Dav Posted May 1, 2008 Report Posted May 1, 2008 This one gfoes out as a general devolpment suggestion rather then to a specific project so this forum seemed most appropriate. Seeing as people dont always read this forum perhaps it would be a nice addition to have a weekly news bullitin sent out over the whole game. Like with current zone news, when the game is loaded the player will have an option to read the news file. It could contain news that affects the whole game, and plug large events / zone opening / whatever to keep the whole community up to date.

I think you're probably the xxth person to think of that idea and it's getting old. no one wants overall zone/game news simply to increase the e-drama bull!@#$%^&* that goes on around various zones. I vote no.

Strict rules on contents would need to be adheared to and run by trustworth community members. Im saying it should be used for SSC news and zones can put in an event ad every so often. Trouble is a lot of newbs dont know whats going on outside of the zone they play. Im not starting .41 rumors, just saying that should it happen this would be a suggestion for an addition.

Bascially have the client when setup subscribe to a set of "approved" rss feeds (-ie client development feed, ssc news feed, (option to subscribe to zone feeds, for example i would subscribe to the TW.org feed - bascially exactly like smong's newsreader, except within the client)) which could be changed by user if they wanted. This means it would be simple to remove (default) feeds that go bad (content wise), or no longer work in a client update. Edited May 2, 2008 by doc flabby

I like the sound of that, feeds would give a range of content but having the ability to remove things that get political is a must.

I did make a website that does it but not a ingame version. if that could be implimented in a way which could be updated remotly, or as part of a zone list update it would be better.Something like rss://example.com/news.xml inside the zone description could work. To keep compatibility with existing skins a menu option could be added that pops up a separate dialog for viewing the news (it could use an internet explorer control for rendering). Otherwise a new type could be added to the skin definition for a news area. I think this feature would be client side, not on the server/biller. Basically it's just putting an RSS reader in the front end.
