Well I started making some changes to make it simpler... The game would be a simple territory fight with some flags in the base. I'll probably let the ball in there for bonus points or something. There would be only one goal in center, and ball would spawn randomly on the sides.

Not really

The current pub is playable and functional though, so people can still go in there blum.gif

I'd just need one or two hours of work to make the modifications I'd like...

I just fail at making bases though lol

I'm trying to have one central base (like it is now), but that base should be defendable kind of like the classic bases were. Like... tubes and stuff...

The point of the game would be to control all the flags within the base. There would be like 2 or 4 of them. When you have all the flags, your team is "in control", which gives you points or something, and eventually makes you win.

The ball would still be there, but it would just give bonus points or something... it wouldn't directly affect who wins the game. This would make the whole thing much simpler me thinks. Good thing is the current plug-in is easily modifiable to fit about any gameplay, so adjusting it shouldn't take me much time.

I attached the map I was working on... It still has Sever's base in the middle, if anyone wants to try to do something that fits what I described above, have fun, and post it here. Help would be appreciated...

The 4 square thingys on each side would be ball spawning points. There would be 1 goal in the middle base... So basically everything happens at the same place, total chaos ensues smile.gif

One of the things I want to do is add in some lvz-based images that would guide the players as to their objectives... Like who is controlling the flags in the base, a quick reminder of the objective everytime the game starts, or when player joins, something that tells you like "Score the ball for bonus points" when you grab the ball from its spawn point... Maybe make these helpers appear only to new players.

If anyone feels like making some images for these kind of things, would be great.

I still want to bring 17th back to life, or atleast make it enjoyable again; but I'll need all the help I can get blum.gif

I think everything is up and running, all we need is for the people to enter.

Easier said than done, getting players these days is getting harder and harder, it seems. Even EG's population has declined.

17th used to be based on leagues, but with no new

blood coming in (probably because of a not-so-good-

pub,) the zone slowly died. ;/

So all we can do now is wait for a pub to become

successful.

..or something.. maybe not.. what do I know.

I'll help bring this back up. I can help with maps and getting people in here. With getting a stable play we simply wait for some to come, and build it up with squad chat, 17th chat ect. So hopefully we can get 20, so some can leave while some enter. Be good when there can be 20 in pub all the time, not now and then

Marketing. Don't just appeal to old users, aim for brand new ones.

1) Fraps some simple game footage and upload it to youtube.

Make it look interesting like a ball game in one of the bases or anything flashy, don't forget to add music (mainstream).

2) Advertise the game in a nice manner, mention it on messageboards related to freeware games / DOS asteroids fanatics, etc.

You may even try your luck at abandonware sites, I'm quite sure you'd get half the userbase of abandonia.com if they knew this game existed.

3) When advertising it, embed the video from youtube.

This will make your advertisement stand out, plus forum creatures simply can't resist youtube links :D

4) Advertise on multiple boards and games similar to Subspace/Continuum.

You might just convert some nonbelievers.

Do step 1-4 in one day.

This way you'll get a nice way of gaining new players in a short amount of time, increases your chances of making public game self-sustained.

Be ready in the coming days

1) Maps / balancing / moderators should be ready before you advertise.

2) As was done when 17th had its first release ever, we all played as much in pub as we humanly could.

This way, new players will see activity and won't leave since the place seems empty.

Even idling in the middle beats sitting in spec happy.png

3) They got questions about the game?

Take your time to give them a decent answer.

Don't rely on them using ?help since they just might be a flunky noob you attracted by advertising.

Customers remember good service, and I dare say subspace noobs are no different.

4) Don't rush hosting events.

Leading all population away from pub will discourage any new player entering.

Only host if the remaining pub population will be big enough to carry on.

5) Make the forum login compatible with Firefox!

IE is old, bad and dying.

That's my 2 cents.

Bye once more, and good luck!

OK i think i got an idea. It would tick all your boxes but it would involve a bigger centre base and would remove most/all the centre walls, but i think that is necessary tbh. Seeing as I'm in bed with a strained back I'll have a go at making it now. It might not be tiled in a nice way, but that can be done later, i'd rather get the structure right.

Looks like DSB had a child with the Rumble arena blum.gif

Corridors are pretty narrow I think

I'M at work so I just took a look reaaaaly quick... didn't even read your email yet

It would work for small games because the base can be defended 1v1, but it's big enough to allow larger games. It will focus the fighting into one space, which will hopefully make small games more intense/fun. The small corridors are not the "main" corridors. There are also 2 spots on each side for attackers to come in and bomb the defenders.

It's going to look like DSB because you want one base that is the centre of attention. The base had to be bigger than what is currently in 17th because it would be uninteresting otherwise. The game on this map is different enough with teams spawned on opposite sides, with the goal as the principle objective.

Having said that, most active 17th'ers play DSB now. Them and our DSB neighbours are our prime audience.

With this map it would also be really fun to have a jackpot timer upon capture of all 4 flags.

I don't know if it's worth me tiling it when i find the time because i haven't heard anything from you. Personally, i think this map would be way more fun, and would actually work in a small pub for building population.

Oh, kinda forgot about that

I dunno... it sure is pretty radical... haven't had much time to check in details; I'll upload it as a subarena when I get some time

I agree with Rifle!!! I see everyone talking about events.. but we need new people too.. the oldies are in other zones right now.. or with wife problems.. or something like that.. and just oldies will not make the pub stable...

Im tring to teach a friend of I and he liked the game!! but he wants to play other zones cause hardly we get someone to play in 17th..

Im really puting every thing i can to bring the zone back.. im not moderator and staff and stuff.. im just a poor old noob 17th frusted player... BUT WITH HOPE!!
