PoLiX Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 After many years, I finally have a reliable strong team that has stepped up and is willing to help out. I kind of hoped that would come of my "What is with this community?" thread. As you all always know, my threads have meaning/reasoning behind them beyond what I post. Subspace Online will replace SSCentral.com as the main portal site. It will be very dynamic, with lots of updates and information. A LOT of the content is already done, and waiting for a design that can be dynamically updated and changed as needed. We will also reek benefit for new players by having a domain that is easily rememberable, and well known. SSCentral.com, after I quit admining, went into a state of static content, or dynamic content just populated from the forum activity. So really, the site was almost useless. Granted the team in charge was busy and had little time for it, but it really killed the site as a common site to visit daily. Toss on the issues I had getting design updates on the recent design, and the fact I hated having a half ass site loaded up, the site seemed mostly dead. So with a fresh start, a new administration, and content ready to go, we are going to put a lot of effort into this site. We want to make it a portal like every other game has, and like this game deserves. I'm not going to hype it up much beyond that, due to the fact I will only have weekends to work on it, but Larry has already made a lot of progress on his part, and Cre is just biting at my ankles to get it going. IP.Converge will allow us to make 1 universal login between SSF and the site without having to do much custom coding or modifications on either site. And just as a bit of justification to my 2.5yrs of debating this. I asked the most disconnected players in our community (TW newbies) if they ever been to SSCentral, and none had even ever heard of it. I then asked if they ever been to SSForum and they had been or had atleast heard of it, or knew it was the tech support forum. So realy, I decided SSForum needs to stay as is, but it is fair to try a new path on the ss website, and SSCentral served its time long beyond all the others. Though it will still be used for subdomains and a redirect as it has been known for hosting sites for ages now. I'd like to hear opinions, good or bad on this, as it was decided amongst many the name SUBSPACE or CONTINUUM should be in the portal website, and Subspace.us just didn't cut it for being a "Meet players from all over the world... then kill them" type of game.
L.C. Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Continuum sucks -- it's a client, not a game.Subspace is the game; name the portal after the game, not the client. After all, it is about the game, isn't it?
larrythehamster Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Preview of what I've been working on: Click Here This is just one concept and may or may not be brought foreward and developed further/used.
»1587200 Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Looks good. I'd change the font on the navigation menu though, that one just looks bleh. And also remove the starfield in the nav menu. Looks though.
L.C. Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 That looks very good. What would it look like though if you had that purple up at the top fade to a starry/nebula-like atmosphere (maybe it doesn't have to have the nebula, but at least the stars?? How would it look?).
tcsoccerman Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 If you decide to take advantage of drupal, i can help with the learning curve.
PoLiX Posted March 24, 2009 Author Report Posted March 24, 2009 Might use CMSMadeSimple again. Was debating Joomla, but bleh. Drupal I've never seen on a running site. Link me? Also, design looks way beyond what I expected right now. GJ Larry.
tcsoccerman Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 http://lmgtfy.com/?q=top+sites+running+drupal gave me this: http://sixrevisions.com/web_design/31-drup...ent-system-cms/
larrythehamster Posted March 24, 2009 Report Posted March 24, 2009 Cheers guys. PoliX: Can you PM me with comments on the design, any suggestions with where to move on in your eyes etc... <3
RiiStar Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Larry you sneaky hamster... Im out to head hunt you for TW stuff when you have time ^^
PoLiX Posted March 25, 2009 Author Report Posted March 25, 2009 [19:57] ALEX: Oooo, I like You've got me and Ghost's approval on the design honestly. Until I start actually scripting, adding content, etc. I won't really know if there is something limiting/annoying on it. But the overall layout is exactly what I asked for. The design is different colors wise than what I asked for, but you made it work, and it looks so well I'd hate to have it changed. I like it honestly. The star background in the menu is cliche of newb websites, but I hate how it scares everyone away from doing that just cause of it. I like how it fits in with the theme on this one. A SubSpace website. My opinion right now.
»Swift Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Good layout, it doesn't detract from the theme of what you want it to be proposed for. Take the critics words for what they are...words. Don't do anything you feel may be unnecessary or limiting the worth of the viewers pleasure or content. Keep it as is by your end-stated design. Speaking as an acquaintaince and not as a critic. Keep up the good word and Scott, I get back on the 6th were gonna hang out mang. I'm taking two weeks of leave off. I'll even drive up to Bremerton to visit your skanky ass if need be. Peace -Joe (Swift)
Cancer+ Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 I like it. Of course, I have always like Larry's work.
larrythehamster Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 Cheers guys The design's now been past over to PoliX for the next stage of the development
Diwa Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 It's funny, I was thinking, recently, how hard it would be for somebody new to find information on subspace, without having to navigate through a bunch of different websites. Sure, you can go to GetContinuum... but even I find it hard to get to where I want to from there. I don't know if there is a "hub" website like there used to be when Subspace.net and SubspaceHQ.com were around where I cant get a majority of my news from. When I came back to this game after a couple years (or more ) off, I was confused as to where I would download the client and actually get back to playing. As nice as the website layout and design is (and it is pretty my hat goes off to larrythehamster), I'm more excited about the prospect of a centralized website where I can get most, if not all, of my subspace news and not have to navigate through a hand-full of websites. As for the name... I wonder if it would be possible to acquire SubspaceHQ.com and set up base there...? I doubt it though.... Nevermind, SubspaceHQ.com = $3995. Forget that! No matter what the name, it'll be my first stop for Subspace related news. Seriously, guys.... I can't wait
»Lynx Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 Maybe we should use Slashdot's system for news stories? -L
L.C. Posted April 11, 2009 Report Posted April 11, 2009 (edited) Maybe we should use Slashdot's system for news stories? -L That's http://www.slashcode.com/ btw.Totally agree. You could use the Edit button, by the way. Edited April 11, 2009 by L.C.
