Testtube Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I would like to see the link point to ssdl to grab the client. For several reasons. As far as uptime and time serving the community no one beats SSDL. It has been part of sscentral/ssforum before mosts webmasters learned how to use MS Paint. SSDL as far as i know already gets a great deal of the community traffic and new traffic And its stats are close if not better than ssforums The server Itself is centrally located for US Residents will have better connectivity accessing getcontinuum On top of that the Server Does not use any cogent in the bandwidth mix and has better peering to the EU than the server Getcontinuum is hosted on. From the traceroutes i have seen. With that being said This server also hosts ssforum seems silly to transfer people viewing from the forum that they can already reach to click the link to another server that may or may not be down. Its fine to have a "community" website to help educate people about the game But there is only one main download center for the community and thats SSDL as it always has been
»1587200 Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Of course you would, but face it, SSDL is old, dieing, outdated and use primarily for dev purposes.
Testtube Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 ssforum in the past has always used subspacedownloads.com for file service i dont see it changing.
JDS Posted May 9, 2008 Author Report Posted May 9, 2008 ive always had a bigger preference for ssdl that website been there for as long as i can remember
»1587200 Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Just because it's not your server TT doesn't mean that the uptime is any different. Everyone these days boasts 99.9% uptime. Becides, what difference does it make where people download the game? As long as they're downloading, it shouldn't matter.
Testtube Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 You are right everyone and thier brother can say they have 99.9% uptime But the majority do not. There was a uptime thread on this forum with many community websites being monitored. This server was the only one that represented 100% uptime. for over 6+ months Uptime alone is only part of it. The other part is if they are on a server where they can see the "download now link" Why ship them off to another server that may be down to download that link I dont care who gets the traffic it would be stupid to redirect the user from someplace that is up (Because they visited the forum to see the link. to another server that may or may not be down) or have the account suspended or whatever the case may be. The Ideal method to handle this would be let SSFORUM handle the file download off the same server. It will be interesting to see reasons as to why thats not the best way of doing it.
Samapico Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I'll have to agree with TT... Most likely there would be a 'Download Continuum' thing on the navbar, but there should also be a 'GetContinuum.com' item somewhere in the community sites, since it is one of the main portals. But if we'd put, for example, 'Get started' with a link, that link would go to getcontinuum, since it has beginner guides and such.
Testtube Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I think the idea is nice to have a client download from the forum I just dont think it needs to redirect the person away from the server
Aceflyer Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I'll have to agree with TT... I also agree with the above. It makes logical sense to have SSForum itself handle the file download for a Download Continuum thing. It also makes logical sense to have a GetContinuum.com item under Community Resources. Further, it may be a good idea to have "Get Started" with a link to GetContinuum.com for the reasons Samapico has already said.
JDS Posted May 9, 2008 Author Report Posted May 9, 2008 im sure ssforum can handle a less - than 10 mb file.... however in the end it makes no difference where the game is downloaded from, as long as its easy and fast
Cancer+ Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I'm going to go with TT on this one. 99% of the time getcontinuum.com wouldn't be down. But there is always that 1%. If you are clicking the link on ssforum, then ssdl is obviously working too. Picture - directed to ssdl Definitely get a link in the navbar pointed to getcontinuum.com I'm not so sure about this "get started" link. It seems like overkill to me. More links to the same place. That is why there are "Tips" in the game itself.
rootbear75 Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 (edited) funny thing i noticed, highlight the "Download Continuum link" on GetContinuum.com, look at the statusbat, and see where it points to... now look at the "Download Mirror" hmmm strange Edited May 9, 2008 by rootbear75
Testtube Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I dont find that strange at all. Everyone knows where to get continuum from. SSDL is far from dead.
ThunderJam Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Well since some of you were saying just make sure its on the nav bar... Better idea:Look at the top navbar, and see how SUBSPACE has its own lil trapezoid section on the left? Make a second lil trapezoid right next to it that is "Download Continuum." GG
Aceflyer Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Isn't that what we were already planning to do, TJ?
CRe Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 funny thing i noticed, highlight the "Download Continuum link" on GetContinuum.com, look at the statusbat, and see where it points to... hmmm strangeIts not strange at all. Its always been ssdl. You've just never noticed.
ThunderJam Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 something like this... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/tman563/navbar.png
Samapico Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Only thing is that since it is written 'subspace' , it looks like if Subspace and Continuum were unrelated...
PoLiX Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Only thing is that since it is written 'subspace' , it looks like if Subspace and Continuum were unrelated... mm? And Nav Bar Updated.
Samapico Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 Only thing is that since it is written 'subspace' , it looks like if Subspace and Continuum were unrelated...mm?Talking about this: something like this...http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/tman563/navbar.png The way he put them makes them look like 2 separate things. Plus, one would have a link, not the other... would be weird. Anyway, the fix you made is pretty much what I had in mind
Dr Brain Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 GetContinuum.com, the official SubSpace/Continuum portal Official? How is it official in any way?
Samapico Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 Well, all ads, banners and such point to getcontinuum.com because it has the big shiny 'download' button. I don't know about it being "official"... but I would guess that most new players go through there.
