They had his body do it limp, and made him look calm and untense, kind of a setup for another movie really. A huge amount of fatal crashes can be survived if the person was unconcious or limp during impact. This is why a lot of drunk drivers survive the wrecks that kills the person they hit. They don't tense up upon impact, which causes muscles and bones to be stiff in place causing more injury.

 

Not saying that he should have survived, just saying it is possible.
