Solitron Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) Well I started out using png files, but even with PNG Crush, the filesize was rediculous. The png shipset was about 1.34mb! So I changed them all to jpg and it went down to around 530kb! But once again had another setback. As soon as I changed format, the ships decided to film black pixels around the ships and I can't remove it with MS Paint. I used the Fill With Color function with the color blue to see all the damage done. And this is what I get: http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/9782/errorpy8.th.jpg(This is ship1, all ships have been affected by the same pixel damage however.) So I went over some of the black stuff with pencil, then re-filled with black and saved. Re-opened the file and filled with blue again only to see nothing had changed at all! So basically, I cannot get rid of it myself. Im thinking someone with Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro might have the tools for this. Is there anyone on these boards that can help me with this problem? ThunderJam Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) I cant do this atm since i dont have access to my computer with all my gfx software, but if its still undone tonight or tomoro I will knock it out. Theres a tool that will select all pixels similar to a certain color. So you would set a tolerance of like 12 or so, select a pure black pixel, and it would select all those slightly off-black ones too, then you just make them all completely black. As far as file size goes, I always use png's myself, but I reduce the color depth to 256, which takes a lot away from the filesize Edited June 9, 2008 by ThunderJam
»Purge Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 You can't really use JPG for animations in Continuum even if you fill them with pure black. To fix this convert it to PNG and fill the empty space with pure black. Then try changing the color depth to 256 colors as TJ said and then use PNGGauntlet to compress the PNG even more. I'm not sure if the LVZ will change the filesize any lower, but that should significantly reduce the filesize of the PNG.
Solitron Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) I understand. But if one were to use the above method as TJ had listed, you'd want to set the tolerance to about 9 or so. Some of the black tiles are dark. Also, I don't want to trouble anyone with this, but I appreciate your offer ThunderJam. I will try to fix this problem myself for now then. And Purge, im not sure what you two mean by saving the PNG with color depth at 256, because MS Paint has no fuction like that. As for PNGGauntlet, downloaded and installed it, using it now. Update: PNGGauntlet makes no difference, it says it cannot compress any further. Edited June 9, 2008 by Solitron
Hakaku Posted June 9, 2008 Report Posted June 9, 2008 Can you upload the original image somewhere, so that it'll be much easier to fix & edit.

If you do this then you won't have to convert it to PNG, but depending on how detailed yours colors are the quality will be affected.
Solitron Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) Alright gotcha, I had saved all to 256 color bmp and only 2 went down in size, however it was significant. As for those who want me to upload, I have attatched the shipset in a rar folder. Included are the two 256 color bmps. The problem remains that the filesize could definatley be smaller. Solitron Posted June 9, 2008 Author Report Posted June 9, 2008 Well cReEmY managed to compress 2 ships(5 and 7), but im also left with over a MB. And im having problems with ships 5 and 7 still, I fill certain areas on the ships with black pixels, shade 12 like all the others, but in-game they appear blank and they look like they got eaten by a cheese grater. Is it possible for someone to fix this? MS Paint gives me problems yet again. fillerup.rar
Hakaku Posted June 10, 2008 Report Posted June 10, 2008 The best compression format is by far .gif ; and seeing how SubSpace has mostly 2d graphics, it's advantageous. The .JPG extension should only be used for photos, because it'll distort the quality, while .PNG is good all-around. Anyhow, I've attached two folders below. the first is compressed at 256 colours, and the second is compressed at 16 colours. Although there's not a great difference, the filesize is slightly more reduced in the second, but you also get some quality loss unlike the first. Anyhow, if you need any other help, don't hesitate to ask.Shipset085.rarShipset086_loss.rar
Solitron Posted June 10, 2008 Author Report Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) Thanks Hakaku, I didn't think to even change the format to .gif but I think i'll use the first one. Really cool of you to make 2 and go out of your way like that though. Now I gotta hope I can figure out why ships 5 and 7 want to be so stubborn! Update: Well, it's taking forever but I am fixing 5 and 7 lol. Anyways I think that'll do folks, filesize is under 700kb which will have to do, certainly better than what it was, and thanks again guys. Moderators feel free to lock this topic now.
