»Ceiu Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 So, since I'm not going to let you continue to evade this question: Exactly what reason do you have for not releasing the source? A quick recap of this mess:- The source provides no additional functionality or thread beyond that of the Oracle. That is, anything you could do by having the source could also be done by using the Oracle.- The Oracle is, for all intents and purposes, unreliable for any serious applications (which in turn means you'll see nothing but more chat clients... which we certainly do not need). The "advantage" Oracle has is that it's easy to use and it's controlled. Of course, I would argue that the latter is a major disadvantage and the main reason I'm even wasting my time here, but even I can't deny how it could serve as the kill-switch should the dreaded ss-apocalypse ever come about from this (heh). Now, since I'd just be reiterating these points over and over again, I'll just stop here and give you (Snruuub) a chance to respond. Ok go.
Snrrrub Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 Well, the two points you mentioned form the core of my argument. Frankly, I'm testing the waters to see whether making the Continuum encryption more accessible has a net positive effect on the game. If so, I'll be more comfortable with alternate distribution forms (and I assume SSC and PriitK would be too). On the other hand, if things get out of control, at least I have a way of undoing the damage I cause. The bottom line is that I really don't want to be the one to kill this game. Anyway, I have a bunch of other points that I wanted to mention w.r.t. your comments in the other thread but I'm heading off to Mexico in < 8 hours so it will have to wait until I return. I'll email you an amazingly simple way someone can cheat (and see what s/he is doing) when I return. I'll also describe publicly a way that we can deter such behaviour (although I admit it won't be "secure" in any cryptographic sense and might not be entirely practical given our current developer-base). -Snrrrub
»doc flabby Posted June 7, 2008 Report Posted June 7, 2008 (edited) Maybe a better soultion would be to hold on to the source untill there is a project that is worth giving the source too. I see little point in releasing it at this moment in time, whilst there is nothing to use it. My arguement is that IF there was a project that would truly benefit from the source being released, it should be done, or prehaps released privatly to that projcet. At this moment in time I cant see any apps that it would benefit. If it can be used as a prize or reward for sucessful development of a new client i think it would encorage developement. Edited June 7, 2008 by doc flabby

Which is perfectly understandable and the answer I was looking for. Thank you.I just wish you guys would say stuff like this before I completely unload with one of my rants and look silly later when statements like these are made.
