Resol Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 First off, I hope no one thinks I am trying to "spread out" the community, and I realize a lot of people are against more websites. However, I think this is a fairly decent idea. If anyone would like to help out in this project, then feel free to reply here, or send me an email: fstpatillac@yahoo.com If we can get enough people posting news at this site, it should work out just fine. I welcome all zone owners to use my site to post any news that they may feel justified. I would like to see as many people involved as possible. The site just went up friday night, and I have not added too many things. If anyone would like to add links or downloads to the site please feel free. If you notice that a zone's link is not on there, then go ahead and add it. As well, if you have a website, I would much appreciate a link. I was going to add the reviews that I had from another site, but they are very much out to date, maybe this next weekend I will start doing some new reviews for all the current zones. I have a few projects in mind and just need to speak with a few more people, but the site will become usefull if everything falls through. Please comment and enjoy. http://sszone.sshq.net/
»CypherJF Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Talk to smong; he generates a RSS mesh of subspace related news. http://toktok.sscentral.com/ssnews.php
ThunderJam Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 1) Ugly2) I thought we had something that was doing this already... a subspace news site... that a couple ppl from different zones were contributing to..
Hakaku Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 ^Nope, the SubSpace news website went offline a long time ago, because the owner failed to maintain and promote it, so those who were contributing (aka only Smong) gave up. My opinion is that the theme colours make it hard to read, otherwise I like it. Although you should definitely consider adding some more content into it.

My opinion is that the theme colours make it hard to read, otherwise I like it. Although you should definitely consider adding some more content into it. Like I said, its very new, I just started working on it Saturday. By the end of the week I should have it filled with up to date content. If anyone wants to help in the project, like adding downloads and links, please go for it. Also, I have been going ahead and talking to staff members in various zones, and they seem to be quite happy to lend a hand when they have the time. I was thining, even if I only had 3 or 4 news posters, I could split the work load up by !@#$%^&*igning different zones to keep an eye on for news and events. For example, one person to watch the SSCC network, and one to watch SSCU, and so on and so forth. Anyway, TJ is always good for negative feed back, but never gives an example about what is wrong. If you don't like it, thats fine, and I will work at changing the things that need to be done. I will try and possibly code a theme, but I figure if I look around I can find one that suits my needs, and go from there.
ThunderJam Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I mean i dont bother with trying to help every project ever :/ So i just tell what i see bad about it, so they can try and improve it. What i specifically don't like about the look is a few things.a) Fixed width single color themec) too complex If it is gonna basically be a news feed, id suggest a very simple layout with not much in nav bars. Check out the ssbase site.
Hakaku Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 The ssbase is a poor excuse for a website, and shouldn't be imitated (it's not even a news site). But here are some good examples of previously active news sites: sscentral.com (2001), sscentral.com (2004), subspace.net (2000), subspacehq.com (2000), subspacehq.com (2002), subspace.nu (2000), subspacerealm.com (2001), subspace.ogaming.com... So in comparison, I'd say that dark colours and blue shades seems to be a recurring theme on central news websites. Although seeing how it's phpnuke, I'm sure you could provide a secondary layout just for ThunderJam
»CypherJF Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 too much scrolling; website layout is really too busy.
Steigerwald Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 if your making a news site, use wordpress.
»D1st0rt Posted June 27, 2008 Report Posted June 27, 2008 Or if you wanted to try something new and fancy you could go Powered by Reddit. Much more community collaborative though.
rootbear75 Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) how the !@#$%^&* can you have an "unknown" OS?what os is NOT on that list?!(that is used, almost 50% of the time) Edited June 28, 2008 by rootbear75
»D1st0rt Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 OSX isn't PPC, or the OS could just be not reported in the User-Agent
L.C. Posted June 28, 2008 Report Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) And it isn't hard at all to change your user-agent at all. In fact it would only take about 5 seconds or less for me to change my user-agent (including the Operating System part). EDIT :: You should invest in using Wordpress or Fusion over phpNuke (which is very vulnerable / lacks a lot of security / easy to hack). Edited June 28, 2008 by L.C.
Resol Posted July 1, 2008 Author Report Posted July 1, 2008 I appreciate everyones input. I thought maybe I would have a little more time to devote to this, but summer is just really busy for me. Perhaps we could put a small group togeather to make a new layout and use Fusion or Wordpress, whatever will server its purpose better. I think now that its up, its still a good place to read zone news, and I have got a decent amount of people willing to post new storys. It would be nice to complete this by fall, but we will see how it goes. Also, I still encourage you to become a member, it only takes a moment, and also lets me and the others know that its not for nothing. Thanks again, any more suggestions?
