According to a new report citing anonymous insider sources, Toshiba is quietly preparing to pull the plug on HD DVD.

HD DVD Toshiba

HD DVD is just mostly dead

First, time Warner pulled the rug out from under Toshiba by dropping support for HD DVD to exclusively support Sony's Blu-Ray high definition DVD format. Then Netflix and retail big box chain Best Buy pledged their support to Blu-Ray as well, with plans in place to phase out HD DVD completely later this year. Today, Wal-Mart joined the fray and announced it was going Blu, too.

It was an undeniably tough start to 2008 for the war torn HD DVD, and today it would appear the damage is irreversible: one of the sole remaining backers of the format, Toshiba, is allegedly putting together a plan to kill off the format sometime this year.

This according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter (via ars technica), which quotes "reliable industry sources" as saying that Toshiba will euthanize HD DVD in the coming months.

To date, Toshiba has attempted to boost sales of HD DVD by drastically cutting prices on DVD players -- the lowest price today is $119 -- but the move thus far has had little effect. Microsoft, which sells an add-on HD DVD player for its Xbox 360 game console, cut the peripheral's price to $129 in January.

Officially, Toshiba is taking a wait-and-see at!@#$%^&*ude in regards to HD DVD. "Given the market developments in the past month, Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players," Jodi Sally, VP of marketing for Toshiba America Consumer Products, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Unofficially, the format tea leaves show HD DVD is all but dead.

Next stop on the format war tour? Replacing your existing standalone Blu-Ray player when it won't play Blu-Ray 2.0 discs. Luckily for gamers, the PS3 is immune to this issue.

You've got some nerve, Rootbear, some nerve. Always contradicting yourself, claiming that you're just an innocent civilian being brutalized by the hordes of Continuumverse.

Anyways, the PS3 is going to have a lot of good games coming out soon, not to mention the already-released (and excellent) thousands of ps2/ps1 games, and an online system that pwns the !@#$%^&* out of X-box live (it's free, too.)

Pretty sure only the 60gb ps3 is backwards compatible... I'm a 360 owner myself. Not that I'm against PS3, I've always been a big sony fan, probably would have bought the ps3 earlier if it hadn't been so expensive to start out. But there aren't that many great PS3 games out that aren't out on 360 too... COD4, Gears of War, Lost Planet, !@#$%^&*!@#$%^&*in's Creed, GTA 4 (+GTA series), Halo Series, Rainbow Six Vegas, Turok (decent), Bioshock, M!@#$%^&* Effect, The Orange Box, Alan Awake, Army of Two, Elder Scrolls, etc... I will say PS3 is a pretty !@#$%^&* good system though.. waiting for price to drop maybe another $50.00, doubt anytime soon but who knows. The Blu-Ray feature and free online play are definitely gonna win over some hardcore Xbox fans I'd bet.

well, i agree with the fact that xbox live owns the !@#$%^&* out of the ps3 online system, purely because it's more interactive and has alot more features than the ps3 does... at the moment.

when "home" is released for the ps3 (i think in april or may? not sure), i think it will take over the online system of the xbox. you could say home is just copying the xbox360, but it's just a step forward into competing with live. home will feature making your own apartment and being able to go into other peoples areas (kind of like the sims), and be completely customizable. arcade games will be avaliable to play with other people. you can meet and talk to each other whilst in home via bluetooth headset/virtual keyboard/usb keyboard, listen to music and exchange content. and being that the ps3 network now is free and so will "home", while xbox live isn't (i know it's not that much money, but it's still not free), people might just start to prefer the ps3 network instead.

to comment on the games that the ps3 has: there isn't a wide range of the best !@#$%^&*les avaliable on the ps3, because of the fact that it's harder and more of a longer task coding the game on the ps3 than it is on xbox360. but now with the !@#$%^&*les scheduled for release on the ps3 (notably MGS4, GT5, Resistance 2, Wardevil and GTA), the ps3 is looking like a promising media system and i'm confident that we'll see news that the sales of the ps3 will go up and probably passing the xbox360 sales. (and yes, i understand the fact the xbox has been around much longer than the ps3 so of course the ps3 would have to overtake it at some point) also, the gig of the harddrive in the ps3 is irrelevant to sales - you could just stick a 500 gig in the system or just use it as an external.

fact is, the xbox360 has been around a !@#$%^&* sight longer than the ps3 has - and that has obviously been a HUGE advantage for microsoft to take control of the console market and sell so much more consoles than sony. i think that sony shot themselves in the foot by not releasing the console on time and by buggering around with blu-ray devices :/ they've had more time for developers to get used to coding and rendering the games for the xbox360, whilst the ps3 uses a more complicated structure so it's another setback but perhaps for the better? more time to work on the games, more time to iron out bugs/glitches?

blu-ray is also another big factor in their sales and popularity, seeing as how the HD-DVD market is nearly dead (and how microsoft supported HD-DVD...), the ps3 offers basically a home entertainment system for one single price, cheaper than just a blu-ray player by itself - while the xbox360 instead offer an add-on for HD-DVD for a price. so basically, bringing all the above into account, surely the ps3 will make its mark and opinions of biased fanboys of the xbox360 community will change?

The fact of the matter is that we need HD-DVD around to make sure Blu-Ray was doing its best. With no compe!@#$%^&*ion means that it will slack in development and not try to be the best, since they are the only ones. Just like when Madden took the license of the NFL. Nothing really changed in the following versions.

Variety brings compe!@#$%^&*ion which is what the consumers need.

Socom for the Playstation had a bad!@#$%^&* online system that even X-box live fans wish they had.

Anyways, I borrowed my neighbor's X-box awhile ago (modded, over 100s of games) and found nothing interesting at all. Even Halo bores me nowadays.

Both. The !@#$%^&* kind've question is that? Halo is boring and nothing new, just a rip off of any other FPS. Introduced nothing new to the genre at all, oh wow cool story line, I prefer Marathon for the MAC's storyline.

Its about time, I have alwaye been reluctant to buy an HD system because the last thing i wanted was for it to be pulled shortly after getting it set up then having to go buy the system that is still being supported.

Its not good for anyone to have a system that could be pulled any moment.

I guess the 360 could just make a Blu-Ray addon instead.

The point about the Xbox 360 being around longer than the PS3 has it's advantages yes, but it also has it's disadvantages. For example the PS3 has newer technology.
