On a side note though, why are they remaining uncontacted? Our version of the Prime Directive? Preservation of them as a 'wildlife reserve' or for research/observation purposes?

Not much research can be done if they remain uncontacted. Governments probably don't want to contact them since they will most likely go extinct after contact like all of the other tribes that were contacted by other nations.

I saw this in another news report earlier on. They're among about 100 or so uncontacted tribes left in the world, most of them actually living in Brazil. The government wants to create protective mesures so that their territories aren't exploited by illegal logging and the such, but in this case it would require the help of the Peruvian government as well. And from the sounds of the article, they'd rather protect these tribes from outside contact as much as possible.

Its good that they are going to be left untouched. Seems man has come a long way since the days when the missionaries would be there as quick as possible to convert them all.

when tribes get contacted, they end up being bums begging for money because going back into the forest would be living a lie and hunting and forestry skills aren't applicable in the modern world.

It's very interesting how their weapons are similar to the weapons produced world wide. Shows how intelligent us humans really are.
