Aileron Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 Would it be possible to set up a PC as a server, and host a small zone out of it?
battleboy Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 ummmmm, ROFL LOL, this is one -*BAD WORD*- of a post. lmao newb' date=' locking this for your own good[/quote']
Guest leep! Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 yes. bandwidth? <- is gonna hurt, so i hope its a slow moving zone. work alright for 5-10 people, not great w/o true highspeed. prolly not worth it.
Dyers eve Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 True, it gets laggy with a bigger amount of people, so its no fun to play...But its possible, it sure is
Yupa Posted November 25, 2003 Report Posted November 25, 2003 it's a great solution for just testing your own zone stuff out, as it can often be difficult acquiring sysop powers in a zone with dedicated hosting
madhaha Posted November 26, 2003 Report Posted November 26, 2003 Aren't most lowend servers running on a PC based system? The issue isn't really with the amount of processing power or memory the server has (almost all computers can handle the load these days), rather the internet connection. So I think your question is more "can I run a small zone off a home internet connection?" It should be fine if your zone is small and if you have a static ip or you use a special DNS server like http://www.no-ip.com/ providing you have a broadband connection. You'll need to keep your computer running 24/7 but if its stable and its got ok cooling that shouldn't be a problem. Ideally if you parents have a dedicated high speed "work" connection you should ask if you can borrow it. You can just about get away with hosting on a 56k dialup as long as there are less than 5 people in the zone and so long as the gameplay isn't too frantic. So if you've got an old Pentium II kicking around and a decent connection, go for it! Does that answer your question?
