Lol, my computer has been overheating since January, even when I have my room's temperature at 15, so I took a shop-vac and completely blew/sucked out all the dust and now it's running super quietly, and so far there hasn't been any overheating shutdowns.

type of crash, screen... the one that tells you it shut down your pc to save your h/d?

Nah... the one that doesn't tell you anything... Even when booting back up, it doesn't tell me Windows was not properly shut down :/

Looked a lot like a overheating shut down too, but didn't make any sense since I just had fixed that particular issue lol

anyway... it seems to run fine now

install 'notebook hardware control' to monitor your harware temperature

ASUS casings suck btw, much less sturdy than my old Compaq one

You said you want to do gaming and carry it everywhere. I would pick one of those, probably portability (laptops are essential for giving presentations). You can use a desktop or console for gaming. The other catch with portability is the small ones tend to cost more. I've seen people in lectures with Dell x300's, Thinkpad x40's and VAIO's (never saw a model number), I don't know if they're any good though. I also heard those shiny screens aren't very good for graphics work since displaying dark colors turns them into mirrors.

Dont buy dell. Not if you want a laptop to last longer then 1 year.
I've had my Dell laptop nearly 4 years now. Only problem was the bios kept forgetting the time, but that glitch only lasted a few weeks. It might just depend how well you look after it. Edited by Smong

Basically what I really like and am near buying is a dell xps 1530 with 4gb ram, 2.4 ghz processor, and 250gb drive. With a higher res screen and some other junk it totals up to like $1700.

However the head of the CS department im going into suggests something different... what do you think:

He suggests just getting some cheap laptop for the first year, then spending more sophmore year on a better laptop once teh computing curriculum becomes more intense....

Part of me says that makes sense, another part of me doesnt wanna buy 2 laptops in a year and half... If I'm gonna get one I feel like I should just go all in and get one that will last long from right now...

I don't see why you wouldn't buy the better laptop right now... the cheap one would be a waste of money and time

it makes sense, because a year from now, laptops will be more powerful, etc...
