Another computer is my house is running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Today, it was working fine. The electric went out earlier, but it's on a battery backup surge protector, so it stays on until you the battery runs out, or you turn it off. I went in and turned it off.. yes, the right way. When it was turned back on later, NONE of the services were on, all were stopped. I went to the device manager originally because it just seemed the network device wasn't on, but the Device Manager was totally empty. I went to services and enabled the plug and play device, now the device manager lists all my hardware. It says everything is in fine and working order, but it's not. The process svchost.exe is not even running, so how is the computer working? Is there one service I can enable that will fix everything? There are SO many and it's a huge pain to go down through and manually start them all. I tried creating another user account on the computer, but it encounters the same problem. Over an hour of searching Google, I've tried EVERYTHING and nothing has worked. I'm sure this problem is in no way related to hardware issues, or the electric issue that happened earlier. Half of the stuff I try to do tells me that a service must be enabled, but it doesn't say which one. It doesn't list any of the windows updates in the list of updates, but it should. Basically, NOTHING works except for windows explorer applications. I tried going into the Event Log to see what the !@#$%^&* might have happened, but it tells me the Event Log Service is not started. Google told me that it may be missing eventlog.dll from the system32 folder. I went there and it's not there. I also checked the list of recently installed programs, but nothing has been installed since February 5th. I can't restore the computer to yesterday, it says a service needs to be started. Well, I started it, but now it says that there are no restore points. I'm 100% sure this is not related to a virus or malware of any kind.

I do not want to reformat, so please, don't suggest that.

I'm totally baffled, please help.

Hm, fixed.

Vista CD said it would attempt to restore to a point, if any were available.. but I got to thinking, Windows told me there weren't any. Well, I let it run and it said to reboot and if it were successful, Windows would start. It started up and everything seems fine. I don't know when it restored to, it didn't even list a date, lol.

So, yeah, you can lock this.
