tcsoccerman Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 hey, i'm trying to get ubuntu installed on my computer but i'm having some trouble. first i tried wubi, but it never works. it installs but when i reboot it gives me this very odd installation. then itried burning an image (.iso) to a cd. then i reinserted the cd and nothing happens. i also tried booting with the cd and nothing happens. i don't know what i'm doing wrong, any help? yes i am a newb to linux. Steigerwald Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) burn it as an image using nero, than depending on which make you need to edit your boot up options. set it so that the cd rom is before the hard drive. and i feel the ubuntu community forum would be a better place to ask that question. that community is really helpful. You don't want any linux distro even close to your computer! burning the image to the cd itself will not allow startup... you have to set an option to make the cd "bootable" that's only if you compile a cd, not if you just burn an image

★ Purge Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 or grab a virtual emulator like VMWare player and run ubuntu on that (runs on top of Windows).
sil Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I would really recommend using VMWare like Purge said. It will allow you to play around with linux and maybe understand it a bit more before you go and install it on a machine.

sil Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 (edited) VMWare will let you run and test at many linux distributions. I don't remember which one of their products you need exactly. I was reading VMWare Player which it does not sound like it lets you do very much. I believe VMWare Server is the one you are looking for: VMware Server can create, edit, and play virtual machines. ★ Purge Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 it's like having an OS within your existing OS (so you don't have to install it separately). it will run on top of Windows as another program but will have a majority of the components that the other OS has. it's recommended if you just want to play around with the OS (linux, in your case) before actually committing to it.

tcsoccerman Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 i've gotten it to load somewhat. i got to the ubuntu graphic loader (the orange bar going back and forth). than i've gotten to where it starts and loads things then on the far right it will have a bunch of [OK] things. then it gives me this image:(attachment). the mouse works at the grey image screen. reselution problems?ubuntu_image.zip I love lamp
