Suicide_Run Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Look guys, Largest and Most Powerful laser in the world....is just near you (well for those who live in California anyways)! National Ignition Facility or NIF is trying to use a laser and by splitting it a ton of times while amplifying it a ton of times too. They are able to increase the power of that 1 laser by a ton and at the end process....the lasers will then compress the frozen hydrogen fuel cell by targeting it all at once. They are hoping by targeting the hydrogen fuel enclosed in a gold-plated cylinder called the hohlraum, the process will cause the hydrogen to fuse and form a small star.... By the way...this project is hoping to be completed by 2010 with a budget of $3.5 Billion US and is already behind scheduled....now you know where some of your tax dollar goes to. You know how they say people will predict we will die in 2012? I think its cause thats when this project finishes and they test it in 2012.....resulting in California blowing up...with the rest of the planet. Source: Gizmodo Hit the source for the video of them describing the laser and stuff far better than I did =/ Theres a small video too!
»Lynx Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Sounds cool, but, sounds like an awful lot of money to be spending on something which will probably cost more to run than what it emits in energy.
JDS Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 it might cost more to run that what it emits in energy... but its a small step towards fusion powa!
»Lynx Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Yeah, but even if they do source fusion power, if one tiny thing goes wrong (And let's face it, something always goes wrong) ... Game Over
X`terrania Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Reminds me of the comedian Bill Hicks and TOOL's Aenima CD. http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=2506 Here in this hopeless !@#$%^&*ing hole we call LAThe only way to fix it is to flush it all awayAny !@#$%^&*ing time, any !@#$%^&*ing dayLearn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay Some say a comet will fall from the skyFollowed by meteor showers and tidal wavesFollowed by faultlines that cannot sit stillFollowed by millions of dumbfounded dipASSS
Dav Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 meh they are building a particle accelerator in Europe to collide particles in to simulate the big bang. Apparently there is a small chance that it could collapse the entire universe... [edit] just found this, quite interesting http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=147042 [/edit]
Samapico Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 uh... aren't there already several particle accelerators in the world? And they do make particles collide... but dunno what's so different about that experiment. It would be pretty funny if the entire universe collapsed with that lolWould be a pretty cool death too... you'd get warped in the timespace continuum or something... and your body would become energy
Suicide_Run Posted April 18, 2008 Author Report Posted April 18, 2008 Wasnt it like when Nuclear Bomb was tested? I thought someone said that if they screwed up during testing of nuclear power or something, it would have caused a black hole or something and we would have all be gone D=
Dav Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Wasnt it like when Nuclear Bomb was tested? I thought someone said that if they screwed up during testing of nuclear power or something, it would have caused a black hole or something and we would have all be gone D=yeah the chances of it actually happening are so small it isn't really worth considering.
Dr Brain Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 The results of a failed fusion test would be no worse than any random thermonuclear bomb test, of which there have been at least a few. Yeah, California might be hit pretty badly, but the rest of the earth would be a-ok.
»Lynx Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Ah, no problem then, it's just Californians, nobody will notice.
Samapico Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 Except for the fact that there will be no more over-stereotyped tv shows involving rich surfers and chicks with huge fake boobs
