deadonarrival Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) I think this is probably a firewall issue, but being behind a university hardware firewall I'm hoping it isn't. Essentially a few zones (Hyperspace, DSB are the two I can remember) don't work. They hang for a while then show the attached error. Also, downloading new zones list doesn't work... Anything I can do, or just something to be put up with? Edit: Wrong attachment Edited February 4, 2009 by deadonarrival
Dav Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 does the zone list download OK when you update or does that also give an error?
Resol Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 (edited) I noticed a a few others having problems download a new zone list. I think some Directory Servers are down atm? sscentral.sscuservers.net sscentral.trenchwars.org Snrrrub's still works, add auto.subdir.org Working Server Directories as of 2-2-2009 Edited February 4, 2009 by Resol
Hakaku Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 A lot of the directory servers have gone back up recently (including sscentral.sscuservers.net), but make sure that your list is up to date. If you still can't download a new list, then your school's firewall is probably blocking it, and your best solution is to add zones manually using their Port numbers and IP addresses, which you can find at http://stats.trenchwars.org
deadonarrival Posted February 5, 2009 Author Report Posted February 5, 2009 (edited) I'll try adding some: but the zones list is only half the problem. The main problem is the attached screenshot to the first post: I can see a zone being online, but when I connect I get a hang, then that message. This happens even after wiping the entire zone list and adding again. Is that something to do with a port being blocked? 5005 and 3600 are the two in question, although I haven't thoroughly checked. rootbear75 Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 Uni's firewalls are usually all-exclusive except for the ports they unblock manually. And you need 2 more ports for it to work. you need Zone Port (that's listed) and Zone Port +1
deadonarrival Posted February 7, 2009 Author Report Posted February 7, 2009 Ours is very un-restricted. They're running a trial this year where you can run literally almost anything, they just refuse to support anything other than windows+mac PCs, and have told us that if the police come calling they'll tell them who was downloading. Torrents, games, XBOX live/ps3/wii, skype, apache servers (although not allowed, do work)... I've yet to find anything that won't work so far. The problem for CTM is that it uses different ports for each zone, so I guess a couple must just catch the few ranges that are blocked. Some are reserved for internal useage such as email etc. 100/60 (down/up) Mbit/sec connection, lots of fun :-)
PoLiX Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 XBox uses 3 3000 range ports, so doubt they blocked anything high port wise. Though they may have just opened up 3073-3075 for it... But I bet it wouldn't hurt to go ask them about it.
deadonarrival Posted February 8, 2009 Author Report Posted February 8, 2009 I think I'll have to. I'll go whinge at ISS, tell them I need it for some project or other. Fortunately it's only Hyperspace and DSB that I play at all that I can't access. My most used zones are all fine :-)
Guest proactive Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 well... i am as well having the same problem.... sscu the 17th division works, but not anything else, wont somebody please help?
PoLiX Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 try clicking Zones then download and see if it updates ports and IPs for you.
Guest proactive Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 try clicking Zones then download and see if it updates ports and IPs for you.well, i did this alredy, and it says that there was an error downloading zones, and told me to make sure i was connected to the internet.... wich i was.
Samapico Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Make sure you have a valid directory server selected See the list of active directory servers:http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic=11952
Guest proactive Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 well i tried what u said, and although it was useful information, it still said the same thing , and i will quot what it said exactely :"Failed to connect to server.check to make sure the server is online (it should apear yellow or green in the zone list) and that you are currently connected to the internet. ect" .... annyways, i was wondering if the fact that i am running my internet on wi fi would have something to do with it, conserdering that it's lag conserderably spikes every now and then.... maybee continuum would think that i am not connected, due to the lag? biggest lag spike= 12600
Seriel Killer Posted May 4, 2009 Report Posted May 4, 2009 It's definitely a firewall problem, he is blocking all your "red" zones IPs and ports.
Guest proactive Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 nope got it figured out, my internet was just bad.... lol srry for wasting ur time
