I played from just before they dropped the "sniper" name until 2000 or so. I ran a news site called "news.txt" for most of that period. Anyone around from back then?

I only started in 1998 and played all the up to like 2005-06 before quitting for a year or something and then coming back (after many of the flamers, old timers, and others left the game). I run a zone called BlueT Jackpot SVS, which is supposed to be a rerun of Jackpot Zone and some of the older gameplay features (such as the player with the most points in the arena being allowed to use the Nightwasp, or ship 7 [Lancaster], and that only SysOps can use Ship dirol.gif. The zone also contains all the VIE maps ever made (including Sniper maps and in-between maps from the first SubSpace client to the latest).

One time I played in one of those Chaos Flag Deathmatch Tournaments, and I was on dialup at the time (this was a couple years ago); I enjoyed that event so much despite my poor internet connection that it gave me more motivation to work on Jackpot SVS. I still have to finish the forum at http://jackpotsvs.hlrse.net/ before getting a domain, advertising it and submitting it to the SSCentral Navbar, as well as a request for SSC authorization. I didn't really make any part of the zone, but more-so it's a situation that I compiled everything together. Some stuff I did make though, like the news.txt, the graphics and styles for the forum (graphics made from complete scratch; some images may borrow an element or two from original VIE/client graphics though). The Sniper maps and stuff I also had to manually "remake" from scratch since I couldn't just grab the *.lvl file. I know that there's one map in particular that I have not finished retiling; there were two or three Sniper maps that I cloned and I retiled all but one. I also plan on making a clone of the original Sniper tileset and making a Sniper tileset-original version of the maps (the ones so far use my creative exploration with modern VIE tiles).

One of the features that, unfortunately due to complications, could not include in Jackpot SVS was the part where you could get stuck inside the middle of a wormhole. Based on the research that I did (I did a lot of going around, back and forth, asking random players in Trench Wars, Chaos and other zones [the ones you might consider "newbs" or people that just play and never show themselves in the community, such as the forums], etcetera), if you got sucked into a wormhole and couldn't manage to escape it, you would be stuck suspended in the middle of the wormhole. The only thing you could do is shoot out from the wormhole at other players passing by (could not use bombs as they were affected by gravity), and to escape you could either be killed, use a portal, respawn, change ship, or attach to another player on the same frequency.

I enjoy SVS, VIE, and nostalgic material. I work with Jackpot SVS as a personal hobby sort of thing.

Could you please spend some time exporting your memories and as much thought possible about the old times here? I would love to read about it. Like, what is this news.txt site? What was it like? Do you remember what URL or website address it might have been at (so that I could use archive.org to see what it might have looked like)? I want to know more! :(

I started playing the game back in mid to late 1996. I remember Sniper well

and keep a copy of it to play from time to time. Though there is a Sniper are-

na in DSB, somewhere. As far as I know, I am only one of a handful or "original"

players left. How sad does that sound :(

Most people recall the terrible lag, which was bad for those still on a dial-up.

But I was at university at the time, so lag was never an issue for us. We num-

bered about two dozen or so and had a good time even with those still using

a dial-up.

As with many, my interest wanned when the game went pay-for-play. I refus-

ed to pay and could not be asked to continue playing with a cracked version.

Oh, the irony. Several years later I bought three pristine copies of Subspace

still in their original packaging and wrapping.

My hiatus began in 1998 and continued until late 2000. It was brief a revival

because I was off to university again. In 2002 I made a return, which at the

time I expected to last only a couple of months. 2009 and I'm still here. Joy!

Yes. My asian friend got me hooked. I remember spending most of my time in Chaos East(J12er!!!!) and Alpha(T20er!!!!). The name I was going by back then was a little embarassing however, "dang ol dog". That is all.

Hey, I remember you. Don't know if you remember me, I think I spent most of my time killing negs as THE GREEN MACHINE when you played. There are still a bunch of people around from back then. Check out SVS Chaos/League zone and Powerball zone, I think you will find some people you remember. You'll be happy to see that after 13 years people are still complaining about league rules, maps, and ship settings.

Since beta days I have been around. Just after negative bounty was removed and lead a squad that kills neggers.

I couldn't wait for the next patch to come out. I also miss the nightwasp.

Never purchased the game. CD crack all the way. Problem with this logic was that after every new version would come out, it would take a week or so for somebody to make a new crack! Not to mention being a demo sucked, since this game is all about building a reputation or at least some sort of stats. The game was only like $25, but of course I was a kid and wanted to spend my money on Green Day CDs and basketball cards.

I started playing around 95/96 i guess. I *think*, maybe, I saw an advertisement for subspace on the back of a C&C manual...?

I played mostly Alpha (T20), and I sucked so bad.... but I loved playing. I don't know what name I was using back then. But when the game went retail... I stopped playing for the most part. I played as a "Demo" a bunch of times, but it just wasn't the same smile.gif

I picked it up again after the the game became *free* again. And have been playing-off-and-on-and-on-and-off-and-on again since then. But moslty off... smile.gif But when I pick up the game again after being on hiatus, I'm almost as addicted as I was originally.

Right now... I'm not really playing the game. But I'm trying to model the ships in 3D. Just for the hell of it. I started with the Warbird, and If you look closely, the number on the Hull is T-20 in homage to the good-ol' Alpha days smile.gif

@No_Remorse: I'm pretty sure I remember you. Did you have a site called "Subspace 5". I designed a site by that name for a person by the name of "No_Remorse".

I started playing when I was 12 so 96, and I still got the disc (yes I was stupid enough to buy it)..

I've not played in a few years though..

What was so stupid about buying it?

I mean, I also bought it in '96 (and keep the whole box) and for all the hours of gameplay I've got I think it's pretty much a very good investment blum.gif

My mother bought the game for me because she watched me play in Alpha Zone or Dueling Arizona for as long as I could remember. I actually quit Diablo to play SubSpace hehe.

GREEN MACHINE: Hilarious. Yeah, I remember you dude. Awesome.

Does anyone else think it's hilarious that Priitk is a multibillionaire now? I kinda wish I'd sucked up to him more back in the day.
