Inimitable Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 When I go to enter a few zones (hyperspace, halo, fusion) the client enters and begins to download. When I reach a certain point in the download it exits and says "Unable to create zones\SSCE Hyperspace\commands.hlp". I would really appreciate some help with this.
rootbear75 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 (edited) windows permissions are preventing you from downloading to your Program Files folder (or wherever it is located)You must be an "administrator" user in order for Windows to allow you to write into the Prgm Files folder. If you are not the owner of the computer, have the owner of the computer make your account an admin, or tell him to do this: Log onto Owner/Admin userNavigate to the Continuum folderRight-Click on the Continuum FolderClick PropertiesClick the Security tabClick Edit, or w/e the edit button would be in XP. (this is a vista window)then click Add, then type the USER name of your account. Then highlight your username in the window, and click the checkbox that is next to FULL CONTROL under the ALLOW columnthen click OK, then click OK again. now you should be fine this will allow you to do anything you need to in the Continuum folder Edited January 23, 2008 by rootbear75
Inimitable Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 I don't think that is the problem because 1. I am the administator, it's my personal computer. 2. I am able to download content from other zones.
Shock Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 I was talking to a guy with this exact same problem last night and I couldn't figure it out. The last thing I said to try was to reinstall but I didn't stick around long enough to hear the outcome. Are you using Vista?
Incomplete Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 What version of continuum are you using?
Inimitable Posted January 23, 2008 Author Report Posted January 23, 2008 Well when I first installed the new continuum client I couldn't get into SSCE Hockey Zone and then I reinstalled and then I was able to get in there.Im using the new .40.
rootbear75 Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 Yeah i'm using Vistaits still vista preventing you from doing it. stupid UACtry what i said above, and see what happens
Shock Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Meh.. I never had any trouble with UAC when I had Vista. Except for the minor fact that it's really annoying.
Knight Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 (edited) For some clerification on this. Windows vista has done away with the .hlp file in it's entirity, it uses a new more dynamic format. Unfortunately this is causing problems with programs that opted to use theb uilt in help system. Since Vista's release MANY programs have been doing away with .hlps for conformities sake. However, do to the fact the most active developement being done on the client right now is watching people try and reverse engineer it... Well... I don't see an official fix from priit or his ilk. I would like to know if anyone has found any other way around this. I've heard that it's well within the possibility of installing the .txt then converting it to a .hlp file. But I havn't actually gotten around to testing out anyones theories. I had heard a HyperSpace Smod had figured out a way to fix it. But I've yet to hear how. So goodluck to you all. Edit:Just realised something, zones that put their .hlp files into .lvz are not experiencing the same problems. I'veswitched all the .hlp files I could find over to .lvz files and havn't found a person with a problem as of yetPerhaps the SSC Zone owners wouldn't mind switching over to .lvz genericly to help vista users? Edited January 24, 2008 by Knight
Shock Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Interesting. It only seems to be a problem with ASSS zones. Care to explain why? I don't know much about it. Or you could have someone generous just upload the .hlp to the zone's website each time it gets updated. Kind of a pain in the !@#$%^&*, but it works.
Hakaku Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 Yeah i'm using VistaTry right clicking, "run as administrator"
rootbear75 Posted January 25, 2008 Report Posted January 25, 2008 Yeah i'm using VistaTry right clicking, "run as administrator"my solution sets it so you dont have to do that

I don't get it...You can include a .hlp file WITHOUT a lvz???
»Purge Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 you can include anything without a lvz (except for special event graphics like AfterKill or whatever). instead of having zone owners re-lav everything including the .hlp files, perhaps they can just make it an optional download so users can choose whether to download them... but that means no F1.
Kilo Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 It has nothing to do with the .hlp file, certain HZ users have gotten it from LVZs too. The solution in every case so far seems to be to delete the file in your zones\Zonehere folder, if it already exists, it fails for some reason, for certain users. Of course if the file doesn't exist already, try deleting the entire folder, and if that doesn't work, then uh.. good luck.
»Purge Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 delete which file? the commands.hlp? but the zone's directory will not exist in the zones\ directory since it cannot be made. and deleteting/renaming the commands.hlp in the root folder won't do anything.
Drake7707 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 don't put continuum on your c: drive, put it on your d: par!@#$%^&*ion (vista protects the drive where windows is installed on, even when run on admin). While this is generally a good thing, legit applications also get access denied errors when they are calling the file API of windows (i've had it with my programs in vb in vista). I always seperate my C: windows and D: my program files/games E: remainder eps, etc, so when i reinstall i only have to format my C:, and i still have all my data
Hakaku Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Continuum works perfectly fine on Drive C:\, if you're having write problems, it's because you don't have administrator rights. And even if you do or don't, it's still affected by Vista's UAC (Read here), which is a system built to protect your computer from harm, even from yourself. As for the rest, I highly doubt that it has anything to do with commands.hlp itself ; I can't seem to be able to recreate the problem myself, so it's possible it's related to the UAC, similarly how .log files won't work for everyone. I'd rather know if Inimitable can enter any zones at all? And if he's running any firewalls at all (other than Vista's)?

And even if you do or don't, it's still affected by Vista's UAC (Read here), which is a system built to protect your computer from harm, even from yourself.Which is WHY i keep saying to CHANGE YOUR PERMISSIONS.The UAC by default includes you in the Users category when dealing with the C: drive even if you have an administrator accountif you add yourself seperately, you are not bound by the User group permissions.
»Purge Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I've replicated this problem and I cannot connect to Hyperspace (says it cannot make commands.hlp). so far this is the only zone that won't work for me.
Knight Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 Do you already have the files for other zones? I havn't expressely tested anything other then HS and MG, seeing as I only play one, and only tried to enter the other one 4-5 times since I got vista... Subchat > You.
»Purge Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 nope, nothing for that zone. not even the directory.
