and I think it's in the realm of ~350 infections in the entire world...with ~6.7 billion people...that means 5.22 x 10^-8 % of the world population is infected by it...

Hell ~60,000,000 Americans each year get the influenza virus alone.

Just to put some perspective on it...right now you're about 70 times more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to catch this virus.

I think the main concern isn't the flu it's self, it's that this particular strain has been proven to be dangerous, contagious and could possibly mutate into a more dangerous strain (while of course, may not). A lot of people will just suffer from the Flu, but nevertheless, a lot of people will still die.

My main concern is rationing canned goods, water and power supplies before the imminent zombie attack! What's your zombie contingency plan?!

Oh, and way to miss the goddamn point you serious muh fuckas.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that's a totally shitty parody. Nice idea, bad execution.

Also, if I may be permitted to "miss the point," Lynx is correct - the current version of this isn't too bad, but if A) it comes back in 4-6 months on its own after bouncing around South America, or B) it gets into Egypt, rural China, or Southeast Asia and makes baby flu genes with H5N1, then it could be far, far worse. Instead of hundreds of cases, we could be looking at hundreds of millions, with a much higher fatality rate.

And... The media may be hyping this, but there are two reasons I don't mind: A) it's better than some of the non-stories the American media loves to put up (tea parties, anyone? ;O), B) it really is good to get this into people's minds right now, so that if it does in fact mutate later on in the year, we don't have thousands of people going to NFL games and infecting entire cities at once.

The likelihood of H1N1 mutating with H5N1 is extremely low, since H1N1 spreads through humans, while H5N1 spreads through animals. Although it's possible that someone who contracted H1N1, and then gets in extremely close prolonged & repetitive contact with infected birds (saliva, regurgitation, or excrements), could potentially have them both recombine to form a new strain, once again, as with any potentiality, there's nothing saying that it would become more dangerous than H1N1 alone (H5N1 may actually hinder the spreadibility of the new influenza). What you should be worried about is if H5N1 recombines itself with more common strains of H1N2 and H3N2, which already affect and can be spread via mammals, poultry, and humans.

Anyone watched the movie "Andromeda Strain"? Would be interesting if it mutates into that but its impossible.

The flu is blow out of proportion...but I guess it brings up awareness.

read the book, it's better

the UK media has been quite measured.

They have been talking about how bad it could get (the infection may be in the lag phase after all) but they are not playing it up as impending doom.

There have been some school closures, people isolated and such but that's all sensible IMO and will delay the issue until a vaccine is ready.

all in all people think that it may break out, if it does you are most likly to be fine.

Too bad the vaccine will be ready in four months. :o

Thankfully the northern hemisphere is entering summer which will limit the spread. By the time winter comes it should be ready and deployed which will limit the impact of the virus, and protect the most vulnerable reducing the mortality rate also.

Well if the rabies virus happend 10x faster then normal, then we would have a zombie like apocalypse blum.gif

What has rabies got to do with anything? only plausible link to the swine flu is to use it as a testament to well orchestrated virus control and thwn then its not really relevant given the very different behaviour of the virus to influenza.
