If you want 17th to be popular again, why not make it like the way it was when it was popular, two bases with a soccer game. Except I would integrate some ideas from other zones and be able to purchase stuff more easily.

That was tried, it was successful for all of 2 or 3 days then it went dead again. It's not easy to repopulate a zone on a dying game. We're all growing up.....well most of us anyway.

Ahh I miss the old days. Get home to play continuum at about 6pm, look at the clock and find that it's 4am. Rumbles, Duels, Sbls, Javwars, JWLs. pernille, Rifleman, Nurples.

All the old players like meks + ophe, bran + rish. Komi in his rumbles. Oreo tanking it up. I miss the leagues we used to have too. Oh well.

I keep noticing random groups of like 3-5 people suddenly entering the zone altogether at once and playing.. I can't tell if they're bots or not; some of them communicate and then the others just completely ignore me and don't even type at all.

I thought most people did that anyway? =P

So basically what you are saying is that the entire game is made up of dead beat old timers that refuse to let things go, and they are so addicted like sheep that they want other people to join in thier addiction, but they simply won't. Furthermore, the game will eventually die altogether at about the same as we who are now playing it die off.

There is no hope, find a new game, is that what you are suggesting?

What happened to hopeless college students that have too much time on thier hands?

I refuse to give up.

I will be playing 2D space fighter into my mega_shok.gif's please join me.

It was soo much fun the old days. I miss the spec chat the most. 50 players in pub, 30 chatting in spec (-;

It would help if you guys actually played once in a while. I've gone into pub countless times when there is 3 pop, waited for a few minutes but no one comes.

In my opinion, right now 17th too complicated, I'd recommend removing the base in the center of the map in order to dumb things down. We should keep the left right bases for the ball game, and until a significant amount of people start playing again (to give feedback) we shouldn't test out new features. Lastly, I think that the ship sets should be set back to the old ones, if they aren't already (old terrier please). There is a learning curve for these settings but I think that this isn't the problem, since a lot of people still play dsb (me included).

From my experience, although I uninstalled continuum recently, other zones I have played at like hyperspace and dsb were interesting because of the competitiveness. In dsb, all I like(d) doing is praccing, and in hyperspace I was addicted to flagging. In 17th I was attracted by the ship sets (the mini weasel was awesome and should definitely be brought back), rumble was huge and the ball game was ok. I never thought anything was wrong with 17th, in fact I don't even know why it died.

One thing that would help if you guys actually played once in a while. I've gone into pub countless times when there is 3 pop, waited for a few minutes but no one comes.

So the jist of my message is to revert back to the old ship settings, simplify the center area of the map, and we might get some people to play. The underlying problem is that continuum, not 17th, is dieing with all the other new games coming out, even if it still kicks ass fun-wise.

17th mostly died imo because of too sudden changes and on top of that non-motivated ones.

Of course there are always those players who like to see something new so Zeke completely renewed the unique shipsets of the zone which attracted new players but at the same time upset the old player base of the zone.

We've always over the time heard voices calling for a new map and/or game style of this zone.

The most drastic change of this can still be seen in a zone now called SSC The Complex. The idea behind this game/map/zone is great! The decision to make this the public map of 17th was the most drastic one. Which again shook the very the player base, attracted new players and made old player base leave.

The Complex even fit the war based theme of 17th better than no other map did ever before and had it received more support from the staff at its time (Matrix and Mav pretty much were on their own) it could have been successful.

We've since then seen rollbacks of maps and settings. Nothing refreshing, nothing ground breaking just a half arsed changes to attract new players to the zone.

But a zone doesn't populate itself. You need to put in far more work and effort than only change the map to make it successful.

You can't populate a zone by hosting events that have nothing to do with the zone itself as soon as 4 players have entered. The basic idea and foundation of the zone has to be the fun to play public arena.

This is what 17th could provide in the past and what 17th lacks nowadays.

The current public map of 17th is designed for a player base of 20+ players. The center of the map does not fit a low population zone and is player unfriendly with nearly no players playing the game. You can't just blow yourself up if you spawn half way across the map. Soccer games with 2 or 4 players is no fun at all. There's no tactic you and/or your team could follow in a map of this proportions... The center of the map is inaccessible, all fine for 20+ but not fit for lower pops.

Where's the fun in turf style flag game when one is tapping and the other one immediately retapping...

I've known and played 17th for a long time. I've staffed and developed events maps and zones. To sum things up and come to a closure:

17th is missing a clean design philosophy and that is why this zone is and will remain dead.

That looks awesome!

I remember how frustrating it was to jump around trying to find people.. at least I knew where to look, but new comers probably just saw a dead pub and left.

This is a really good Idea.

And to think, Complex only exists because I got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas back in 96 :p

For those of you who played Perfect Dark, the original scheme was to design the "King of the Hill" game mode, and Explody Thingy and I got that module reasonably close to completion. Then my memory fades out to where there was the Complex (which is named for the Goldeneye/PD map btw) map with capture points, and Rifleman was almost done with THAT plugin...but then World of Warcraft took his soul.

So I quit staff thinking it would never get done...and then Mav was somehow motivated to finish it.

And it was the most fun I've ever had in SS. Unfortunately the gameplay was eventually corrupted to hell, but that's another story.

That is all.

Maybe we could just have the same map but shrink it in half in the center... then when/if more ppl start playing u could adjust the size slow bigger to fit more ppl.... just a thoooought

We did a lot of experiments with shrinking the center and stuff like that... Never really worked well. If you want to try yourself, get DCME and try stuff

Actually, that was the first thing I tried to do when I got sysop
