L.C. Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 Zone name : AcidicIP : 192.168.1.101Port : 5530Firstly, that is a private IP address only you and the people in your LAN will and are able to see. Your internet IP can be found through http://www.whatismyip.com/. The following is a list of directory servers I use in my Continuum client (copied and pasted): warpath.hlrse.net dir.cz.sshq.net sscentral.sscuservers.net ssdir.playsubspace.com
Static Posted June 1, 2008 Author Report Posted June 1, 2008 Firstly, that is a private IP address only you and the people in your LAN will and are able to see. Your internet IP can be found through http://www.whatismyip.com/. Okay, so under the [Misc] section do I replace 192.168.1.101 with 71.59.85.64 (My IP)? I also added the servers that you provided under the [Directory] section, but clicking on "Download New Zones" doesn't download my zone.
Hakaku Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 I don't know why L.C. referred you to that, but your IP should just be " 127.0.0.1 " (this is the same thing as localhost). And because this is your own IP, you won't be able to add your own zone directly from the download list, but rather you'll have to add it manually. Press the "Add custom..." button from the Add/Update Zone menu in Continuum. The "Zone Name" can be anything you want. The IP Address should be " 127.0.0.1 ", and the port will be whatever port your zone is.
Static Posted June 1, 2008 Author Report Posted June 1, 2008 I see. But isn't that the loop-back address? And how would other users access my zone through "127.0.0.1"?
L.C. Posted June 1, 2008 Report Posted June 1, 2008 (edited) Okay, so under the [Misc] section do I replace 192.168.1.101 with 71.59.85.64 (My IP)?No. You don't change a thing on your side. The IP address that http://www.whatismyip.com/ gives you is the IP that -everyone- on the internet will see. When I go to download a fresh batch of zones from a directory server, that is the IP I will be seeing. That is the IP you should be advertising to people, not your local, private IP address (192.168.x.x). I also added the servers that you provided under the [Directory] section, but clicking on "Download New Zones" doesn't download my zone. That's because under [Directory] in your server.ini you do not have the directory server added under "IP." Here's an example excerpt from one of the zones I host:IP=dir.cz.sshq.net,sscentral.sscuservers.net,ssdir.playsubspace.com,74.52.122.58(For some reason IPB cuts off at "playsubspace" and wraps it to a second line.) I don't know why L.C. referred you to that, but your IP should just be " 127.0.0.1 " (this is the same thing as localhost). If understanding you correctly, you are referring to the zone and biller information in server.ini. If so, then yes. 127.0.0.1 would be most proper because it's the local IP address of your machine. The 192.168.x.x IP might also work, but that's less proper to use (where as 127.0.0.1 will always work). You only use 127.0.0.1 if you are trying to connect to a biller or zone that is hosted on the same computer you are trying to connect to from. And because this is your own IP, you won't be able to add your own zone directly from the download list, but rather you'll have to add it manually. Press the "Add custom..." button from the Add/Update Zone menu in Continuum. The "Zone Name" can be anything you want. The IP Address should be " 127.0.0.1 ", and the port will be whatever port your zone isCorrect. To other people it will be the IP address that http://www.whatismyip.com/ gives you instead of 127.0.0.1 (which you should know of course ). I see. But isn't that the loop-back address? And how would other users access my zone through "127.0.0.1"?They don't. They access your zone through the IP address that http://www.whatismyip.com/ throws at you. If they got a zone listing from a directory server and selected your zone to see the information (such as IP, Port, Zone Name and Description) they would be seeing the IP address that you would get from http://www.whatismyip.com/. 127.0.0.1 (Your machine, you)192.168.x.x (Your local area network IP address that only you and people on the same network/router/hub/switch see)76.59.267.41 (generic example; this is the IP address that everyone else on the internet will see -- this is you of course, or your router; also known as your Internet IP) If you are under a router, that will be your IP but also the router's IP. Everyone that is connected to that router will have that same IP address because what a router does is take all those machines and basically combine them into "one machine" or a single IP address. Normally if you used a switch or a hub that didn't assign IPs to the computers connected to it, only one of the machines on that switch or hub (or none at all) would be able to use the internet. When you order a basic, standard subscription of internet from your ISP, you are given one private IP address. Using a router allows you to have multiple computers to be on that IP address (remember that multiple computers on the internet in reality cannot have the same IP address). This explains why a bunch of computers connected to a hub or switch would be unable to use the internet (with the possible exception of one of those computers) even though the switch would be hooked up to the DSL/Cable modem. Every computer or machine will have at least one IP address: 127.0.0.1. If not, two: 127.0.0.1 and either a 192.168.x.x or some low-ranged IP address in the 10.x.x.x range or some IP between 0.x.x.x and 20.x.x.x (I don't know the actual range, but that's about a safe range to identify). It not, three: 127.0.0.1, 192.168.x.x or a low-ranged IP address between 0 and 20[.x.x.x], and an internet or public IP address that everyone on the internet will see (http://www.whatismyip.com/). The first two IPs are local, private IP addresses. Nobody on the internet will be able to ping them or see them. The second IP address is only visible to people on the same local area network, or connected to the same router, same hub, same switch. The third IP is what everyone does see and can ping. I wouldn't recommend finding out your own IP address because it won't work most of the time, and it creates more problems for those who have a dynamic IP.
Static Posted June 1, 2008 Author Report Posted June 1, 2008 Thank you so much for the help, guys! I entered in the "IP:"s under the [Directory] section, but I still haven't managed to get the zone to show up when I click on "Download", so I have to click on "Add custom zone". IP : 71.59.85.64Port : 5537Zone : Acidic Current zones: PublicWarSBCityFastAcidic Some are just temporary test zones. And I have a static IP.
rootbear75 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 (edited) also set up your router for port-forwarding. (if people are unable to connect. If a firewall is set up as well, unblock this port on the UDP protocol.) Forward PORT and PORT+1 this will ensure all traffic to your zone goes to the right place Edited June 3, 2008 by rootbear75
