»D1st0rt Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 So as I was coming out of the Foggy Bottom metro station in DC (visiting my cousin for lunch who goes to George Washington University), there were a bunch of girls with clipboards stopping people "Hi, would you like to take a minute for the environment?" There was a guy about 25 feet away with the same deal. Does anybody else feel like if we spent as much time trying to protect our civil liberties as we do the environment, we wouldn't be in so much of a mess?
FMBI Posted January 14, 2009 Report Posted January 14, 2009 Haven't you read any left-wing books from the early 90s? Environment + civil rights + economic equality are all wrapped up together, if only because environment-destroying corporations + right-wing authoritarians + more corporations are allied against them. Plus, most of the individual people who care about the environment (other than the kids who "grow out of it" and end up hating the movement) are interested in civil rights, it's just that civil rights aren't going anywhere for a while, whereas the environment is kind of a low-hanging fruit. Plus, there's cross-over recruitment, for the reasons already specified. Change a lightbulb, change a world! PS, forgive my rambling, I've been up for 20 hours.
Aceflyer Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 Does anybody else feel like if we spent as much time trying to protect our civil liberties as we do the environment, we wouldn't be in so much of a mess? For sure. Although we do spend a lot of time trying to protect our civil liberties as well. It may just be that environmentalists are sometimes more 'visible' in everyday life. Part of that may be because grass-roots change is essential for environmentalists, but grass-roots protests aren't usually necessary for civil rights issues. But I'm not an expert on any of this, so don't quote me on this.
»Lynx Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 Looking at this from a Government perspective... Environment:If we back the Environmental movement, we can tax everybody some bullshit tax we just made up (for some reason). Civil Liberties:If we ignore these a little, we'll get away with more. -L
»Blocks Posted January 26, 2009 Report Posted January 26, 2009 Screw civil liberties, I'm in California and at the height of the gay marriage hullabaloo, I was thinking it would be great if we devoted as much attention to economic issues as we did to Mr. and Mr. Smith.
