»Lynx Posted December 23, 2009 Report Posted December 23, 2009 First person to post after me gets $20. Just seeing who actually still reads this topic, since no one has posted in like a year. AHAHAHA NOONES READ IT! FREE $20 IF YOU POST! I read the thread, but alas... it is only in a failed attempt to find a way to play Subspace on a MacBook Running Subspace on a MacBook is possible with Wine, too. I've written up walk throughs that are friendly for people who aren't used to the command line, too. i can't run in windowed mode properly and some zones don't allow me to use my max resolution, so it looks bad if i played in fullscreen at the resolutions they allow. anyone have a solution? Trench Wars has a resolution limit. This is applicable to everybody, and I believe is only there so people can't play with outlandisly large resolutions and get kills from farther away. I'd suggest talking to their dev team or making a thread on their forums if you'd like this to change. What problems are you having in Windowed mode? Quote
kid Posted December 24, 2009 Report Posted December 24, 2009 @Lynx: I understand the purpose of a resolution limit, but I was saying that prevented me from playing in that zone specifically whereas some other zones do not have resolution limits. That being said, I also solved this problem by running Continuum in a virtual window by changing my wine configuration. Quote
Samapico Posted December 25, 2009 Report Posted December 25, 2009 TW is the only zone I know of that uses this (stupid, imo) resolution limit option. Limiting the resolution isn't very 2010 if you ask me. (this statement will make sense in a week) Quote
Kilo Posted December 26, 2009 Report Posted December 26, 2009 A resolution limit is akin to banning players from a real-life sport who have certain superior physical traits, such as height, weight, or eyesight. Not only is a resolution limit inconvenient, but playing on a lower resolution can be outright ugly on certain monitors. I've been getting Continuum running better than it does in Windows, through Wine, using certain settings and correct drivers, on OpenSUSE. Only caveat is that I have to play in Windowed mode which sacrifices a tiny bit of resolution but actually works pretty well with multiple workspaces (full screen works too but tabbing-out doesn't seem to work at all.) »Xog Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 cool shit LC, im gonna try that out when I get home tonight! I have the new version of wine but I didn't even try installing it without patching it - in fact it didn't even work when I tried to patch it ( Quote

Guest guest Posted March 11, 2010 Report Posted March 11, 2010 Is your kernel32.dll just a post-patched source copy? The patch as shown in http://wiki.minegoboom.com/index.php/Running_Continuum_under_Wine Quote
Kilo Posted March 13, 2010 Report Posted March 13, 2010 (edited) MGB seems to be down for me, so I can't link the original post, but I'll just mention that I've been having trouble with Continuum .40 ever since switching to OpenSUSE 11.2. 11.2 + Any Wine Version with patch + Continuum .40 = segfault when the zone list pops up. .39pr1, .38, and probably other versions: no problem. Also maybe I'm missing something here, but I haven't found anything written about why we have to use a patch and don't submit an actual bug report about the issue? It's really not feasible to keep up with the latest version (which amazingly enough some of us need for things other than Continuum) but then source patch whenever there's a binary incompatibility or absolute need to keep other changes to kernel32. tcsoccerman Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 I'm not sure if this is specific to me or not, but I just upgraded to 10.04 and running continuum does not work using the wine trick. Basically what happens is the mouse becomes very jumpy. Opening system monitor shows a process for continuum for a little bit with N/A in all of the column fields. Then it turns into a no-name process, and you can't end it. It looks like I found the cure to my addiction. 10.04 is amazing! Quote

vex0r Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Hi all, My project for the day has been getting Continuum 040 to work on CrunchBang, a Debian distro. So far I've done a lot of work and am almost done, but I can't think of a workaround for this error. What I've done so far: 1. Compiled a patched version of wine 1.1.23 from source code as per the instructions on winehq for continuum installation. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=37031a) I also had to make sure that I had all of the 32-bit X development libraries, along with freetype development libraries. There are scripts available that will help you with this. 2. Installed the regular version of Continuum for windows using wine. 3. Encountered classic "Failed to load dynamic link library menures.dll" upon running Continuum in wine. I was able to work around this. In the hidden .wine directory, there are two important folders: ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Continuum and ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system. Wine appears to look for continuum in the system directory while installing it to program files, so i created a symbolic link from system to program files, then copied the .dll files from program files to system (cp *.dll). Now I can load the program. 4. Noticed that the program loads without any icons or fonts. What I get is the bare skin without any ship icons or letters whatsoever (aside from those that appear on the GUI buttons). However, if I click, for example, Profile, the menu screens in there load just fine. Through some guesswork I was able to try to join a zone using my correct username and password. I get to the screen with the flying stars (right before a zone is entered) and then the program crashes, complaining that it cannot load graphics file tallfont.bm2. I have no idea why this is happening and I can't begin to think of a workaround. Experts? Thank you. Quote
vex0r Posted December 28, 2011 Report Posted December 28, 2011 Nvm, after some more thought, was able to fix by replacing the symbolic link with a hard link. Works great now! Quote

Kilo Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 I posted http://www.subspace.co/topic/26105-wine-patched-for-continuum-opensuse-build-service/ a while ago. If you are using one of the distros that is directly supported (not sure if that's only openSUSE at this point, apparently I'll have to do some more research to create .debs for Debian/Ubuntu at least) then it should be very painless. However I can confirm that the kernel32.dll.so that is built with this method is transferrable to similar Wine versions (1.1.30ish?) Quote
Guest Kyll Posted August 12, 2012 Report Posted August 12, 2012 Could someone please update this thread with how to get Continuum 4.0 working with current versions of Linux and Wine? Ubuntu 12.04 and Wine 1.5-10 for example? The old threads are outdated and don't work. Quote
