Cancer+ Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Just was talking to some people about this and I got curious. Will names/squads ever get reset again? What are the requirements for names getting reset? Is it so many hours? Tied to a squad? No offense, but I would like for a biller/bang op to answer this. Anyone else is just speculation and don't know for a fact.
»Lynx Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Only person I see answering this is either PriitK or maybe Ghost Ship. -Lynx
PoLiX Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Names resetting... Now some ops will do it, if you actually plan to PLAY on the name. IE: you wanted the name Cancer, it was very inactive, probably just collected long ago by someone, and you plan to use it instead of Cancer+. Now I won't name the ops who do this, as I don't know if it is any longer ok or against the rules to do so, but they haven't gotten in trouble yet, and I honestly agree with doing it the way they do. Priit a few years back, to fix issues with A LOT of squads being owned by *UNKNOWN* (squadowner's name reset, but still people on squad), reset them all, and if I remember correctly, he also set it so it does this now from time to time itself. Names reset automatically depending on the amount of usage. Typically a high usage name will take years if ever. One of mine I forgot p!@#$%^&* to (before ?setmail/?lostp!@#$%^&*word/etc.) lasted for almost 4.5yrs. I maybe had 4000hrs on it. Noone besides Priit really knows exactly how the biller decides to reset names, but I will say that many have realized that the resets seem to coincide with scoreresets. Probably since could easily tie in the control to reset scores to go through names at the same time, since it is editing the database anyways.
MikeTheNose Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 As I am the requested guy in Cancer+'s post that's supposed to reply to said post, I fully support what Polix said. (Not only us are in the know)
»Lynx Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I heard that if the name was in a squad - not just owned it, it could not be reset?
Sketter Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I think he was looking for a formula...i know i would like one.
»freakmonger Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 ok back to the formula then..only priitk can answer that with a 100% correct answer (unless somebody gets the answer from him and then posts it lol)
Sketter Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Or maybe we can run our own extensive testing...and create tons of names and with each with their own variables and see how long they take to reset
»Lynx Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Formula could well change depending on various things. Would be a pain in the arse for something so insignificant. -Lynx
rootbear75 Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Or maybe we can run our own extensive testing...and create tons of names and with each with their own variables and see how long they take to reset who has the time and no life to do such a thing
Sketter Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I'm sorry, i thought this was a subspace/continuum forum.
Cancer+ Posted July 10, 2008 Author Report Posted July 10, 2008 As I am the requested guy in Cancer+'s post that's supposed to reply to said post, I fully support what Polix said. (Not only us are in the know) I didn't necessarily mean you or said people in the same position. I just !@#$%^&*umed you guys would know the most considering you are the operators. Thanks for that explanation Polix but I really meant something else. I don't know if I put this clear enough either. What I originally meant was not to have one name reset but many names. What I heard a long time ago was that names and squads were manually reset by the Biller Ops/GS/Priit. I don't mean that one person asks to get a certain name reset but the biller ops themselves took account of so many names and said "they don't seem like they are getting used so we are resetting these" Get what I'm saying?
MikeTheNose Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 In that case the only one who could answer your question is Priit.
PoLiX Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Than the answer is it is an automated system now. That much is pretty clear. With the little time Priit or GS have to spend in this game, and I know Mike would answer this if he did it, it has to all be automated, this much we can determine. Names and Squads use to have to be reset manually, yes. They use to do it like once every so often, then once a year, then it all seemed to just become automated. Except for the squad reset quite a few years back. But that even now seems more automated, as I rarely run into people e-mailing me or pming me about *UNKNOWN* squads anymore like they use to (Own sscentral.com... supposively you own SSC. That and I guess PoLiX and PriitK look a lot alike? I dunno). That or they got smarter... could be one of the 2, and I'm leaning more towards the 1st. Most of the control over this knowledge is no doubt to control name hording/trading. As sad as this art is, it'll never die, so most likely precautions have been taken to control it until such time that either a new name system is ever developed (doubtful) or this game dies anyways.
Cancer+ Posted July 11, 2008 Author Report Posted July 11, 2008 So more than likely, it won't happen again. Thanks for answering my question though.
BlueGoku Posted July 12, 2008 Report Posted July 12, 2008 Names: If you aren't the rightful owner of the name, I won't reset the name for you. Sometimes there are exceptions if, like Polix said, Cancer+ wanted to use the name Cancer as his main alias and it only had like 10 hours of usage and hadn't been used since 2001. Squads: If the squad is unknown and you would like to use it as a league squad, I'll usually reset it for you but then follow up and make sure you are actually using it and not trading it or something. As for the automatic reset formula, it only works on names. It DOES work, but it's not the most accurate way of resetting inactives. I've had an experiment running since 2005 now, a name with only 10 hours of usage but squadjoined to a squad and wearing a banner. I don't think it'll ever reset. The formula takes into account: whether it's joined to a squad or not, # of squads owned, whether it's wearing a banner, usage, logins and when it was last used among other things. As well, squads that are unknown MAY have reset at one point if no one was squadjoined, but this is no longer the case.

BlueGoku Posted July 17, 2008 Report Posted July 17, 2008 I <3 ya Phong, but that's something you'll need to take up with GS directly. I don't like going over people's heads. He's a reasonable guy though so he'll at least listen to your request.
omni Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 Well I talked with kewlair a while back and he gave me the name omni since it has been inactive since 2000. Maybe you could ask him?
