rootbear75 Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Seriously, some of the silly abbreviations need to come to an end. Half of these are either1) re!@#$%^&*ed2) so uncommon, someone must have just made it up. I will list the ones that seem completely rediculous:i mean, half of the abbreviations i see, ONLY apply to hyperspace bb: be backbbiab: be back in a bit bbs: be back soonbeta: beta SubSpace (VIEbsg: Battlestar Galactica (TV and film series)cba: can't be a**edcbf: can't be f**ked fab: fabulousforce: purposely induce lag (uh NO? do you not understand what "Force" means?)grate: greatiirc: if I recall correctlyilu: I love you (NO NO NO, ITS I <3 U)in spec: in spectator mode (seriously... this is NOT an abbreviation)irt: in real timekeke or kekeke or kekekeke: laughter ( )nbsg: Battlestar Galactica (reimagined) (TV and film series) (god !@#$%^&*, whoever wrote this is a dork)lancing: flying a lancaster (maybe in HS, thats about it)non-ssc or non ssc: not on SSC biller or not on SSC network (uhhh, self explanitory?)noobcake or n00bcake or nubcake: inexperienced player (derogatory) (NO NO NO NO NO!)noobd or noob'd or n00bd or n00b'd: overcame easily (derogatory)obsg: Battlestar Galactica (original) (TV and film series) (Im seriously going to murder this guy....)phreaking: hacking of non-Internet equipment ( )pl: Pure_Luck (uhhhh... no? pl usually means packetloss)plz or plzz or plzzz or puhlease or puhleaze or puh-leaze: please (......)qt: cutie or quiet (O.o)roffle: rolling on floor laughing (haha, i remember this one, i think i coined it , still stupid however)sop: standard operating procedure (Never heard anyone say this...)specced: switched to spectator mode (nooo... really?)st: Star Trek (TV and film series) (i swear to god, if i see another one, im gonna cry)supered or super'ed: put on temporary superpower (....no)sw: Star Wars (TV and film series) ()tbc: to be continuedtrek: Star Trek (TV and film series) ()tty: talk to youttys: talk to you soon wtfh: what the f**king h*ll (its one or the other... Aceflyer Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 The abbreviations listed above are valid. Furthermore, although many of us know all of them well already, the page is for newcomers who may not know them so well; better safe than sorry, i.e. better to be as comprehensive as possible.
rootbear75 Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) i know. but what about the Star Trek ones... i mean.. seriouslyi mean, if the target audience who would play ss were people who have NEVER used the internet or chat, then sure, go right ahead, but most of the target audience we have the ads for, already know basic abbrevs Edited May 7, 2008 by rootbear75
Aceflyer Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 You'd be surprised what some people know and don't know.
rootbear75 Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) but the point is, they are so outrageous... i have never ONCE heard them in all my years playing well if you arent going to take them out, at least sort them into zone specific categories. Lancing is usually only heard in HS, lt/leviterr is heard in TW Edited May 7, 2008 by rootbear75
Aceflyer Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 but the point is, they are so outrageous... i have never ONCE heard them in all my years playing well if you arent going to take them out, at least sort them into zone specific categories. Lancing is usually only heard in HS, lt/leviterr is heard in TW I've heard like pretty much all of 'em. I don't see a need to sort them into zone-specific categories, seeing as "leviterr/lt" or "lancing" are the only two zone-specific abbreviations I see in the entire Abbreviations page.
rootbear75 Posted May 7, 2008 Author Report Posted May 7, 2008 (edited) i found a few others but i forgot what they were oh yes... javving, usually only heard in TW Dep, usually only heard in MG Edited May 7, 2008 by Aceflyer No need to flame
Aceflyer Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 i found a few others but i forgot what they were oh yes... javving, usually only heard in TW I've heard the term "javving" used in a variety of zones, including but not limited to TW. Dep, usually only heard in MG See what Purge said (below).
»Purge Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 Dep is used in multiple zones, not only MG. That's why I added it. It is used in Halo, DSB, MG, FZ, EG, and probably more.
Samapico Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 javving is used wherever there is a jav...which is, pretty much every zone same for lancing, warbirding, spidering, leving, terring, weaseling, sharking Some of these are 'terms', not abbreviations... javving and leviterr are good examples. These are fine...but I don't see what chatting abbreviations (tty, yep) have to do in the wiki :/ There are other sites for these. When I hear some weird abbreviation, I just google 'abbreviation whlpfg' and hit 'I'm feeling lucky'Abbreviations specific to the game, such as lt, tk, ... are fine though Or atleast split them in 2 sections The TV series ones are ridiculous though... If someone says SW, it will most likely be in a conversation implying Jedis and ewoks... so... yeah. Why don't I add NWOBHM, SSO!@#$%^&*, CSIT... ? Because they're metal related and NOBODY CARES ABOUT THEM and if I was to talk about new wave of british heavy metal, it would be with metalheads who KNOW what it is about... so yeah... same !@#$%^&*... Battlestar galactica has nothing to do in the list, really
Cancer+ Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Honestly, I don't see the point of having that page. If someone doesn't understand what bb or bbiab means, then they can simply ask the person who said it. It shouldn't be on the Wiki IMHO. Now things like DEP or javving or whatever terms are used IN Subspace would be understandable. But things like roffle, noobcake, obsg are just pointless. If people want to know, they can ask the person who said it.
Aceflyer Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 I think that's reasonable. Whatcha think CRe>, Combine, Killerbot?
rootbear75 Posted May 9, 2008 Author Report Posted May 9, 2008 i dont see why you are only asking the moderators of the wiki... the wiki is a GROUP thing, open to the whole community. and thats what i was trying to get at is the fact that some of those abbreviations are completely unneccessary or unrelated at all
CRe Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 They are still abbreviations. Some of those are heard in multiple zones so..
Aceflyer Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 i dont see why you are only asking the moderators of the wiki... the wiki is a GROUP thing, open to the whole community. That is, of course, true, but the Wiki Moderators as a group are responsible for, well, moderating the Wiki, which includes making judgments about relevant content. They are still abbreviations. Some of those are heard in multiple zones so.. I really don't mind either way, so I guess if you think that's best...
Cancer+ Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 So is !@#$%^&*bag, !@#$%^&*rocket, !@#$%^&*, !@#$%^&*got. I don't see those up there. I think they should only relate to subspace. The game and the gameplay, not the environment.
Aceflyer Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 So is !@#$%^&*bag, !@#$%^&*rocket, !@#$%^&*, !@#$%^&*got. I don't see those up there. Those aren't abbreviations. They are just bad language, which some zones happen to ban. The content currently there is content that is legal throughout Continuum, to the best of my knowledge. SSWiki wouldn't want to 'sponsor', effectively, terms that are illegal to use in some SSC zones. I think they should only relate to subspace. The game and the gameplay, not the environment. The terms currently there are frequently - very very frequently - used in Continuum, and hence can be said to be related to the game and the gameplay. I say we make a vote. Still, why not make a vote?
Samapico Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 sorry, but tty isn't part of the gameplay... :/ You can't convince me about that. bsg isn't part of the gameplay either... 'maaaaaaaaaaybe' if there was a zone named Battlestar galactica, then BSG could refer to the zone... but abbreviations of tv shows have nothing to do there. One could say that chatting is part of the gameplay, therefore all chatting abbreviations are part of the gameplay... but seriously... this isn't supposed to be an abbreviations database. It's to teach some ss-related acronyms, abbreviations, and specific terms. If you put stupid abbreviations like 'ilu' or 'plz', you only encourage newbies to use them. And imo (<-- lol) , we shouldn't encourage bad grammar/spelling. This might sound like mommy-talk, but I don't think anyone would want the game to be filled with immature 16-years-olds who type like 8-years-old. Oh... and I was wondering... WHY THE !@#$%^&* is h*ll censored?!?!?!?!?!Not that censoring something makes it any less vulgar, in my opinion... if I say f*ck, everyone knows I said !@#$%^&*. Also... an abbreviation IS NOT an acronym. Most of the chat-related stuff are ACRONYMS, not abbreviations. That's another reason why the abbreviations page should stay with game-related abbreviations, such as neut, tach, ... Some game-related stuff are acronyms as well, but at least they're related to the game, so they have half a reason to be there PS: I think this post sounds a bit angry, now that I read it again. I'm as calm as a rock though, don't worry... I'm not gonna ban your !@#$%^&*es (yet)
»Purge Posted May 10, 2008 Report Posted May 10, 2008 Continuum wiki should be for all things Continuum. negger.
»Lynx Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 The abbreviations page is probably the most re!@#$%^&*ed page I've ever set my eyes on. The only necessary abbreviations, and I mean, necessary for people who ride green buses and lick windows are: Freq = Frequency (Team)Terr = Terrier (Ship)Lanc = Lancaster (Ship)fg = Flag Game and so on... and to be honest, if people don't understand them kinda abbreviations, they're seriously slow. I mean... come on now... If they can't figure !@#$%^&* like that out, I doubt they will even figure out how to get in a ship. :/ Remember, we're actually teaching humans how to play this game, not !@#$%^&*ing monkeys.
