Following Polix's lead, I was wondering what or why the people who have stopped playing...well, stopped playing. I'm looking for in depth answers here, not just, "It wasn't fun" or "I moved on". Why wasn't the game fun anymore? What grabbed your attention and made you "move on" from the game? Why'd you stop playing? Real answers folks.

Also, would you ever come back? What would it take for you to come play again? Again, in depth answers.

//Just curious

When I did leave, it wasn't really anything to do with a conscious decision to stop playing... There was no "it's not fun" or anything, I just kind of gradually moved away from it as other things took my time, so the time I spent on continuum kinda just got less and less... When I reformatted, I just didn't install continuum, which I think happens to alot of people.

When I did start playing again, all the old thrill and enjoyment was their, which meant once I tried it once, I was instantly hooked again - It was just a case of a little reminder that continuum still exists, which sparked me into downloading it again

@ syrus 17th,

I quit for awhile after 17th died. It wasn't, like stated, that I had moved on or just grew bored. It just didn't make sense to pick up and go to a new zone.

I came back about 3 years ago and started playing Hyperspace, which is now my favorite and choice zone. I'm guessing that if Hs dies, I'll be gone from Continuum for the next couple of years or so. No sense going to a zone that i wont even like.

Well I staffed in the 17th for...6 years? Somewhere in that range. Somewhere around 05-06 I retired my sysop position because I simply did not have time in my life with work, family and my now fiance. After staffing in a zone for that long it was hard to be just a regular player, plus with how busy I was I simply stopped playing continuum.

Shortly after that the 17th, which was already on pace to do so because of complex, fully collapsed after having what 4 different Hsysops in a year? From there it's kinda hard to get back into the game because I helped build the 17th. I used to spend hours with Dire Wolf recruiting new population and all that. As stated with Luco I don't really find a lot of zones entertaining like I did the 17th. I can play TW, DSB, MG, ect. for a little while but then I just lose interest.

SS is all about the community and the wonderful community, with all of the characters, that 17th had is either no longer there or scattered all over. Back when I started I could dedicate 8+ hours a day if I wasn't going out ect. to playing ss. That left plenty of time for hosting, dev, coding, staffing and playing. Now I'll stop in every now and then to say hi to some peeps I still know but the only realistic way I can see me spending anytime back on SS is if the 17th made a miraculous comeback.

family and my now fiance.

Congrats. I have one of them too!

There are quite a few players that feel the same way about 17th. I don't have much spare time anymore. Alot of us have had to grow up, get jobs and been busy with families and stuff.

RS died, I tried to play EG, but its lame. DS is lame and full of abusers, tried to go to chaos, but i sucked in there. There werent any zones I was into anymore, all the good ones were dead/turned lame. I do log in every once in a while, and im trying to help psyops with alpha, since i love alpha, and id come back and play if it were full of people.

Stopped playing recently mainly due to new computer and then decided to play new/old games that I missed and that I decide school is more important.

Also, things in 1 zone got repetitive. You could say I can go to another zone and try something different. But the problem is, its not fun to start/return to another zone if your doing it alone.

Like NBVegita said, SS is all about community, I think its kinda like a ripple effect. If 1-2 people start leaving others will too cause the people they know slowly stopped playing due to external factors.

I think the major problem with people leaving the game is that developers can't keep up developing new or altering old stuff fast enough before players gets bored. That and real life is more important.

I haven't stopped playing but have a lot less time then I used to.

When I started with this game I was an A level student with loads of free time.

Next I was at university which reduced my game time a bit, but still left me hour per day to spend on continuum.

Now I am a Ph.D student (read in a full time and a bit job), married and spend most of my time working. The free time I have is then split up between my wife, the massive increase in the time I dedicate to cycling, just not being in front of a computer for a while and various chores that have to be done when I have the chance.

None the less I still manage an hour or two minimum a day, but its a long way from the several hours I used to have to dedicate to the game.

The short answer I guess is real life...

It's really quite hard to put my finger on what it is that attracted me to this game in my earlier years. To be quite honest, I was always busy, sports, school, friends etcetera. So that really isn't an excuse I can use. Mostly it's a general lack of interest in video gaming. Or as some have said before, most of my favored zones are long gone and all the people in Continuum that I would call friends are long gone. Most of my chats are empty, my squad is virtually dead. I have just as little time as I did back in the day for this game, possibly more so, which can also be attributed as to why my appearances in game are so few and far between. Fortunately for me, in my field(construction), I'm seasonal. So I, for the most part, have loads of free time on my hands in the winter. But generally I don't have the urge to play Subspace in my free time. The appeal of video games has worn thin for me. But I do have my gaming binges from time to time.

Continuum has died. That is why I don't play much anymore. There is no people on...and the only people that are on are idiot newbs who have a gay macro after killing you, which makes NEW newbs leave.

If we got the pop back up, I would play again.

I used to play a lot. Too much actually. So much that I used to spend my weekends at the office, because the office network had practically no lag. It wasn't unusual for me to spend over mega_shok.gif hours per week at the office just because of playing the game... adding to that the other Subspace related stuff I found myself increasingly involved in, soon there was no time for anything else.

Fortunately a girl dragged me out of that pit, literally, sometime in 1999 if my memory serves me correctly. It didn't take me long to realise that my life needed more than just an online community. Even though things between me and her didn't work out, I had learned my lesson. I started practising yoga and tai chi, one day found myself at a local pool hall, and all in all felt much better about myself. I rediscovered writing music, got some of it published, then found a new girl... things like that. I'm again dating a wonderful girl, I actively teach and compete in pool these days, and overall I'm a much, much happier person than I have ever been before.

Subspace had its place in my life for several years; I played and actively worked for it since late 1996 to maybe 2001. It was good fun, but it dominated my life, so it had to go. I bet I could still kick your ass in a good SVS duel though, TestTube, my old Exiled squadmate and former Seeker of Truth - a good T R I ally you guys were! -salute-

I still sometimes wonder what the Subspace scene is like these days... maybe one of these days when I don't have anything to do I'll download Continuum again and check if my old account still works. For old times sake.

I quit this shit because of the ridiculous amount of drama and/or retarded e-politics involved in every single aspect of this game and its community. People who take the internet (and, consequently, this game) as seriously as most of you faggots do ruin this shit for the rest of us.

That's exactly the same reason why I quit this game. As previously said before, Continuum is a community. The only problem is, when the ONLINE community takes the game too seriously and somehow manages to drag e-politics and drama into it. I originally joined the game to be able to escape reality (and the drama that came with that) whenever I wanted. But after years of playing, I began to become aware and even involved in the drama. My home zone was Halo, and over the span of a few years with the problems of the owners and server hosts, the game simply just lost its fun.

Also, when Halo went through possibly 6 owners and 2-3 servers (I don't remember the numbers anymore) over a period of maybe 2 years, people began to stop playing the zone for numerous reasons: 1) Too much drama. 2) Got annoyed at having to download the zone repeated times as a result of the server change. 3) During all the drama, the zone was sometimes down for days. Once again, the community was a factor. When people stopped playing, my e-friends also stopped playing. In the later years of my "career," I did not play the game, simply sat in spec and talked with people. When those people left, combined with the e-politics and drama, I decided it was time to go.

It's hard to stay interested in a game when every single zone dies.

I've only known about the game for 5 years, and during that time, I've seen Omega Fire, Battlefield, Anything Goes, Halo, Desert Storm, RedStar, Mystic Kingdom, Paintball (multiple versions! blum.gif ), Alpha, several SWZ zones, 17th, Metal Gear, DSB, and even TW either die outright or else drop to a fraction of their previous population. Not saying some of those zones were the best ones out there, but they did all hold populations of anywhere from 20-100 in the past, and now it's like they never even existed.

Now, am I addressing the meta-issues (e-politics, growing up, loss of the gods - Plat, SVS, kewl, GS, Priit, Mr. Ekted, Hoch, MTN, etc)? No. But when you come right down to it, there is no fucking reason to play this game anymore - because it doesn't even exist the way it used to. I'm starting to understand what it feels like to go home after a war and have half the population of your town gone - it just makes you want to get out and stay out. And Cont's even worse than real life, because even the 50% of people left are generally on a few hours a week at most, which makes it hard as hell to talk to them, let alone play a game together.

Also, what's wrong with using a tube sock? It's cleaner than going without, and cheaper than condoms.
