madhaha Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 One of the later Martin Luther King speeches that is not shown on TV because... Well you need to read it. http://www.africanamericans.com/MLKjrBeyondVietnam.htm Anyone got a video copy?
Guest Guest Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 ...and the relevence of this speech is?
Bacchus Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 I only "quick read" the speech but I must say that it's still very actual considering what's going on in Iraq and the current political quagmire.I think the Buddhist Leader wasn't far from the mark... This kind of positive revolution of values is our best defense against communism. [applause] War is not the answer. Communism will never be defeated by the use of atomic bombs or nuclear weapons. Let us not join those who shout war and' date=' through their misguided passions, urge the United States to relinquish its participation in the United Nations. These are days which demand wise restraint and calm reasonableness. We must not engage in a negative anticommunism, but rather in a positive thrust for democracy [applause'], realizing that our greatest defense against communism is to take offensive action in behalf of justice. We must with positive action seek to remove those conditions of poverty, insecurity, and injustice, which are the fertile soil in which the seed of communism grows and develops. These are revolutionary times. All over the globe men are revolting against old systems of exploitation and oppression, and out of the wounds of a frail world, new systems of justice and equality are being born. The shirtless and barefoot people of the land are rising up as never before. The people whosat in darkness have seen a great light. We in the West must support these revolutions. Although the constant inference about religion is a triffle annoying, i think it's only peripheral. and even if MLK adress to communism is obsolete, his ideas about "revolution" and mankind political/social stance about it are still up to date though idealistic. But that is idealism is the stuff MLK and others like him are made of.
madhaha Posted November 23, 2003 Author Report Posted November 23, 2003 Remember he WAS preaching to a church and he was strongly religious.
Bacchus Posted November 23, 2003 Report Posted November 23, 2003 Yea i know, i tried to have his context in mind while reading through the speech hence the :" it's only peripheral" very good speech nonetheless
