Why not hep discretion (if the project is a new client, as it seems to be)? Splitting up effort isn't going to help as much get accomplished.1. To create a new game inspired by subspace/continuum, but one that brings the genre forward in interesting and innovative ways, while keeping true to its original roots.2. The main developers are on the sf.net website3. Because Discretion is a replacement/clone of Continuum. This project is about creating a completely new game, not just a new client. Its meant to be a sequel rather than a replacement/clone Rediscover online gaming. Get Subspace.Owner of the PlaySubSpace Network (level 0 BanG) and PSSF server
★ Bak Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 how is this game going to be different than Discretion !@#$%^&*uming both get finished? SubSpace Discretion: A Third Generation SubSpace Client
★ doc flabby Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 (edited) how is this game going to be different than Discretion !@#$%^&*uming both get finished? The most obvious change is this game will have a 3D engine. Its going to use 3D maps and 3D Ship models. Discretion is 2D, tile based (like Continuum).Ones locked into C# the other isn't.And discretion is locked into C++ Programming languages don't matter that much, you can port things to different languages fairly easily. although the process is time consuming. ★ doc flabby Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 (edited) If developing this project is seen as a "problem" for this forum please let me know sooner rather than later, I am quite happy to move it to a different place, if it is not wanted here. My reason for asking for a sub-forum here originally (rather than setting my own up) was because so many people got involved the the thread i started and there seems to be alot of interest and support. But perhaps i am just jittery.  This project is in no way splitting development the way I see it. Its a competing project to Discretion to some extent I agree, but the developers are much different. My project has developers who specialise in Java/C# working on it. There is no way for them to easily help Discretion (a C++ project) with their skills. Perhaps you understand my choice of language better now, there are more Java/c# programmers than c++ programmers. I think both projects could be successful. The compe!@#$%^&*ion between the two can only been good. If you decide you do not think this project has the merit to remain here, please let me know so I can take a backup of the numerous posts that have been made, and relocate them to a different place. ★ freakmonger Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 While I do not speak for Polix, and I am not speaking for SSForum / SSCentral on this topic right now, I do have some concerns. I think the main concern is developers losing interest, the project coming to a halt and the players that had their hopes set so high waiting on this 'game' just get disappointed *again*.  We've all been in this community for a while now and we've all seen this time and time again. Somebody comes along, promises "subspace 2" or "3d subspace" and has a pretty nice project going. Then all of a sudden something happens...What happens? Real life is what happens. Things like this take a lot of time, and the more time that passes the more chances of 'real life' catching up to the developers.  So I *think* Polix was getting at why have 2 different projects going at the same time and run the risk of both projects losing developers. But obviously you have stated your reasons, and they are very valid reasons  I do hope this project continues as well as discretion. I just hope interest is not lost with the 2 projects. Now as for this project being 'supported' by SSCentral / SSForum, I can't answer that question as the admins/owners have not had the time to discuss the subject but I'm sure Polix will make a statement. I personally see no problem with it, being it would help the subspace community out as a whole, but whatever decision the SSCentral / SSForum Admins & Owners come to, I will fully support. But best of luck
★ D1st0rt Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 For the record, saying the project is "locked into C#" is incorrect. It would be more accurate to say the project is locked into using the Common Language Runtime. There are a mul!@#$%^&*ude of languages contributions can be written in, some of them including:C#, Boo, J#, C++, Java, Python, PHP, Ruby (and probably more that I'm not aware of, the gimp# project is a good demonstration of this) _UU___UU__SSSSS____AAA____UU___UU__SSSSS____AAA____UU___UU_SS_______AAAAA___UU___UU_SS_______AAAAA___UU___UU__SSSSS__AA___AA__UU___UU__SSSSS__AA___AA__UU___UU______SS_AAAAAAA__UU___UU______SS_AAAAAAA___UUUUU___SSSSS_AA____AA___UUUUU___SSSSS_AA____AAJ.C. Smong Posted December 30, 2007 Report Posted December 30, 2007 Yeah I should have said that. Anyway, what flabby says is also true, if you want to use C++ go help discretion, if you know C# help on this instead.
Trained Posted January 2, 2008 Report Posted January 2, 2008 I think the main concern is developers losing interest, the project coming to a halt and the players that had their hopes set so high waiting on this 'game' just get disappointed *again*. I know how that feels. CLE had my hopes up, but ZigNotZag vanished in outer space. Oh well, DCME made me feel better and saved the day . Anyways, good luck to both projects. -TrainedWe’ve created the greatest collection of shared knowledge in history. Help protect Wikipedia.
