the real issue is that the 10-15 year old kids who are the next gen of hardcore gamers wont even go near a game that doesnt use the latests 3D graphics and has a population of less then 1 million.

The generation of gamers that gave this game its population are now old enough to have real life to deal with and little time for this anymore.

Thats not to say its all over, its just the more conventional methods used by bigger games with much better funding will not work.

The question is what do these kids do? They will surf the internet and play a game for a quick laugh, or a game reccomended by a fiend.

This means that to get new blood we need to continue devolpment to add something fresh to the game and draw back the old crowd, and secondly we need to place the game in channels that people will just click on for ASSS and giggles and reel them in that way. Things like digg or other user-generated content sites are a perfect method. Unfortunatly without any big updates to the game these communities will not take any interest...

Candy and I can start the repopulation process.

am i the only one who got that joke?

seems like you all just passed over it.

I did. And I even laughed harder when some dude replied to that talking about the zone or something

Well, alot of us use to use our ds98 e-mails for a lot of stuff. So really if it was a subspace involved domain, but maybe not directly related, might work.

Dunno.

Point.

Still, that was years ago. Email's changed since then, it is ridiculously easy these days to get great free email addresses with lots of bells 'n' whistles and most people who use the Internet have more email addresses than they can keep track of these days. And times have changed too; whereas in a 'bygone era' it might have been cool to show off, say, an @mervbot.com email address to one's IRL friends and colleagues... these days, not so much...

Like 99% of these ideas are just repeated thoughts. I think most people in this community are well aware of all the possible ways if not most ways of advertising the game. The excuse that I see this community pull out of its !@#$%^&* is that, "oh no! if we get too many people, SSC will crash!"

I think that's a bullsh*t excuse, but whatever. One person can't make a difference.

If this offends anyone, the offense wasn't intended. ;o

smile.gif Just my two cents.

Whenever has anybody credible ever said anything like that?

Anyway guys, let me give some constructive advice here... Wait until November 7th, and play gears of war two, because it looks like the dogs bollocks.

I would add in some personal comments' date=' but ethical guidelines prohibit me from doing so. :)

Definitely massive ad-campaign and whatnots, but let's hope it doesn't fail like previous attempts.

http://www.ssforum.net/index.php?showtopic...inuum+advertise, PoLiX

Onto the subject of doing this period. It'd be a very bad idea to bring attention to us in this big way again. Yes, it would be nice to get population back, but we are going to have to find other means beyond going BIG on 1 site. Just advertise over tons of little sites, and let people know. If we go big, and whoever owns Subspace notices us, and wants to maybe take advantage of our new found player base/fame, than we might just end up !@#$%^&* !@#$%^&*ing ourselves more than helping.

I doubt it - why didn't the servers get ddoss'ed when continuum went online on download.com ?

What is this talk of DDoSing? I'm pretty sure I remember this from the early 00s when the community was getting an overwhelming number of active players. But then PoLiX replies...

PoLiX

umm, cause we never had a big influx from that really.

I know you've stated you we're never around than, but in Late 2000-Early 2001, most of SSCX spent hrs in spec. The server wasn't ready for the huge influx of players it took. EG alone went from 60-250avg peak in only a matter of months. Subspace was premiered on ZDTV and it was a HUGE killer to the servers, and they were not prepared for it.

So we could honestly experience the same issues if we weren't ready.

Maverick responds...

Maverick

This isn't such a good idea at all (if it would kill most servers)

In the same thread, why did I say the following soon after?

L.C.

If the problem is around that the biller cannot handle that many players - fine. I can't think of anything. I guess we'll need more networks.

If it's about zones vs the server they are hosted on, it may require some expanding and spreading across multiple servers. After all, it would cost money. More players means more cash traffic. We don't exactly know how much traffic we'd get from Steam though.

sil

A couple have said that computers are a lot more powerful since then.

That may be so, but do any of us right now really know the capabilities

of the servers atm? Or that capabilities of the subgame and subbill and

what not when it comes to a truely large number?

If the people in control of said objects are not prepared for an influx,

then it could be quite disastrous to the game and the reputation of the

game as well. If all the zones suddenly crashed, people would not be

very impressed.

However, this is all a moot point if the game and servers can handle it.

By the way, as of some recent months Snrrrub and I have done some extensive playing around with the Peering feature of Subgame. Snrrrub has just recently also told me that he was able to get the peering feature to work successfully on SSC zones AND non-SSC (I'm pretty sure he said for non-SSC too, anyway).

I do not find any of the community's excuses legitimate for not trying to get Continuum/Subspace into Steam and the likes. Nothing has to be bridged over to Steam you know; TrackMania Nations Forever for example isn't bridged, and after downloading the game through Steam you don't even need Steam to run and play the game either.

Your post make it seem as if many people said 'OMG SSC WILL CRASH IF TOO MANY PEOPLE', when in fact it's just the discussion leading to 'It happened before, just make sure that the servers (not SSC) are ready)'

As for Steam and whatever, I think we need to have some kind of control over the client to do anything like that in the first place. And as it is, only Priitk has control over the client.

Then we should bug PriitK to do that.

Otherwise it should be a community effort to persuade Valve into plopping Continuum into their listing at the minimum.

Getting Priit to do anything has become a lost cause.

Getting the source from priit, impossible.

Getting Valve to do anything to help a game's community that doesn't profit them, or puts them at any chance... you have higher odds of walking on water.

Honestly, Continuum has lost its nistolgia (sp?), and is having a midlife crisis of the worst kind. You know, those ladies who get new tatoos, wear young girls clothes, and try to act hip and cool ... yeah, that's us now. We try slapping on better graphics, and hyping ourselves up as something better than we are anymore.

Some people like old women with tatoos and lots of percing, they're probably some of the same wierdos that still play this game too.

Quite frankly I have to disagree with you 100% on this because you are incorrect. Continuum is not a loss nor gain to Valve, and they won't care to put it up. Even it it's just a link to the community.

TrackMania for example, is a totally free and independent game from Valve and Steam, even though it is offered through Steam. Where do you think Valve gets a gain from that? Nowhere. I've played the game and checked it out, and I see nothing in the game (including master servers) that have anything to do with Valve or Steam.

On top of that, there are several other games on Steam that don't benefit Valve either.

I must say, quite naive to throw down the push to get Continuum onto Steam.

EDIT :: But of course, I'm always wrong and everything, that is, because I disagree with the mainstream opinion in this community (which doesn't necessarily mean the community is right either). If you don't want to do anything about it -- fine -- but then don't complain that the game is dying because you never dared to venture into the unknown and impossible. There has never been a community push for it; how would YOU know what Valve has to say?

No reply is needed for this, because I'm pretty sure I know what kind of comments I would receive on this anyway. I support any and every effort in promoting and moving Continuum forward. However it disgusts me that people would reject ideas because they are too afraid or naive to try (sorry, no offense intended), or simply and honestly don't care (whether they admit it or not). Unless the community makes a move, nobody will ever know.

This came up before. Another community member (i'm sure it was posted on this forum) contacted steam to place Conitnuum on the list.

Valve asked for the creators of continuum to contact them for further negotiations on that process.

And as the most experience will know, that goes to a dead end on so many levels.

It is an ideal idea for low cost, if it only wasn't for the above.

Shouldn't be hard. Just get in touch with BDE and have them contact Steam, if they're interested.

As the old saying goes, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

We put them at chance with the fact we're using a stolen server software, and made a clone of an original game/client. Didn't say both applied to us. TrackMania gave them no profit, but it also didn't have any effects on them.

You think you're the 1st one to ever think of this or contact valve? This has been discussed, attempted, and talked about many times. Always the same answer from them, always the same outcome for us.

Another thing, Valve seems to cause Continuum to crash / vice versa when loading. You can now tell Steam to load any game, and it seems to have to do with the way Continuum is unpacked (according to the ones who we're playing with it, have yet to try it myself). So if we get valve to add us, think they'll spend the time releasing an update just for us? Yes, maybe included with other updates, but they'll more than likely make us do something about it or attempt it 1st, which we cannot.

The only reason I knock this down is the fact it is pointless to waste time on something so many others with more pull and control in this game have tried and with no result.

---------------------------------

Before we even try to save this game, the community needs a major at!@#$%^&*ude change. Half this games players won't even come to SSForum because of the rampaging idiots I spend half my time controlling. And really, I am about to just began IP blocking them from the entire SSDL server. And trust me, that kills a lot of ss related sites for them.

Also there is certain mods who I am about to fire if they don't straighten their !@#$%^&* up... No warnings, you guys know better, and should know who you are.

Case in point, Rootbear's thread I just finished cleaning up, 1 post in there, you'll notice who right away.

I'm getting to the point that working 50+hrs a week, I just don't see just cause in this anymore like I use to. Use to I worked 40+hrs a week, and spent a lot of my free time between shows and friends working on these sites. Probably another 15+hrs a week. But really, if you guys just keep posting crap and flaming and fighting with each other rather then posting !@#$%^&* worth reading, I almost no longer see a point in having SSForum.

Just my 2 cents.
