Shock Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Ok, this is an update from my previous topic about my router problem. Read about it HERE. Ok, now... If I enable wireless, the entire network lags, whether anyone connects to it or not. I've checked to see if maybe my neighbors were stealing it or something.. and no one is. So, I decided to borrow a router from my buddy just to see if I encounter the same problem and sure enough, I do. Am I blind or is this an obvious interference problem? The only 2.4GHz machine in my house, other than my router, is my cordless phone. However, it's not even plugged in or being used.. It's just sitting about a foot away from the router. If this is an obvious interference problem, what kinds of things can cause interference? The only other thing I can think of is maybe a short in the plug. I thought (maybe) that the outlet may have problems, therefore not sending enough power to the router? That's just a theory, call me an idiot. Someone please help! I'm desperate!
rootbear75 Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 (edited) try the things you mentionedmove the phone away from the routerand also change the plug you plugged it into, or plug it into a surge protector does your ISP allow Wireless networks on its line? I have heard some things that if it detects a wireless device, it will block your connections Edited December 1, 2007 by rootbear75
Shock Posted December 1, 2007 Author Report Posted December 1, 2007 Pretty sure, it's the same ISP I used about 6 months ago. I'll try some of that !@#$%^&*, though. Can't do it right now, people are asleep in the room. I'll update tomorrow.
rootbear75 Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 just because its the same ISP you used 6 months ago doesnt mean anythingthey could have changed they policies and not notified you (which seems to be common of ISPs these days)
Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 I just used their live chat and asked them if they blocked any wireless connections and such and they said no.
rootbear75 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 I just used their live chat and asked them if they blocked any wireless connections and such and they said no.did you ask them anything else? like how to fix it?
Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 Yeah, they didn't know.. They basically told me the same !@#$%^&* I've tried 50 times.
rootbear75 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 curious... could there be interference from anything else?like high powered items near or around the router (or even in the wall behind it)that or unshielded wires...
Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 I'm completely !@#$%^&*ing baffled, tbh. I don't have the slightest idea what could be happening and it's really starting to irritate me.
rootbear75 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 one last thing to try:move the router to another room and run a cable if you have to...
Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 I can't. My cable running from outside isn't long enough and I can't move the modem/router into another room because it won't work on the second hop of the cable.

Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 Oh, I can actually try that.. but I would have to rewire my entire network.. I don't have a spare long !@#$%^&* ethernet cord lying around.
rootbear75 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 (edited) just try it with your wireless only.. dont string any cables you dont have toand its always nice to have an extra long cable for special situations that or try a repeater (doubt it will work, but its a long shot) btw: if either of my solutions work, then it HAS to be interference and if you do move it into a hallway, try to mount it on the wall under a table or in a cabinet so its unobtrusiveand make sure you get long enough cables so you dont see them along the wall (maybe get cables that match the paint or paint them yourself ) Edited December 2, 2007 by rootbear75
Shock Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 PFFT! I'm gonna go all out tomorrow.. trying all kinds of !@#$%^&*. Probably gonna end up with a headache when it's all over with, but meh.

»LtNirvana Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 This is interesting, if a different router didn't work, than something in the area is definitly !@#$%^&*ing with your wireless signal big time, this isnt small microwave or cellular interference or whatever. Someone in your neighborhood could be a complete !@#$%^&* and be running something like air magnet, a utility that enables your to hiijack/completely !@#$%^&*/take over/etc wireless connectivity no matter how secure it is. Do you live next to a nuclear reactor? lol. Describe the area around your house. Any huge electical equipment in the area? generators? transformers? In your house is there anything like this? It cant be as simple as something like lead or signal blocking, whatever is interfering is clearly doing alot more than distorting your signal, its !@#$%^&*!@#$%^&*ing it. Try moving it to another area in the house ya. If that doesn't work you have to do a survey of your surrounding area, anywhere within 300 yards of your house essentially. Look for big !@#$%^&* electronics etc. Also ask your neighbors if any of them are ASSS, lol.
