What is the new public map?

The new gameplay has multiple objectives... however, all the objectives can be !@#$%^&*ociated to one main goal: Controlling the arena, in particular the central base.

Depending on the number of people playing, the bot will use different settings. Settings include:

  • Target (Number of points needed to win)
  • Green points (Number of points given per green collected)
  • Kill points (Number of points given per kill, multiplied by the bounty of the killed player)
  • Flag points (X pts per flag every Y seconds)
  • Ball points (X pts for ball possession every Y seconds)

Some bonus points can be given for killing sprees.

The ball also gives weapon upgrades... Maybe we'll make it only give upgrades, or only give points... We'll see.

Most greens spawn inside the central base... so controlling the base is controlling the greens. "He who controls spice, controls the universe"

An example of a game score settings could be:

5 points per green

[1x bty] points per kill

1 point per flag per 2 seconds

1 point every second for holding the ball

First team to 1000 points wins.

So basically, if you hold the base, you'll get points for the greens scattered in there, for killing people trying to get in, and for the flags inside it.

So it really is a Control Point type game.

----------------

That's pretty much what I have so far... it's far from done though.

We had a couple of good pub games going today... had a 5v5 game, and a couple of 4v4's and such. This allowed me to test what was done of the bot plugin and improve it a lot already. The feedback was surprisingly good, people were having a lot of fun... could be due to the fact the zone was down for a while and they just missed playing it blum.gif But still... and the point settings were not even half-done yet.

What can we expect from the pub map in the future?

Also, you probably noticed the rumble map in pub... it's there for a reason

Eventually, it will be possible for players to switch to rumble without changing arena!

Most of the code to consider someone in an event or in pub is done already; I just need to code the events themselves now.

What this means is, someone in a rumble game will not see pub's scoreboard; someone in pub will not get specced after 10 deaths; etc.

Some limitations of this:

  • People in events will be free to change ship or freqs in the middle of an event... The bot will have to catch this and warn them/kick them of the event.
  • The score of people in events will need to be displayed differently. I don't want to scorereset everyone playing a rumble in pub. The W-L will have to be displayed with lvz's at the top-left of the player's screen.

Some features in mind

  • Winning pub games or events could get you "tokens". Similar to the credits system in some zones, tokens would allow you to win/gamble items to put in your inventory. Inventory would consist of... think about Super Mario Bros. 3; how you had items you could use before starting a level... That kind of inventory. There could be tokens hidden in some greens too (like multiprize)

If I forgot anything, or if anything changes in the plan, I'll try to keep the first post updated.

This is a good way to properly include all those

gameplay elements that used to seem so random

and out of place. Multi-objective pub has been

something that characterized 17th for a long time,

hopefully it'll be successful now that it's done properly.

Good job and keep it up.

I jumped on, I didn't see the point in having a ball without goals.

I guess the same old: shoot, throw ball to enemy for shooting delay, finish him off

I didn't find the center anything short of simple, but I guess if it works.

I just miss playing soccer with 30 active people, it is really sad. :(

I still say you should put some AI bots in there, atleast for someone to play with.

We've had more people playing in just one day than Delic has had playing in a span of liek 4-5 months

While I was in charge, we had over 100 different players

playing, with the public population alone peaking at 19

out of 23 playing at the same time. This is excluding

all the other people we had playing events, mostly Sockey.

If there's still a website for statistics from that period then

you can verify this. I don't know if you can verify the number

of "unique" players online, I wish I knew how Nurples did it.

I'm not going to deny that I failed to bring 17th back

on its feet, which was the whole purpose of me being

SysOp, but, and without making invalid excuses, this

was due to many things, including lack of "resources".

And I definitely wouldn't say that it was all a failure, and

I'm sure that those who enjoyed playing would agree.

I just failed to establish a stable, core population.

If your statement is true then that's just something for

me to rejoice about because all I ever wanted was for

17th to thrive. My way didn't work, hopefully this other

way will, which is what we should focus on right now.

When we had our peak, only 2 players were from DSB,

but I don't see why it matters what zone they came from

as long as they enjoyed playing in 17th.

Short period of time? Sockey was hosted every single day,

sometimes for hours. It obviously wasn't the ideal situation,

but it was certainly better than not having anyone play at all.

I don't recall "bragging" about anything really. I did

share my "plan" with people though, and I suppose it

would be interpreted as "bragging" by a person like you.

If I didn't have to move then I'd still been working

on trying to improve 17th and bringing it back.

Before I was appointed Head SysOp, I told everyone what

I was going to strive for, and in the end I did manage to

spark a little life into 17th. Not alone of course, but hey,

we didn't exactly have all the specialists lined up on our

Dev Team, which is something that I was constantly looking

for: reliable people who were willing to work thoroughly with

me. And if there weren't then I didn't want to bother because

I know that the results would've been disappointing.

All or nothing!

X`terr, you're not exactly qualified to criticize me, so if you

wouldn't mind taking your negative at!@#$%^&*ude elsewhere, I'd

really appreciate it! Thanks! Kiss.

!@#$%^&* lol.. I keep getting kicked off my own zone ;)

Keep getting no data... and sometimes I get disconnected and can't connect for a few minutes.

Gives you an idea how much hosting the bots myself sucks lol

I added soccer goals, and scoring goals is now part of the score as well... Since the ball spawns in center, controlling the middle base gives you an advantage on scoring too.

Basically, in the old pub, it was easy to get the ball, but you had to go through enemy defenses to score it.

Now, you have to get through the enemy to get the ball, but scoring it should be pretty easy.

I also spread out a bit the outside flags... and there are only 4 of them. There were 8 flags outside the base before, so it didn't make sense cause you'd get more points for controlling the outside than the inside.

Also, the bot tells the player the score, and the points system when entering arena. I had comments about people not knowing what to do...

I just checked the map out.. No bases? ;/

I'll refrain from commenting any further since

I can't test the pub properly at the moment.

ice: SubSpace 2 was already made.. it was released

on 04/03 -2003 I think. That thing was awesome!

xterr dont you ever get tired of trolling?

I dont need to check my previous posts,

just check your post here and start realizing

you got some issues. Fkin trolls, can't stand 'em.

It seems I'm having some problems with pub chat,

it's not the same problem we had in Control right?

Remember those flag settings that made it so

some pub messages didn't go through?

Just checking, and it's not my lag 'cause I got

relatively low lag and no ploss for once ;P
