Continuum hangs for a few minutes when entering a zone

My client hangs for 1-2 minutes (100% cpu) when I enter a zone. Once I'm in the zone everything seems normal.

 

It does not do it in safe mode. It does so it under a different user account. I have no firewall, spyware, adware or antivirus software installed. It does it on totally different networks too.

 

Specs:

Vista Ultimate 32bit

PM 1.7 (oc'ed to 2.26)

2gb ram

Nvidia go 6800

It sounds a lot like Roobear's problem described in another thread.

 

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Continuum? (and make sure it's Continuum 0.40)

Do you have UAC turned on or off? And does Continuum have administrator permission to run?

 

If you ran Continuum under compatibility mode (right+click, properties, compatability, [select Windows XP]), does it still affect? - And while on the same tab, select "disable desktop composition".

 

You may have answered these before, but it's good to know for future reference. The only other thing I can think of, is for you to make sure Continuum is running in the same resolution as your desktop, and in 32Bit colors (find in Continuum's options). - Or you could also try selecting "software emulation" in your advanced options, and change Continuum's skin to something else in the menu.

sounds like it, but i never noticed a 100%cpu when i entered... (could be because i have 2 cpus...)

and my problem some how worked itself out...

 

and looking at the name of the poster, he actually posted in my thread, but no one replied to his problem

Yeah, and I posted there too but after his got resolved nobody replied to me.

 

UAC is turned off. I run as administrator. Compatibility mode + disabling desktop composition had no effect. I run continuum in windowed mode, running it full screen does the same thing. Setting it to 32bit (which is what my dekstop is), Software emulation and changing the skin doesn't help either

Tried reinstalling, fresh reboot doesn't solve anything.

It's not a crash so nothing is thrown into the event logs.

It should come up as "Application Hang" if you can make the error log thing pop up. Try closing it with the Applications tab on the Task Manager. It should bring up that box to send the error to Microsoft and it will make an event in the Event Viewer.

Nah, vista never comes up with the "this app has hung" box. Ending the process doesnt put anything in the event log either.

If Event Viewer doesn't catch any problems, and with all of the other info you mentioned, it's most likely because Continuum is being affected by either

1) a third-party program (firewall - administrator permissions - other program - torrents - virus - antivirus...)

2) your graphics card (Nvidia)

3) something is corrupted (maybe the install).

 

Question though, have you ever used a previous install of Continuum? If not, then you should revert to an older version (0.39pr1) and tell us if certain zones that still allow it work (e.g. SSCI Devastation, or SSCU Death Star Battle). I also recommend you manually delete Continuum's registry using Windows' Regedit (find it in start > search (type regedit) > find Continuum's files)

Not on this windows install, but I tried 39pr1 anyways and I still get the same issue after deleting the registry entries + all files. Install can't be corrupted since I've reinstalled continuum many times now. I'm not running any av / firewall apps and there's no issue with permissions since I'm running as admin.

its actually not that big of a problem, unless of course this "hang" lasts more than 30 seconds...

for me, i just sit there and wait.. usually it enters 5 - 10 seconds later

It literally takes a minute or two. Not that big of a deal most of the time, but when I need to restart the game while in a squad match it's pretty painful

ZOMG... i might have just figured out why this happens

SINCE you had the same problem as me, and since we BOTH have Vista

 

Try turning off the Aero feature.

I remember something popping up somewhere once before, and it said something that "Continuum doesnt support Aero" or something along those lines

Try that, and let me know what happens

 

To turn off windows aero, follow these steps:

 

Right Click on the Desktop

Select "Personalize"

Click "Window Color and Appearance"

Click "Open classic appearance properties for more color options"

Click SOMETHING OTHER THAN "Windows Aero"

 

If the problem is what i think it is, this SHOULD solve it.... but i'm not guaranteeing anything

I bought a brand new 256mb video card and had so many issues with Continuum. It drove me to the point where I didn't even use it for Continuum. As for other games, it worked fine. I'm not saying that this is your problem, but it's something to look into. Do you have any on-board video you can try?

do try this because most desktops that have AGP or PCIX (PCI Express) usually have integrated video for standard VGA gfx (at least mine did, but its about 4-5 years old now, so i dunno)

there is usually a rubber cover over the port and on mine at least, it said "Do Not Remove"
