personallly i was always taught it was "sulphur" and was shocked when i learned that sulfur apparently is the "primary" method of spelling in the USA..

 

boggling indeed... perhaps a recent development

I have a medicine box in front of me and funnily enough they spelled it Ferrous Sulphate - I guess it would just look re!@#$%^&*ed if it said "Ferrous Sulfate". Or how about even more re!@#$%^&*ed if it said "Fero Sulfate"? As I said, words don't always spell the way that they're pronounced.

 

You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary. Then look up "aluminium." Check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

its ALUMINUM, not ALUMINIUM, we also pronounce it like its spelled: Aluminum

i know it sounds like F... question is WHY... who in their right mind, oh lets use two random letters to make the F sound.

 

sulPHur ZOMG, that looks SOOO much cooler than sulFur
