German student accused of throwing shoe at Wen Jiabao released on bail in the UK.

This is how a real democracy works. Quick, fair, transparent, bail treatment commensurate with the scope and nature of the offense, and, fascinatingly enough, no torture of the accused.

Obviously we can't expect perfection out of Iraq - there are less than two dozen countries in the world with justice systems like the UK's. But it's still interesting to contrast all the individual parts of the process, to keep some perspective when copycat pundits start ragging on about how much Iraq has improved. I'd be shocked to see Iraq end up resembling even Turkey, and that's assuming Iran doesn't gain complete control of the political system.

You're right there aren't many democratic justice systems like the UK where they can hold you for up to two weeks in jail with no reason (Under the terrorism act of 2000).

Talk about intentionally missing the point of the article. And besides, laws like that have been protested against constantly in the UK, with some effect. Another thing that we aren't seeing much of in Iraq.

That is true, I do believe back in 06' it was 45 days you could be held in the UK under suspicion of terrorism.

Part of the problem we have with Iraq, as will all of the middle east, is that their religion plays a large impact in their laws. With their customs foreign to us, they don't always fall into our concept of justice.
