Shock Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 A friend called me and said he's having troubles with his PC. First of all, the sound isn't working. I've ran him through a few tests over the phone, and it seems the computer recognizes the sound drivers, the sound just doesn't work. Sometimes when he boots up, the screen just stays blank. My first question is: If the boot GUI is disabled in Windows, and the computer runs chkdisk scan when it boots, will it show up? It apparently stays on a black screen for a LONG time, eventually causing you to reboot it. Happens in Safe Mode as well. Sometimes it boots straight up, others it's just a black screen. It's not possible to listen to the sounds to see if the computer boots, because the sound isn't working. I need to gather ideas to test tomorrow when I get my hands on it. _If_ reinstalling sound drivers doesn't work, what else is there to try? Do you think the elongated black screen is due to Windows boot GUI being disabled? Also, would boot GUI be re-enabled by default when attempting to boot in Safe Mode? Thanks.
Cancer+ Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Is the sound onboard? It sounds like the mobo is going bad. How old is the PC? What kind of motherboard is it?
rootbear75 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 is it on mute? (sorry, i had to ask this question... you never know) and i had some problems with my machine staying black for a while. sometimes my old machine never posted the POST tests or anything that looked like it was run in DOS... i think it had something to do w/ my vid drivers or something
Samapico Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 If you can access the BIOS settings, you might be able to test the speaker (the one that BEEPs when booting, not the ones you plug in the sound card) ; some bios lets you control that speaker (change volume, frequency...)Some boot settings can be changed in the bios as well. And yeah, it sounds like a motherboard problem
Shock Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 Iono, after like 25 reboots (no exagg.) it began working again. He's buying a new one soon, so it shouldn't be a problem as long as he never turns it off.
Shock Posted March 23, 2008 Author Report Posted March 23, 2008 It's a laptop, forgot to mention. This can be closed.
