I just finished installing windows 7 (build 7000) and it's running pretty smoothly. It looks a lot like vista, but it's faster and more responsive (even compared to my xp).

(Though, vista also ran better on my computer)

Anyone else installed it ?

Well XP was outbenching Vista on some things, but I guess Windows 7 outbenches them both on almost everything.

Might need to look to see if it is up on my favorite forums yet or not.

he got it on zshare, don't have the specific links with me...

I suggest you use private messages to share these kind of links

and i wrote my own bypass program for zshare too ^^, it's pretty easy to resolve the actual download links from zshare blum.gif

Too bad the actual download component i used sucks ... big time :/

And i don't know if it was my external hdd or the archive but my iso was corrupt, so i had to find a torrent with the exact iso name and let it check and complete the file. Turns out i had 2 parts of 4mb that were corrupt

Too bad the actual download component i used sucks ... big time :/

I can't really say much on the speed vista vs win7, because it's just been installed and all, let's see how well it performs after 3 monhts of daily use and couple of heavy installations later.

5400rpm disk sucks big time though, makes everything slower. I'm waiting for ssd's to become the default drive in notebooks before i buy one, that's for sure (and mine is only 2 years old and it was pretty pricy so that's another reason).

I'm still doubting to use it as my main os though, i'm back on xp at the moment (i installed win7 on a seperate 20gig partition). One thing i noticed is the much bigger improvement in games that use direct x, but i think most likely because of dx10 (I remember it also having a significant boost in vista when i installed it).

Overall it caches more efficiently, uses free resources to crank up the speed, releases those resources whenever something needs it, it makes stuff more responsive and snappy. It reminds me a bit of os x of what i've seen, gui wise, but everyone knows that apple sucks and windows is overall much better ^^

They claim that this can run on a 512MB Atom processor, if this is true (which I doubt, because I've never actually seen this running with Aero enabled, and even without Aero enabled looks very resource-hogging with all the eye-candy) then Microsoft have actually done themselves a favour - if not, then this is just Vista SP3.

I've used this OS, and the only better things I've seen are:

  • A more configurable UAC
  • Less bloat
  • Has Spotlight (The thing they have on Mac) except with this you hit the Windows key, and you get the application in the first few keystrokes
  • Has Mac-like dock for applications
  • Has a Mac-like way of exploring the files...

As for it being 'snappier' or whatever, I never saw *any improvements over XP, especially when you configure XP properly. Also, if you read some unbiased reviews (no, not ZDNet, because they're about as reliable as a fucking water-balloon) you'll notice there aren't actually any huge improvements benchmark wise either. As far as I can see it, Microsoft have missed the boat completely on what an OS is supposed to do, and have instead impressed the majority of the market (like they always have) and created another OS which is pretty, glossy and fun to play with. And it doesn't even stop there. Win7 is just another load of bullshit that's been thrown out of the Microsoft propaganda machine, Vista was several years delayed and you think they just poped out Win7 in 18 months. Rooight.

But don't get me wrong here, if I were to ever (stupidly) go back to a Microsoft distro, I'd probably go Win7, but I'm arguing here that in all of these years, what exactly has Microsoft achieved OS wise compared to Solaris, *nix, OSX? How has market share fluctuated? Then of course you've got to look at how well Win7 will do from a business point of view. Here are a few axioms you've got to remember:

1. Consumers don't put a new OS on Wintel platforms, they buy a new system.

2. Businesses don't spend money without some sort of justification.

3. Moore's Law is now adding more cores and threads, not more mippage on a single task.

4. Disks, RAM and other drivers of new equipment purchase are pretty much ``as much as you want for as little as you want''.

5. Netbooks and small laptops are the current hot items.

6. XBoxes and the like are providing gamers with an alternative to PCs

7. The economy has tanked since Vista shipped.

With all that in the basket, and there being much more support for open source and online applications such as what Google provides, then why are people going to be so eager to change to Win7? If they couldn't get the market to migrate to Vista unless they force them to via 'downgrades' when purchasing computers, what's the bloody point?

Then there's my own opinion, and why I'll never go for anything running Microsofts kern again. Bitrot. And yes, Win7 will still suffer it - so your system may be great at first, but let's see how well it runs after a few months of use.

Windows 7 is previous to Vista and has had even more time spent on it than Vista (which began dev even before XP was released). Then they took some of the features planned for Windows 7 and built them into Vista. I never really heard much about Vista pre-releasing except when it was codenamed "Longhorn", but I have heard lots about Windows 7 from a friend who got into MS. They've been taking lots of feedback from Vista into Windows 7, and improving on what they had before even. The GUI has changed something like 20x, and I guess Ballmer wanted it to have the same feel as Vista upon release, so you get a lot of the current Vista crap in there. His company, so goes his way sadly.

I've switched between *nix and Windows for a while now, but a Vista built laptop w/ XP on it has been my fav so far. Though I will give Windows 7 a good thurough play once it is released.

looks good, I may delay getting a new PC until win 7 is out there now and just skip vista all together.

Anyway has anyone tried continuum on windows 7 yet?

Installed it a while back, I love it. The look is really nice. It's really stable for a beta surprisingly, but it's still got compatibility issues with a lot of older games.
