Guest1017 Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) !@#$%^&*o, Is there anyway to force continuum to use 24 bit color? In the options all I see are 8, 16, and 32. Thanks,Guest1017 Edited October 2, 2008 by Guest1017
Samapico Posted October 2, 2008 Report Posted October 2, 2008 Why would you want that? Do you have problems running it at 32bits? Or even 16 bits... Since it's space, and 90% of your screen is filled with black at all times, I doubt you'll see much difference between 16 and 24 or 32 bitsOn top of that, MOST graphics in Continuum are 256 colors. Actually, all default graphics are, and probably over half the tilesets you see are in 256 colors. And even zones using a lot of custom graphics usually try to use 256 colors to save on the download times, and also because by default, everyone will enter with 256 colors.
Guest1017 Posted October 2, 2008 Author Report Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) I'm running it under ubuntu and linux only supports a high color depth of 24 bit. When running it under wine, if continuum isnt matched with your systems color depth you get very bad fps. So right now, I have to switch my system's color depth down to 16 bit if I wanna play subspace with a decent fps rate. Unfortunately to change your color depth under linux, you have to restart your xserver, which is basically a quick restart of your computer. If I leave my system at 16 bit, some other software I use looks bad. So if theres anyway of forcing 24bit color in continuum, it would help me out. Thanks again,Guest1017 Edited October 2, 2008 by Guest1017
Samapico Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 You could try finding the registry where that setting is put... perhaps you can trick it into using 24bits. Though I have no idea if you can even do that with linux/wine... Other more linux-experienced people might help you with that if needed
Guest1017 Posted October 3, 2008 Author Report Posted October 3, 2008 I did try doing that through wine's registry editor but it didn't seem to help. It appeared to default back to 32 bit when I entered the game, but it would just show a blank space when looking in the graphics options. Although after further researching, apparently 32 bit color and 24 bit color are the exact same thing. So maybe the problem isnt matching the color depth, but not being able to run continuum above 16bit under ubuntu w/ wine at all. (Without a bad fps)
L.C. Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 I highly recommend that everyone runs at 16-bit because you will not see any color gain in Continuum and will have a performance hit. The only place you will EVER, -if at all-, see use of colors greater than 16-bit's is in LVZ, and to be honest, I don't really know of a zone that depends on 32-bit either. I might be wrong -- that is, there may be a couple zones out there, but there is no real advantage of using 32-bit graphics. I have noticed that compared to 16-bit graphics, 32-bit graphics has a terrible and nasty performance hit on machines.
Samapico Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 I'm running it under ubuntu and linux only supports a high color depth of 24 bit. That's why he wants 24bits
L.C. Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 That's why he wants 24bitsWow, I never knew that. D:
aquarius Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 in response to the topic !@#$%^&*le: !@#$%^&* that, the only way i made my old pc run smoothe in ss was to use 8bit u use 32bit k bye
