»freakmonger Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 I'm pretty sure I just over looked it somewhere, but has Obama said what he plans to do with the detainee's when he closes Gitmo? I know I saw somewhere about releasing them but has he laidout a plan yet? All I can remember seeing is "close Gitmo, close Gitmo, close Gitmo" but havnt seen a plan for after Gitmo yet. Let me know if I missed it.
Hakaku Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 All I remember is that he wants all of the military trials to cease for the next 120 days so that he & his administration could evaluate how they would deal with the detainees, most likely in civilian courts (allowing them to be represented), and eventually shutting down Guantanamo Bay. In Washington, the administration circulated a draft executive order that calls for closing the detention center within a year and reviewing the cases of all the nearly 245 still held. The government would release some, transfer others and put the rest on trial under terms still to be determined. It was not known when Obama intended to issue the order.
SeVeR Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 I don't know why, but when i read the word "Gitmo" it pisses me off.
Dav Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 i remember a news report here abut the UK agreeing to take on some of the suspects and detain them whilst they get a proper trial.
FMBI Posted January 24, 2009 Report Posted January 24, 2009 According to (I believe) BBC, several European countries are considering taking the prisoners, but they're having a hard time deciding whether to actually do it or not, due to political pressure. I think that would be the best option, though, since that way you can keep them from turning their resentment and insider knowledge of the US system into a real ability to perform terror attacks in the future.
Bak Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 what's wrong with putting them in a US maximum security prison again?
Bak Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 better the large-scale organized attack be done on a jail than on civilians, and I think you're overestimating the possibility of it happening. when has there ever been such a jail break? I also don't think getting into the country is very difficult. is the lock on your front door your best defense against home invasion? do you think it will actually deter someone who's committed to doing one?
»freakmonger Posted January 26, 2009 Author Report Posted January 26, 2009 There was a jail break in Afghanistan. Yes it wasn't in the US, but when has there ever been a large amount of terrorist held in a prison in the US? And I would never say somebody is overestimating the possibilities of a terrorist attack. Underestimating them is what leads to 9/11 all over again. I'm all for closing Gitmo, I'm just not for bringing them here.
Bak Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 Afganistan is in an active war zone comon. We also don't have to put them all in the same jail, so there still won't be a large amount of terrorists in a single prison in the usa. I don't see why we would trust another country's prison securing capabilities more than our own.
