when I get my new card :S

On a side note, I'm downloading Windows 7 (yes, legally; gotta love MSDN AA)

I might give it a try if I feel like reformatting...

Try it in an emulator first blum.gif

You get Windows7 free if your a student? *signs up*

BTW I know what 4*4 is. :)

You can get Windows 7 and other Microsoft software free if you have an MSDNAA subscription that includes it. Many colleges and universities offer MSDNAA accounts to their students. Additionally, if you're an IEEE student member, you have an MSDNAA account through them.

Edit: Also, Sama, what are you doing upgrading a computer as old as that? New computers are cheap to buy or build!

Look, spending 100$ on this machine is MUCH LESS expansive than building a new one... and it's not like I could not put these pieces in an eventual new build...

"As old as that", it's less than 3 years old... it's not that old ô.o

Then you suck at reading?

Can build something under $300 and still do better than that $506 machine

i doubt it, i can see you paying a bit over 400 for similar parts if you downgrade to ddr2 and find some nice combo deals, but otherwise theres no way buying new.
