NOTICE: THIS IS ALL IN A BRAINSTORMED PROCESS, NOTHING IS FINAL. THIS IS A GENERAL OUTLINE OF HOW THINGS WILL BE. IT IS THE BASIC STRUCTURE AND WILL BE EDITED.

Objective:

----------

The objective and goal is to create an SSC Wide "SS Radio" that all players from all zones across the SSC network can connect to. Thus, helping continuum become more centralized/unified/comming more together as a network, more than being seperated.

Support:

--------

All major SSC zone sysops/owners have said that this is a great idea for the SS community and have agreed to participate and help support the idea of an "SS Radio". All current zone radios (EG Radio, TW Radio, etc) will be redirecting listeners to the new "SS Radio" as well.

Protocol:

---------

All zones will be given connection information, which will then be passed down to the zone's choice of DJ's. The DJ's will have a time slot of when they will be hosting radio for their represented zone. Each DJ can represent their zone on air by mildly advertising, hosting events, doing shout outs, taking song request, and just having fun. Its all pretty much about having fun while playing. Stress free, listening to music, and just enjoy yourselves.

Advertising:

------------

Advertising of zones is allowed, as long as it is under control. There is a difference between "MG is current having a big prized event, you should come check it out." and "OMG COME TO TW, ITS THE BEST ZONE EVAR, COME COME COME" after every song. If there are DJs that would like to go zone hopping and give information on all zones, thats fine too. A simple "Im in DS now and theres alot of pop in here, big flag game going on, jackpot is big." and a couple minutes later saying "Just came into EG and staff is giving out free prizes". As long as it is subtle and mild, then its all fine, and actually encouraged to advertise, that is what its all about, spreading the word across the SSC Network's players.

Zone Airing Rotation:

---------------------

A rotation is currently not set up. I will be having discusions with zone owners/sysop/participants about it. When everyone comes to an agreement, it will then be posted and put into effect. I understand there are alot of zones and little time, I will try to work out the best schedule.

Rules:

------

--No obnoxious/m!@#$%^&* advertising (Read the "Advertising Section")

--No har!@#$%^&*ment towards listeners/players (Dont trash talk people or groups of people)

--No obsessive/overboard swearing (Be mature, use common sense)

--No inappropriate sounds/songs on air (No racist/pornographic material)

--Songs must be played (You cant sit there and talk for an hour)

--No racism/racist comments or materials. (Zero tolerance. Period End.)

Moderation:

-------------

The majority of moderation will be the listeners themselves. If there are alot of complaints about a specific DJ, the problem will be talked about and resolved. Also, there will be a few people I might pick just to pop in and listen to check if any rules are being broken. SS Radio site will have a "complains" section. This, as well as everything else, is not final.

Host:

-----

Boba from EG radio has been the decided host for the server. A very big thanks to him.

Website:

----------

SyrusMx has let me know that he has a current radio site that isnt being used. I still have to talk to him about it. I have talked to Polix, and it will be hosted on SScentral.com. If anyone would like to help develop a website, then please contact me.

Participants:

-------------

The following list is a list of people/zones I have talked to, and who will help support SS Radio:

SSCC Star Wars Empire

SSCC Desert Storm

SSCC Metal Gear CTF

SSCE Hyperspace

SSCU Extreme Games

SSCX Chaos/League Zone SVS

SSCE Hockey Zone

SSCU Death Star Battle

SSCU Trench Wars

SSCX PowerBall

T3 The Gauntlet

SSCW Unreal Tournament

SSCI Fusion

Polix (www.sscentral.com)

Ghost Ship (Biller-Wide Advertisements)

Also, all zone owners/sysops have agreed to advertise the SS radio as far as zone websites/forums go, as well as in-game. And I thank all of you again with your support.

Remember, this is all just the first step on setting this idea up. Nothing is yet set in stone. There will be changes and adjustments to certain things. Right now, this is just a heads up for all of you to discuss upon, and to get psyched about!

I support this. It'll take some work to get it setup though, and finding a host will be tough if you haven't got the money for it (this is just some insight/knowledge I'm sharing). Good luck on it. :o

@Cerium do you have any opinions about using WinAMP Shoutcast? Or is there an alternative (by the way, that's the only one I know of for something like this, so forgive me ;_; )? Edited by L.C.

No idea -- I've never done the broadcasting/podcasting thing. I've got some actual dj equipment I've been meaning to setup and use for almost a year now, but I won't have the room until I move into my dorm (which is kinda sad, if you think about it).

i have a spare computer to use for the radio.

Depends on how much Bandwidth you need though. I have Cable atm.

it runs Windows Home right now, but i have an XP Pro CD (somewhere), or I can always put Linux on it.

Well, I planned on using shoutcast, and we would need a server...you figure EG/TW/DSB radio has at least 100 listeners combined, plus all the other zones. Im guessing (not at the start) but eventually it will hit somewhere around 200 listeners? Or am I being optimistic? Im guessing by how many current zone radio listeners there are, plus other zones that currently dont have a radio.

Let me tell you one thing: hosting a radio is something that is very demanding in bandwidth, and will require a dedicated server as well as a lot of money and/or a very good plan that either specializes in Shoutcast or radios, or a plan that provides lots of bandwidth for bandwidth-heavy applications. Also to mention, this is !@#$%^&*uming that you have a 100mbit Full-Duplex uncapped port on the server.

128k Quality is 16 KB/s. (edit: you can max out a 100mbit pipe to 100% by having 800 concurrent listeners on this quality)

100 listeners for 1 second would be 1600 KB/s on the upstream throughput.

1 minute would total up to 96000 KB (93.75 MB).

1 hour would total up to 5760000 KB (5625 MB, 5.49 GB).

12 hours would total up to 69120000 KB (67500 MB, 65.92 GB).

24 hours would total up to 138240000 KB (135000 MB, 131.84 GB).

30 days would total up to 4147200000 KB (4050000 MB, 3955.08 GB, 3.86 TB).

196k Quality is 24 KB/s. (edit: actually it's 24.5 -- my miscalculation; I'm not recalculating all this for that missing .5) (edit: 522 concurrent users to max out 100mbit pipe to almost precisely 100%)

100 listeners for 1 second would be 2400 KB/s on the upstream throughput.

1 minute would total up to 144000 KB (140.625 MB).

1 hour would total up to 8640000 KB (8437.5 MB, 8.24 GB).

12 hours would total up to 103680000 KB (101250 MB, 98.88 GB).

24 hours would total up to 207360000 KB (202500 MB, 197.75 GB).

30 days would total up to 6220800000 KB (6075000 MB, 5932.62 GB, 5.79 TB).

256k Quality is 32 KB/s. (edit: 400 concurrent users to max out 100mbit pipe to precisely 100%)

100 listeners for 1 second would be 3200 KB/s on the upstream throughput.

1 minute would total up to 192000 KB (187.5 MB).

1 hour would total up to 11520000 KB (11250 MB, 10.99 GB).

12 hours would total up to 138240000 KB (135000 MB, 131.84 GB).

24 hours would total up to 276480000 KB (270000 MB, 263.67 GB).

30 days would total up to 8294400000 KB (8100000 MB, 7910.16 GB, 7.72 TB).

On 256k Quality, you would be using up 25% (concurrent) of your 12.5 MB/s (100mbit) pipe.

EDIT :: I did 320k for additional convenience. By the way, all this is a heaven load of bandwidth starting at 128k Quality.

320k Quality is 40 KB/s. (edit: 320 concurrent users to max out 100mbit pipe to precisely 100%)

100 listeners for 1 second would be 4000 KB/s on the upstream throughput.

1 minute would total up to 240000 KB (234.38 MB).

1 hour would total up to 14400000 KB (14062.5 MB, 13.73 GB).

12 hours would total up to 172800000 KB (168750 MB, 164.79 GB).

24 hours would total up to 345600000 KB (337500 MB, 329.59 GB).

30 days would total up to 10368000000 KB (10125000 MB, 9887.70 GB, 9.66 TB).

EDIT2 :: Expect to spend around $100 to $300+ per month depending on how many listeners you are going to limit to listen at once.

EDIT3 :: To totally poop out your 100mbit (12.5 MB) pipe with only 1% of the concurrent throughput remaining...

1013.76k Quality is 126.72 KB/s.

100 listeners for 1 second would be 12672 KB/s on the upstream throughput.

1 minute would total up to 760320 KB (742.5 MB).

1 hour would total up to 45619200 KB (44550 MB, 43.51 GB).

12 hours would total up to 547430400 KB (534600 MB, 522.07 GB).

24 hours would total up to 1094860800 KB (1069200 MB, 1044.14 GB, 1.02 TB).

30 days would total up to 32845824000 KB (32076000 MB, 31324.22 GB, 30.59 TB).

I have no idea where you would find a host that would give you 31 TB of bandwidth per month. You'd have to go Colo/Dedi for that, guaranteed. On top of that, you'd be spending several hundreds per month.

what about lower quality? say like 64 or 96

and you also have to think about time.

you calculations go if the station is on 24/7 with 100 listeners throughout (which i can tell is what your base point was)

Im thinking that the station would be on for what? maybe 3-6 hours per day? (and not even every day at that)

also, while i dont want to say its not going to happen (i hope it does) i doubt that it will get more than 100 listeners at a time (the way the ss population is)

128k would be fine. Take it to 256k based on statistics if they allow.

I hate to be pessimistic but most Continuum players these days either listen to music from their own playlists or from an internet radio. tongue.gif
I'm also sure that most players really don't need subdir.net or subdir.org...or even then, the majority of players needing mervbot.com and sscentral.com (ssforum.net too, but hardly as much).

Come on, this is all out war against extinction. blum.gif

If someone has money, let them spend it as they wish and desire.

EDIT :: Oh, and also combine your/our efforts together as much and however much possible.

Rootbear, cable won't be enough.

Currently the hosting of the SS radio is undetermined. I have a couple of people in mind and a couple of plans, but nothing is set in stone yet. If you would like to be the one to help out and have a spare server/bandwidth lying around, then let me know.

You'll need at least a 100mbit unmetered server, or around 3-5tb worth of dedicated bandwidth. The specs on the server won't have to be too robust as it doesn't take much to run a streaming application. You'll need pretty much php, mysql, apache, and whatever streaming software you choose. Figure at least a Pentium 3ghz w/1gb ram and 80gb hd, but the more CPU & memory, the merrier...if it gets popular. Linux preferred. Shoutcast is the most popular, but Icecast is also a favorite among the streaming radio groupies. I would suggest staying away from LayeredTech, and choosing a central US location for the server, like Texas or Missouri. West coast servers are going to buffer more for east coast residents, and vice versa. I'd suggest Alphared for a provider. Their bandwidth is great, they're in TX, and they've got great staff. Also, they allow IRC, which means their network is ddos protected (plus IRC offers a nice little nitch to get other people to play Continuum).

The method I had lined up before was to get each zone's staff to find their own dj's. They know their players and dj's better than any of us. Also, the zone's would be held accountable for the actions of the dj's. So if some dj from say EG gets on and just plays the Chicken Dance while touting "EG ROCKS! EG ROCKS!" then yeah, EG would be held accountable for that.

Website:

----------

A website is currently needed to be designed. I have talked to Polix, and it will be hosted on SScentral.com. If anyone would like to help develop a website, then please contact me.

I still have the old ssradio site sitting around somewhere. Let me know if you want to use it.

On a final note, I just got a raise, and I've wanted to do this for a while. Last time I tried to put it together it fell through. Apparently there have been some changes in the zones and they're all for doing this now, which is good. I can offer my $$ for a server if need be.

Syrus, that would be -greatly- appreciated. Lemme see what I can do as far as finding a server first. The old ssradio site you have sitting around, will be perfect smile.gif Again, greatly appreciated!

Some more info on TW radio server (run by me)

Its run on a dedicated server (which also hosts a number of zones and websites) with a 10MB connection.

We've never maxed it out. This server costs me $24.95/mo for this server.

We have a policy of 64kps or less, to keep costs down and also as many radio hosts struggle to upload any higher reliablily, espcially those on cable.

Also it allows people on dial-up to tune in, not everyone has super fast connections.

Don't forget about the Euro players, an east coast server is probably the best location.

I would recommend picking up a cheap did server somewhere (range $20-40$) or using a small VPS ($7/mo) only need to run one service. Also i recommend using Icecast as its compatable with Shoutcast and much more stable form my experience. We started with Shoutcast but it kept crashing and got hacked.

64kps is enough for a non-commercial radio in my opinion. If you want high quality music, listen to your own mp3's or to a CD.

if you would like to purchase the machine off my hand's, i'd gladly ship it to you. (looking for 100-200 at most for the whole computer)

I'll post the specs later (if i get time before i leave tomorrow morning)
