candygirl Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 USS New York It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center . It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft. Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, 'those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,' recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. 'It was a spiritual moment for everyb ody there.' Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the 'hair on my neck stood up.' 'It had a big meaning to it for all of us,' he said. 'They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back.' The ship's motto? 'Never Forget' Quote
Samapico Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I wonder if the enemy will try crashing planes in it to take it down :S Like WWII kamikazes Cool ship though Quote
Dav Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 so what they did is take the remainder of a terrorist attack and use it to make a large middle finger loaded with weapons. If that doesnt say "screw the lot of you!" i don't know what does. Quote

FMBI Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Too bad Afghanistan isn't accessible from the sea.^ Two petty notes I'd like to make here. Number one, that doesn't prevent ships from participating in the war - there's a big controversy in Japan because their navy is helping us with refueling operations on the Indian Ocean. Number two, Afghanistan almost got a coastline in the 19th century, but everyone ultimately decided it was a bad idea to try to take half of modern-day Pakistan away from the Sikhs and Muslims that had been living there for centuries. Dav Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 also the ranges that weapons have on a modern ship probably get around the no coast problem. Quote
rootbear75 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Canada first... then England so what they did is take the remainder of a terrorist attack and use it to make a large middle finger loaded with weapons.
