After being a zone owner for 6 years you kinda loose your taste for actually playing the game. I stopped playing the game 8 years or so before I actually left it. Honestly, their just isn't enough tactics in SS to interest me anymore. I used to play SVS zones when they were actually popular, basically once Realms became MG I stopped playing. I loathe one shot kill settings, its like playing counter strike, nothing but a bunch of lame head shots. No energy management, no rationing of specials, no perfect timing for that final shot. All the zones have dumbed down their settings, basically _removing_ aspects of the game. Why? Because the 4 y/o's that this game is most popular with now, demand it. So I'm not saying that anything should change honestly, whatever the majority demand is the best course of action. But that's why I personally left.

Other than the fact the game was free, I got sucked in by community. Community makes and breaks games. If the player base is rubbish (As humans, not skill); the game loses a lot of appeal. Trash talk is fine, and I accept it as part of this game, but the hours of bullshit people spewed over the years took its toll.

When zones started peeling off from this forum establishment to make their own communities, it segregated us all as a whole. Now, instead of collectively storing ideas and speaking to strangers, you'd have to go to the zones individually. Most of us don't have time to do so. I still believe it was a horrible mistake for zones to leave a central community. The fact that the individual mentality existed was enough to disrupt the enjoyment I had playing in my zone.

Also, before the population started to drop fast, I think that I preferred working in a zone that didn't have much contact with other zones. I was a lot happier only having to deal with stuff within the zone, and only having to contact maybe a few other zone owners in a blue moon.

I didn't really "leave" so much as I take loooooooong breaks in between hours upon hours of hardcore SS playing in DSB (the only zone I have played regular in my 7 or so years). Personally, I have never seen any of the drama or e-politics some speak of, but then again I have never been involved in the managment aspect of a zone. I simply enjoy annihilating people who think just because I fly in a shark (a slow turtle of a bomber heh) that I should be an insta-kill =D

It's nice to take a year off, come back, and still have the skill to kill 60% of a zone's population heh

Hi All,

I'm pretty new to these forums, this post will be long and please avoid if you're going to be immature about my rambling... I'm a casual player who used to play a lot. I've played 4 zones DSB/TW/T3Gauntlet/17th. I am a staff member to DSB.

I haven't left I guess. I'm kind of just drop by once in a while in DSB, but i participate in the forums more often there.

Although I have to agree with some of you about the e-politics. I've noticed a lot of bs in my zone, but I won't say.

Also everyone just ages and gets on with their life which makes it busier as I am starting a new life with my fiancee.

It's not like I don't like SS anymore I try to play although I haven't logged on in a long time(If I did log on it was probably by accident). I agree the tactics in ss have become dry and boring. People do the same crap everyday. Although I do hope dsb does change a bit I might actually try to play league this year again. Competition has also gone down the drain where only the best player join the best squads. It's getting to the point where I am about to throw it in officially.

There are players out there, but the vets at this point are getting to tired to train and start new squads at least in DSB. Although there is a resurgence of new squads with beginner players. There's about 2-3 new squads for beginner players, but the league before there was only 1 and I was on that squad.

Last league was probably the worst season I've ever played(not statistically), but the attitude towards my squad was ridiculous. I played 10 out of the 14 or so games. I quit as my captain who was sort of a vet used the wrong name registered(the names were similar except the one registered had "TIE>" in front of the name...it's pretty hard to deal with 10 new players before a match and we play 12vs12). The league made us forfeit the game AFTER we finished the game(during halftime he noticed he was on wrong nick he switched back to his name and his ip was checked to be the same person) and we got -3 points off our score. Our score was +1 and ended up being -2 after the game(being +1 was a big deal to me, you do not get negative points for losing). After I argued with higher up staff members that it wouldn't change our position in league(last place) and the squad that beat us would still get their point either way.

My argument was that the bot and ref checks names, but for some reason let him play. Anywho after this incident I kind of got discouraged in playing ss.

Although I must say DSB has made some changes to it's staff and also to it's approach in getting new squads to play. I might try again this year in the 12 vs 12 league.

Sorry for the long rambling.

What I see the most is that people have moved on, but what I also see are small communities that have developed because of a prior interest in this game, which is good to see.

Well. the appeal of this game for me is that even though it can be rather "simple" at times, it still takes strategy and skill to be truely good at it (at-least in DSB, since thats all I can speak on). There really isn't another game that I play on a regular basis that strips the game play right down to pure player skill and a 1 on 1 (or more often 1 on 2 or more) test of ability. When you get right down to it, there's very little someone can do (aside from cheat) that can allow them to regularlly best a more skilled opponent.

Anyone who knows me from DSB knows that I thrive on 1 on 1 and 1 on 3 or more because I LOVE the challenge and thrill in defeating my opponents. I can't get that in many other games. The fact that I also pick one of the slowest and, by some people's view, worst ships to use in a dogfight, only adds to the thrill and ultimate joy in victory.

PS. And there's the added respect (and many times anger) that I get for actually taking the time to learn and then play the shark, and sticking with it almost 100% of the time.

I quit around the same time NBVegita did. I resigned my Sysop position in 17th Parallel after developing for it for about 6 years. I just started loosing interest in the zone and the game as a whole. More and more Games started becoming 3-Dimensional so I started developing more in the 3D realm to keep pace with the industry.

I started playing more MG for awhile but they started having more speccers than players. Didn't really care much for the other zones. Hyperspace was fun, but never really took off for me. I played on Xbox Live so it kept me entertained and away from SS

To point something out to the players who are mad that tactics got the same,

SSCE Hyperspace uses many diffrent items that you can purchase with money you make from killing other players, allowing for multiple tactics and movements from diffrent builds and set-ups.

Just saying.
