Aceflyer Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 At long last... RiiStar and I are proud to release the new MERVBot.com!!! Click HERE to VISIT IT!!! I want to thank RiiStar a ton for all of the work he put into this awesome release; he deserves at least -90% of the credit for what you see at MERVBot.com now. This isn't the end of our MERVBot.com overhaul though; we'll be adding further enhancements to the site in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled! I'll be starting a thread shortly in the General Development board here with information on how to submit plugins or other resources to the site & how to request changes to the site.
Aceflyer Posted August 7, 2008 Author Report Posted August 7, 2008 (edited) As previously noted, Rii deserves at least -90% of the credit for this release. Rii made the design (including all images) and coded and formatted the "Core Package" index page. I made the "Plugins/Addons," "Tutorials/Articles," "MISC Apps," and "Links/Resources" pages based on the "Core Package" index page Rii coded and formatted. In any case, glad you approve of the final product. Edited August 7, 2008 by Aceflyer
»Ceiu Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Hrmm...I don't see the point in giving the site a complete makeover when it didn't really need one (especially given that the most recent addition was back in 2006), but if you're gonna spend the time on it... - The markup needs correcting; there are 44 96 validation errors- Use less static markup and more dynamically generated content (unless you enjoy manually adding new entries).- Aside from the ever-cliche and generic bot=>robot, what does Protoman's !@#$%^&* child have to do with mervbot?

It's just a picture? And it was more interesting than a Plain text heading... PHP is planned to be implemented, Ace just decided to put the layout up.I didn't check the validation since i spent about 30mins on it when i was at work bored... Meh... »Ceiu Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 The problem you've left yourself, though, is you didn't get your template polished before AceZealot put it into use. Now instead of one page, you've got five or six to fix. Adding PHP to the mix is only going to compound these issues if they're not taken care of prior.

Agreed, and those issues will be dealt with in time. Even though we have more work to do now.Ace jumped the gun a bit as you implied, but hey its all good.

Well, the old layout looked pretty bad. I will agree that it didn't really need a makeover, though. Taking the same logic further, though, we don't really need GetContinuum.com, or SSWiki, or any of a variety of other useful sites. - The markup needs correcting; there are 44 96 validation errors True, and these will be addressed. I don't see the fire though; it's not like the site claims to be validated. Honestly, do you put every webpage you view through validation?

I don't believe it needed a makeover, but I didn't say it shouldn't exist. The old site was, in my opinion, perfect for it's content: simple and functional. Quit with the knee-jerk reactions and stop trying to twist my words. - The markup needs correcting; there are 44 96 validation errors True, and these will be addressed. I don't see the fire though; it's not like the site claims to be validated. Honestly, do you put every webpage you view through validation? View? Not necessarily.Develop? Definitely. And being that you're actually working on this site (with your usual degree of self-pride, I see), I'd expect that you'd care about things like compatibility and functionality. If you don't see the "fire" after I clearly pointed out the reason you want to fix these problems up-front, then I highly suggest you step down until Rii has a chance to get the template to a finalized state. As things are moving along now, you're only creating more work which will be harder and more time consuming down the road.

The old site was, in my opinion, perfect for it's content: simple and functional. Quit with the knee-jerk reactions and stop trying to twist my words. Yes it was a knee-jerk reaction. The old site was functional, agreed, but let's face facts: no offense to Catid, but it was really rather ugly. In any case though, what's done is done, so debating whether the makeover was warranted or not is sort of besides the point now. PoLiX Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 I don't believe it needed a makeover, but I didn't say it shouldn't exist. In any case though, what's done is done, so debating whether the makeover was warranted or not is sort of besides the point now. I at one point was going to redesign and re-code the site when it was still at catid.sscentral.com. But then I realized this "ugly" site as you called it, fully served its purpose. He kept it organized, and kept everything on there you needed. No offense, but I know Riistar can design a better site then that. The code is attrocious (sp?) and the entire layout/iframe of the site just makes it look more ugly and annoying than before. That and I can no longer go there and just scroll down with ease. Have to click in the stupid frame to scroll. The design could EASILY be made liquid, and honestly, looking at how he didn't put anything on the left, probably was meant to be. It all almost reminds me of something I've seen people make in a wysiwyg like dreamweaver. Except someone sloppied the code up even worse. Just my 2 cents. Edit: Also, many others contribute to SSCentral, SSForum.net, and SSDownloads.com. SSCentral.com "A Subspace Fan Site" | SSForum.net "Subspace's Central Forum System" | SSDownloads.com "Subspace's Central Downloads Archive". How hard were those captions. I don't take any ownership for SSForum.net outside of these forums (Swift honestly fully owns them, but calls them mine). My team does a lot of work, and earns their ranks as admins respectfully.

Do you have to ruin everything you touch?
»Lynx Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 doesn't work on my iPhone. LOL@everybody hates ace -lynx
RiiStar Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 (edited) Ups for the constructive crit! When i get time i'll redo it...Prolly remove the css framing (its not an iframe, but looking at it now with content as such doesnt work well...) But like i said i did not spend much time on it at all.I was ment to be working - Time is money, money is time... @Ace - Take it on the nose and grow from this... Edited August 8, 2008 by RiiStar
Aceflyer Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 @PoLiX: Thanks for the constructive feedback. We'll definitely look into updating the links' descriptions. @Lynx: Sorry it isn't iPhone compatible. @root: Randomly bashing me isn't going to make you look 'cool', so just give it up. @Rii: Heh yes. Tbh I'm not overly concerned although I am always open to learning from each 'experience'. @All complainers: Yes, many of you have valid points; thanks for bringing them up. RiiStar and I strive to deliver the best product we can; rest !@#$%^&*ured we will be working to address all of your points. In the meantime, please don't be overly critical. Neither Rii nor I are getting paid for this, and one glance at some other major SS sites (which I won't name) should illustrate nicely that while MERVBot.com could be greatly improved, it is at least complete and functional.
rootbear75 Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 @root: Randomly bashing me isn't going to make you look 'cool', so just give it up. you didnt even address the other 90% of my post.
Samapico Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 doesn't work on my iPhone. LOL@everybody hates ace -lynxCan Mervbot run on your iPhone anyway? Don't think so Personally, I think the old site was quite unorganized; the only way to find something was with Ctrl-F or with a little luck when scrolling. Yes it was simple, but I believe categories, a search, and possibly some interface for admins to add stuff would make things easier for everyone.
JDS Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 website looks nice i know nothing about mervbot, but at least i can look at a nice looking page
CRe Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 I agree with Cerium on dynamically generating content and the mark-up. Really what my idea was to keep the original design, maybe change the header, but dynamically update the content. For the mark-up think of it like this, In real life do you go off giving your professors essays with incorrect grammar and spelling? I'm guessing no. So do the site correctly too. Anyways Aceflyer always jumps the gun and screws up later on causing more people to hate him anyway. Nothing new for him. Oh and root shut up.
FMBI Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 When are we going to go 100% Wiki and skip all this !@#$%^&*?
Drake7707 Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 doesn't work on my iPhone. LOL@everybody hates ace -lynxCan Mervbot run on your iPhone anyway? Don't think so Aha!, finally someone who is contributing non-functional sites on iPhone browser to make it useless. Yay for anti-iPhone ploy, now lets extend this to anti-Apple ploy
