Drake7707 Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 10 questions for chrome OS http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2349845,00.asp It'll be useful for a quick lookup on the internet (if it's really instant on) if your computer is off, but not as a main os. I mean, stuff in the cloud is doomed to fail with shitty internet connections (and I haven't forgotten the last time i used google docs, it reversed changes as if they were never there, losing 2 days work). Nothx google, i'll stick to vista or win7
»doc flabby Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I think it will be successful in its niche (netbooks). The current version they are planning for release is not designed for general purpose computing. The operating system on your mobile phone (The main ones are Symbian, Linux and Windows Mobile) are pretty specialised and on millions of devices. If it wants to make it onto general purpose computers, they will have to make it alot more than just a webbrowser to get sucessful...People will expect the same level of utility they get from Windows, Max OS and Ubuntu Windows 7 is looking pretty sweet, as, i have read you get a copy of Windows XP free with it that runs in a virtual machine, so you can run all your older XP applications with no issues! If they include this, it will be a real winner, at least at my place of work where we have alot of legacy applications, this is the main deal breaker with Vista at the moment, it breaks half our programs....
PoLiX Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/ Old one was free, so new one is planned to be. Last I heard from MS it was going to be atleast.
PoLiX Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 I agree. I forget where I once read it, but it was in the high 60s percent of computer users, that only use a computer to check e-mail and browse the web. They rarely, if ever, play game, and barely use any apps beyond Internet Explorer or Firefox (depending on OS). So really, Google is aimed at a HUGE percentage of the computer base when you get into it. And toss in the fact, 100% of computer users browse the web, they're aimed at everyone. I think it is worth a try on their part.
»Lynx Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 Anything Google Chrome is nothing but speculation. If you expect Google Chrome to ever take out Microsoft, you'd have to be very, very optimistic. Microsoft is what it is today due to it's harsh marketing and contracts. Also, what's all this shit about 'Why did they choose Linux, when Linux is so hard to run blah blah' - Every major operating system other than Windows has some kind of *nix background. Even OS X is Unix under a pretty UI. -L
Drake7707 Posted July 13, 2009 Report Posted July 13, 2009 I doubt many people will make the switch, those who are only using their computers for email and browser are pc illiterate enough that they will stick to things they already know, even if it's totally obvious (or more obvious than what they are using) with COS. Also they listen to the sales persons when they buy a new computer, and he/she would be really dumb to suggest COS over Windows, as they probably get more money selling windows based machines. And those who do other stuff on a PC, they need a bigger OS with more features. I wouldn't even recommend using COS to anyone because i had quite a few bad experiences with google apps and i've heard the same of others. It's quite impossible to predict what the general population will use in the future (look at the iPhone, totally retarded overpriced phone with features only 1% of the people use, but it 'looks' cool and it 'makes' you cool if you have one)
