It is actually not that strict anymore from other stories I have read, and is actually pretty easy to get around. a lot of people think familys will use this to take an easier route though.

apparently its strict in the cities, but not in the rural areas where people still have 5 kids quite frequently.

Wow root, what next, your momma is so fat her belt size is equator? - We've all heard it, and it don't get any funnier the more we hear it.

Anyway, to go back on topic, I heard that from a column in The Times, so it's probably true, that's a pretty reputable paper.

I'd like to see what the trend for adoption is, the Chinese have been killing a lot of their female due to their honour of male children carrying on their names... - I think the current population is like 70% male. Talk about sausage fest.. :/

I thought they just twisted the one child per family rule to only have male children?

Ahhh !@#$%^&* now I remember, it's one female per family, and as many males as you want now, isn't it? Military might!

I don't know. I've just read that it's one child per family, all other children have to be euthenased (sp?), however, as most families cannot afford the euthanasia, they are often just left on the streets. This may be exadurated, as I never heard this from a very reputable source, but due to Chinese tradition, it's always an "honour" to have a male child - so fathers often dispose of their female babies, and try harder for male babies. This has caused the 70/30 male to female ratio.

I have heard similar reports so i think this is likely to be accurate to some extent
