os dependencie and creating .iso and dual boot

so here's my situation:

 

i want to get a new laptop. on this laptop i want linux. unfortunately most laptop's come with vista on it. vista requires lots of memory while linux can run on minimal memory. on another note, i want to continue developing windows applications.

 

does wine work on making windows applications? including .net framework?

 

can i make a .iso out of my computer's current xp?

 

can i obtain a copy of xp still?

 

if i make a .exe in c or other non scripting languages will it work on both linux and windows(os dependencies).

 

i can dual boot but the problem with that is that i have vista, which what i hear requires like 2gb memory while linux does not require much more than 512. i could save money by getting a 1gb laptop instead of a 2gb.

I've ran Vista without Windows Aero on 512MB of RAM. 1GB is plenty to run Home Premium, I just don't know about Ultimate because I've never used it. Just get 1gb and upgrade if you ever need it.

ok so 1gb is fine? what about storage since i will be dual booting? also if my laptop will be mostly in one spot (my desk/room) will it be ok if i get something such as a toshiba, hp, or another non-bigbrand (like dell). i've heard toshiba and gateways and some like those can break easier than dell. basically any info on laptop's is nice. As long as you have at least 20 GB for each OS, you should be fine. I would recommend more for Vista though. Maybe 40 GB for Vista and 20 GB for Linux. Most computers come with at least 60 GB now.

 

As far as your current XP thing goes, you can always transfer your import files. Maybe you could ghost your hard drive and move the winxp stuff over.

When you compile something on linux, it won't be an exe file. I would recommend using something like vmware or maybe just find a program that allows you to compile for windows on linux.

.NET is kinda weird on linux. You can use mono, but it doesn't always work. Most simple applications work with Wine.

 

WARNING: ALWAYS INSTALL WINDOWS BEFORE LINUX. If you install Windows after you install Linux, it will make Linux not work because for some reason windows wants to corrupt the par!@#$%^&*ions it isn't using. (Shady)

You can still get a laptop with XP on it. I believe you would have to order it from the internet though. Going somewhere like Best Buy or something like that only have Vista, I believe.

 

You can get a copy of XP from anywhere on the internet. You would have to get it from a torrent site more than likely. You would also need a keygen or find serials/cracks, but its possible.

 

You could ghost your old pc and put it on your new one, but I'm not sure how that would work with the new pc needing the serial number...never tried it outside of school/work.

im pretty sure in order to dual boot, you have to par!@#$%^&*ion your hard drive. now im not sure if this works with Linux, since its a completely different file system.

best thing to do would be to get another hard drive and install it on there... but considering its a laptop, this is a no go...
